DEVIL'S GALOP (Dick Barton Theme Tune) - TWO GUITARSFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This evocative tune was the theme music to Dick Barton Special Agent, a radio drama on the BBC many decades ago.The music is full of tension, with rising chromatic chords and long chromatic scale passages creating a constant restless feel.The roles of tune and accompaniment swap over increasingly often as the piece progresses, so the audience will have plenty to watch as well as hear.The accompaniment role is fingered, as there’s really only one place on the guitar to play the chords. The tune, though, is unfingered - there is a compromise between the short reach in high positions and the extra height of the action - you may prefer to stay up the neck, or you may wish to move up and down - please add fingering and position changes where you wish. And add slurs too, if these improve the flow of the music.Here and there, I have deliberately “respelled†some of the accidentals in a way that hopefully improves overall readability, and sometimes the two parts have two representations of the same note at the same time.A version of this was played by the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra who also managed to find time to mop their brows in the occasional pauses in the action.I hope you enjoy playing this piece! At times there are a few extended techniques required, all confined to playing on the strings, such as raised pitches, glissandi, harmonics and pizzicato.To explain the title: there are several distinct gestures or textures which circulate through the piece. However, only one is heard in its original form on its return. It features an intermittently repeated low chord on one guitar while the other traces a slow high two-part shape. One of Nazareth's most elaborate pieces, the modern brigh waltz Fantástica (Phantastica, in the original spelling) is part of Nazareth's group of concert pieces. These are songs with the greatest pianistic pretensions, which, in general, were not published during his lifetime and are rarely played. It was first published in 2008 by the portal Musica Brasilis and does not have a dedication. In his autograph manuscript there is no date; it is only known that in 1922 it already existed, as his name appears in one of the listings that Nazareth made at that time. Its subtitle may have been inspired by Chopin's first four bright waltzes. This influence is also felt in the elaborate piano technique used in several passages that demand great virtuosity. This waltz could have been part of the repertoire of pianists from the great European Romantic tradition, contemporaries of Nazareth, but who never heard of his work. Until 2012, it was recorded only twice.

Sadly there is no orchestra and massed choir to build this version in the way that the original does, but the dynamics on the score tie in with the original song.The guitar parts here are in “score and tab†and in “score alone†- there is no difference in the music, but the tab may help notation readers see how the opening section sits on the neck of the guitar.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

The origin of the tune was for a long time somewhat mysterious, as no other collector of folk tunes encountered it, and all known examples are descended from Ms. Ross’ submission to Petrie’s collection (1855). The title of the air comes from the name of the county located in Northern Ireland. The air was collected by Jane Ross of Limavady, County Londonderry, who heard it played by an itinerant piper or fiddler. The descendants of blind fiddler Jimmy McCurry assert that he is the musician from whom she transcribed the tune but there is no historical evidence to support this speculation. The tune was listed as an anonymous air, with a note attributing its collection to Jane Ross of Londonderry. This led to the descriptive title Londonderry Air being used for the piece.

Alexandre Lagoya once said: For one guitar you can write what the guitar will allow you to write. For two guitars you can write what you choose. While there is a measure of overstatement in this, it remains true that the medium of two guitars allows much greater creative freedom to the composer. There are many kinds of guitar-duo works- at one extreme the very simple, at the other the call for two virtuosi; those in this book inhabit the middle of this spectrum. They are not in effect accompanied guitar solos but equal duets in which two players of moderate technical ability converse with one another, sharing the lead. This they do without sacrificing musical interest. Two of the pieces consist of variations on folk tunes - Shades of Green uses the Irish tune The Next Market Day, while Varieties of Scotch is based on the well-known Scottish tune Ye Banks and Braes. The remaining duet is an affectionate nod in the ragtime direction of Scott Joplin. The two sets of variations are suitable for concert use, and Joblinesque is a natural ending.

Indeed, across the performances on YouTube there are different rhythms at certain points in the tune - notes that are aggressively aggressively in one version might be teased longer in another - the choices are yours to make - the soundclip on the SMP website shows you what I mean by a tight articulation compared to the score. Much of Adele's improvisation at the end of the track is captured here, unlike some other published editions.Guitar One goes up to top G, but there’s no fingering as you may want to choose when to change position. Guitar Two, by contrast, is more straightforward though the first beat is often written to come early - at the back of the previous bar or measure.Whilst it would have been nice to swap the parts over at the phrase boundaries, the change of pitch and the way the melody overlaps the bar-lines mean that a changeover would spoil the flow and balance.The metronome mark is close to the speed of the original, but the lush tone of the guitar allows you to go a little slower if it makes for a tighter performance.The parts are laid out with extra sample pages at the front so that you can preview some of each part and some of the full score on screen before purchase.
