Miller. 20th Century,Broadway,Chamber,Musical/Show,Pop,Wedding. 8 pages. Sterling Music Editions #708018. Published by Sterling Music Editions (A0.1104778). Meredith Willson worked on his Broadway musical The Music Man for nearly ten years before it was premiered in 1957. It became an instant hit, and the Beatles popularized Till there was You with their 1963 album Meet the Beatles! This version of the song is written to either feature each member of the brass quintet, or to be the accompaniment for a vocal singer with five brass. This arrangement works well for concerts, recitals, weddings or background music.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1221432 By Stan Kenton & His Orchestra. By L. Wolfe Gilbert, Marion Sunshine, and Moises Simons. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Jazz,Latin,Multicultural,Pop,World. 39 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #817754. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1221432). Can a brass quintet sound like Stan Kenton’s 19-piece big band? No, not really:  no saxophones, no rhythm section, no Milt Bernhart, no Maynard Ferguson, no Bill Russo, no Conte Candoli, no . . .  Well, you get the picture.  But five brass instruments can play in the Kenton style.  And that’s what this is:  “The Peanut Vendor†in the style of the Stan Kenton Orchestra.   Moisés Simons’ “El Manisero†(“The Peanut Vendorâ€) was first recorded in the late 1920s.  The melody was relatively simple yet exotic sounding; the lyrics, a Cuban street vendor’s pitch for selling his bags of peanuts.  Consumers bought more than a million copies of the sheet music, and the song supposedly led to a “rumba craze†in the U.S. and Europe (although the song is not really a rumba!).     Don Azpiazú and his Havana Casino Orchestra recorded the song for RCA Victor in 1930 with Antonio MachÃn on the vocal; its sales may well have been more than the million-plus sheet music copies sold.     English lyrics were added by L. Wolfe Gilbert and Marion Sunshine and the song became “The Peanut Vendor.† One estimate is that nearly 200 recordings have been made.  That’s a lot of peanuts.    Stan Kenton revived “The Peanut Vendor†in 1947 when he first recorded it for Capitol Records.  His version was completely instrumental.  Rhythm and saxophones opened the number and established the background; later the trombone section added emphasis.  A trombone solo first stated the melody but eventually the five-person trumpet section took over with what one writer referred to as “shrieking dissonances.† “The Peanut Vendor†subsequently became one of Kenton’s most requested numbers and he recorded it at least three more times.   This brass quintet arrangement, of course, has access to only two trumpets.  So the good news is that all five players get a chance with the melody.  Kenton’s extended opening trombone solo is shared by Trombone and Tuba.  The “shrieking dissonances†are performed not only by Trumpets but also by Horn in F and Trombone.  The bad news is that all five players have to take a turn with the continuing rhythmic background melody.  Written in 4/4 time, the suggested tempo is 184 BPM in a Latin style.  Kenton’s version is in B-flat major; this arrangement lowers it to A-flat major so that most notes are within the normal playing range of the instruments.  (Don’t worry; the “shrieking dissonances†are still there!)     Completed in 2023, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 37 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.).

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1460513 By John Denver. By Johnny Marks. Arranged by Will Corbin. Children,Christmas,Pop. 10 pages. Will Corbin #1039437. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1460513). The Rudolph story begins in 1939, when Montgomery Ward asked Robert May, one of its ad copywriters, to come up with a kids' book for its Christmas shoppers. The result was the now-familiar red-nosed reindeer. (For those born in later generations, Mongomery Ward was a giant, like Sears, in the mail-order retail business. Kind of like Amazon without the Internet.) May's brother-in-law, Johnny Marks, turned it into a song a decade later. Gene Autry recorded it for Christmas in 1949, and it immediately hit No. 1 on the pop music charts. It was still there at the end of the first week of January, making it the first No. 1 hit of the 1950s.Its sales since then, including countless covers, have surpassed 150 million. Only White Christmas, among holiday songs, has sold more.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1303802 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. 21st Century,Chamber,Children,Historic,Multicultural,World. 77 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #893335. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1303802).     A song learned in primary school years and years ago had words something along the lines of the following:         Oh! I’m a young musician,         From distant lands I come.         Singing and playing,         Ever I’m straying.    Also known as “I Am a Fine Musician,†“I Am a Gay Musician†and perhaps other titles, that song is still around and has evolved into many different versions. The original was probably a German folk song from the early 1800s. As published in an 1889 collection of children’s songs, it bears the title, “Ich bin ein Musikant.â€Â That translates as “I am a musician.â€Â In the lyrics the musician claims to be “from Schwabenland†(Swabia) and to play geige (violin: “Dide schum schum schumâ€), flöte (flute: “Päde wäpp päpp päppâ€) and basse (bass: “Dide schum schum schump, päde wäpp päpp päpp). Later versions list the instruments played by the musician as bassoon, bells, clarinet, drum, guitar, piano, piccolo, triangle, trombone, trumpet, tuba, tympani, viola and just about every instrument and noisemaker you can think of.     Anyway, that’s the tune on which “The Brass Player†was built. But here, the musician is concerned only with brass. Which brass? Well, possibly trumpet. Or maybe horn in F. Or trombone. Or tuba. Or perhaps all four; certainly, all are featured in this piece.    “The Brass Player†comprises four sections. The first is in the key of C major and is played at a moderate 2/4 tempo. After a brief Trumpet/Tuba ostinato, Trombone introduces the main theme. Other instruments join in and play around with a variation or two.     The second section is a sweet, nostalgic rendition in 4/4 carried mainly by Horn in F, with help from Trumpets and Trombone.     In section three, the mood changes radically. Time signature goes to 3/4; tempo speeds up to vivace and the key changes to B Minor. All five instruments participate, and some odd things take place rhythmically at I through K (measures 200 through 262), but Tuba seems to carry the melody most of the time.    Section four, in G Major, clips along at a fast 4/4 time. It returns to the main theme and (as in “Ich bin ein Musikant†and its multitudinous derivations) presents in call-and-response form. The first few measures are straight, but discord quickly creeps in. The melody begins to include smears, flutter tonguing and off-beat rhythmic figures. There is even a brief section in G Minor. Gradually, order and theme are restored and the piece ends in a glorious, upbeat statement.    This piece, completed in 2023, consists of 398 measures, a little over nine minutes in length. There are four changes of key and four changes of time signature. Trumpet 1’s highest note is A above its staff; Trombone’s is F above the staff. Trumpet 2 has a few G-below-its-staff notes.    The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the Sheet Music Plus or Sheet Music Direct search box.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Digital Download SKU: A0.1468129 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 19th Century,Chamber,Folk,Historic,Traditional. 49 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #1046440. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1468129). In 1856 Joseph P. Webster, a Wisconsin songwriter, met Henry D.L. Webster (no relation), formerly the minister of Zanesville, Ohio’s Universalist Church. Joseph was in the process of writing a song but needed lyrics to go with his melody. Henry obliged by writing a longish poem about the love of his life, Ella Blocksom. She had been his fiancée, but the engagement had been broken and, apparently, so had Henry’s heart. Joseph’s melody needed a name that would fit into a three-note phrase, so “Ella” was changed to “Lorena.” Chicago’s Higgins Brothers published the song in 1857, and it became widely popular. When the American Civil war broke out, “Lorena” was beloved by both Union and Confederate soldiers as they thought of the wives and girlfriends they had left behind. J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” is beautiful and plaintive. It is no wonder that this song has remained a sentimental favorite over the years and is still performed and recorded. In this composition, “Lorena: A Brass Quintet Setting,” the “Lorena” tune has been expanded and transformed to create additional melodies that enhance and complement the original. You’ll find it a pleasure to play and a real crowd pleaser for audiences. This composition is 201 measures in length. It begins in the key of E-flat, transitions to B-flat at section C (measure 51) and goes to F at section G (measure 141). Initial tempo marking is Adagio, increasing to Moderato at section C. There are a number of temporary tempo variations and fermata marks, and the last 9 measures are characterized by a gradual slowing. The introduction is 21 measures in length. It leads to the second section, which consists of a plain, simple and straightforward statement of J.P. Webster’s “Lorena” theme, complete with grace notes and gruppetto. In this section, Horn and Trumpet 1 do the honors, eventually joined by Tuba, and it should be played with great expression. At section C, tempo then picks up, and the arrangement presents a series of explications of the theme in various styles. The final section, I (measure 179), reprises most of the variations and ends with a partial reiteration of the “Lorena” theme. Performance time is about eight minutes, forty seconds. Tuba plays several notes near the top of its scale; otherwise, all notes are within the normal playing range of each instrument. The composer, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Quintet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1489486 Composed by Dr. Daniel N. Thrower. Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional. 45 pages. Https://gildedmusicpress.com/ #1066349. Published by https://gildedmusicpress.com/ (A0.1489486). This collection of short compositions for brass quintet was conceived specifically to supplement a dearth of appropriate and artistic original compositions for the young aspiring brass quintet. These pieces are most fitting for a good high school quintet or a beginning college ensemble that wants a conquerable challenge. With a variety of keys, styles, and tempos, they lend themselves well for deep work on the core ensemble skills of rhythmic accuracy, intonation, and dynamic balance. These brief works are also quite enjoyable for the professional quintet to perform for ever-popular school shows, or simply to read as a warmup with the focus of improving ensemble skills. Performance time for all five pieces is approximately five minutes.“Blackhawk” (duration 0:45) was originally composed in D-sharp minor as a melody to be used in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 39). The quintet version is in concert D minor for more manageable execution. This brisk four-four work is perhaps the most difficult in the collection, with demands of multiple tonguing for all the instruments as well as fairly advanced intervallic jumps. “Lamb of God” (duration 1:00) is one of many hymn tunes originally composed by Dr. Thrower for use in Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 7: Ensemble Skills (p. 54), intended to be used to tune unisons and octaves. As a tuning study it was published in the key of F major for B-flat trumpet, or concert E-flat major. The quintet version retained the original key of concert E-flat. The reverently subdued four-four tempo makes this the easiest piece in the collection, technically, though the three core ensemble skills listed in the introductory paragraph (rhythm, intonation, and balance) must still be extensively addressed. The horn part is perhaps the most demanding in “Lamb of God,” with arpeggiated discant lines toward the end.“Summer Solstice” (duration 1:10) was started on June 21, 2023, which was the summer solstice. It is a bright, cheerful piece in concert F major with a lot of interest in all the parts. One source of the title’s inspiration came from my family’s new situation living in Tokyo, Japan, where the dawn sky brightens around 4:00 AM on the longest days of the year, which obviously coincide with the summer solstice. The 70-second piece was completed four days after conception while the long days started at their earliest.“Triumph: Children’s March” (duration 1:00) was the catalyst for this collection. It started as a cute little brass quintet piece in the key of concert B-flat major, to be performed for children, such as for school concerts. The cut-time tempo is very brisk for a march, but animated little legs (or a more manageable audience activity of clapping hands) can easily handle the task. Although the first trumpet part ends up on a high C, there is an alternate note for a more comfortable ending.“Waltzing Puma” (duration 0:30) is an evocative title for an evocative piece. Like “Blackhawk,” this melody was composed as a melody for Comprehensive Trumpet Skills, Book 9: Sightreading and Transposition (p. 36). The melodies in that series took on titles of military aircraft, and this one was the helicopter “Puma.” Since this tune is in a fast three-four, it became the “Waltzing Puma.” The quintet version retains the original key of concert F minor.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1461317 By The Beach Boys. By John Phillips, Mike Love, Scott McKenzie, and Terry Melcher. Arranged by Will Corbin. Film/TV,Pop. 22 pages. Will Corbin #1040125. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461317). Beach Boys purists consider this 1988 song -- recorded two decades after the band's heyday -- a heresy. Yeah, maybe, but it was wildly popular and remains so. Never mind that there's no Kokomo in the Florida Keys. It's a town in Indiana where the surf is almost never all-time. Or maybe a private resort island in Fiji, but that was probably named after the song. And the music video for Kokomo was filmed at the Grand Floridian Hotel at Disney World in inland Central Florida, where the surf is also never quite up. But i's still a fun song, arranged here for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. If you'd like alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.
