IN AN OCTOPUS'S GARDEN - GUITAR DUET (one of two arrangements)For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This wonderfully upbeat piece of music makes a great concert piece or encore. It contains all the material from one of the recordings of this piece, including the intro and the instrumental break in the middle of the piece.My arrangement is at the Intermediate level. The accompaniment comprises a ragtime swinging bass which makes the piece motor along. The tune is handed from player to player, switching at each phrase boundary, and appears in three different octaves during the piece, while still remaining on the playable part of the guitar neck.There are no repeats in this piece, and that allows changes to the texture in the successive verses.I’ve performed this piece in concert and it’s always been a great crowd-pleaser.I have also published a version which suits a student/teacher duo or a duo of mixed abilities which is a little easier to play. PERFORMANCE VERSIONFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes You’ll be tempted to say Oh, not another Cavatina arrangement, but read on...The beautifully melodic Cavatina was made famous by John Williams, who arranged the piece for solo guitar and produced some effortless recordings of it. Audiences equate effortless with easy, but it can be a bit of a beast to play well.Why this arrangement?I’ve lowered the key by one tone which makes many of the chords sound more mellow.I’ve fixed the ungainly jumps in the bass line which came as a constraint of playing up the neck on solo guitar.I’ve improved the connectivity of the middle voices from chord to chord so the chord changes sound more effortless and natural.A side effect is that everything is easier and the sustain seems more effortless.My duet arrangement comes in 2 formats... This one is a performance version (in which the workload is shared equally and there’s a truly effortless switching of parts in the middle), set in score only for two intermediate players.A separate one (for student and teacher) comprises a melody line and an arpeggio accompaniment, set in both score and score+tab. TANZ and HUPFAUF - 2 GuitarsFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This edition contains Tanz der Wäsherin and Hupfauf. Both will be familiar to many guitarists as they have featured over the years in a number of Graded Examinations.The countermelody is a new addition, which I originally wrote for flute, so that the piece slotted seamlessly into the background music I played with my flute partner at a friend’s wedding.The Tanz is often mistakenly translated as Dance of the Washerwoman, and it’s also known as Wascha Mesa. The Hupfauf is a companion piece, set in a different rhythm but with ostensibly the same harmonic structure (apart from the Tanz’s Coda which is absent from the Hupfauf).Each dance has two beats in the bar, and the two dances can flow into each other or can be played with a short break. When they run into each other, it makes sense to maintain the two-beat pulse, but if this makes the Hupfauf stressful to play, one can maintain instead the value of the half note (minim), so that the Hupfauf proceeds at a more modest pace.You can play the whole piece (each player plays tune and countermelody in turn), or you can shorten the piece by omitting the sections starting at A and B, which also makes the piece ideal for a mixed ability duo, as one player keeps the tune and one keeps the countermelody.Feel free to add dynamics, a little more articulation and possibly some tone color changes.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

Bach Prelude from BWV998 for 2 GUITARSFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This wonderfully lyrical Bach Prelude is one of the most famous preludes to fit onto guitar.I hope you’ll find it’s also one of the best to fit onto two guitars!The original was in the key of Eb major and the facsimile score I used as the basis for my arrangement was for keyboard. I’ve simply taken all the original music and split it across two guitars in the key of D, to give a wonderful stereo effect and to make the phrases stand out. The original had very specific rests in the bass lines which are pretty much automatic on a harpsichord with limited sustain, and quite easy to do on a modern piano. For a guitar, the mix of open and stopped strings can make consistent note lengths quite hard to achieve, and I have included a second arrangement in which the bass notes are notated as ringing on (as indeed most solo guitarists do, starting with the first note of the piece!). The result is a score which is much easier on the eye, and the “decay†of the guitar's bass notes mean that it doesn’t sound at all untidy - indeed it sounds more mellow.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. An example is his use of the Phrygian mode and other tonal inflections more or less alien to European art music. The earliest known surviving manuscript of Alessandro Marcello’s Oboe concerto in D minor exists not as a score from the composer’s own hand, but as an arrangement for solo keyboard by contemporary J.S. Bach. This arrangement, dating from 1713-1714, is part of a collection of works entitled 16 Konzerte nach verschiedenen Meistern, BWV 972–987 (16 concerts according to different masters). It is Bach’s arrangement on which this duo version for guitar is heavily based. Bach discovered this concerto and other works by Italian masters while under the employment of Duke Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar.. The musical library of the ducal court was rich with orchestral works by Vivaldi, Corelli, Torelli, Frescobaldi and of course Marcello (both Benedetto and Alessandro). Bach saw this as an opportunity to learn about the Italian style, and proceeded to arrange sixteen of these concerti for solo harpsichord. Texturally, Bach would mimic the alternating tutti and solo sections by assigning them to different manuals of the harpsichord. Twenty years later, Bach would compose his own “Italian Concerto†BWV 971, for solo keyboard, which remains as one of his most recognizable works. The Marcello concerto is in typical 3 movement form: Andante e spiccato, Adagio, and Presto. For this arrangement, single-string fingerings of melodic passages were favoured for the first movement, for the sake of articulation and uniformity of the line. Also, the melodic material is passed between both guitars to achieve a more concertante setting and to enhance passages with repeated material. The second movement maintains a soloist/accompanist setting throughout. Although it was tempting to use both guitars to fill out the harmony of the opening and closing sections, the performance proved to be more effective with one guitarist able to solely concentrate on the famous melody. The final movement, like the first, divides the melodic material between both guitars in order to give both players interesting material and to give the first guitar a bit of breathing room.

The Inventions and Sinfonias BWV 772-801, also known as the Two- and Three-Part Inventions, are a collection of thirty short keyboard compositions by J. S. Bach (1685-1750): 15 inventions, which are 2-part contrapuntal pieces, and 15 sinfonias, which are 3-part contrapuntal pieces. They were originally written as musical exercises for his students. The two groups of pieces are both arranged in order of ascending key, each group covering eight major and seven minor keys. The inventions were composed in Köthen (1717-23); the sinfonias, on the other hand, were probably not finished until the beginning of the Leipzig (1723-50) period.

Peters. The Album Leaves were composed over the span of almost fifteen years. As such, they present a fascinating cross-section of Grieg's pianistic and compositional development. They are arranged in chronological order as follows: Allegro con moto (1864), Allegretto espressivo (1874), Vivace (1876), and Andantino serioso (1878).Having realized some years ago that due to Grieg’s way of writing for the piano, that they would fit wonderfully on two guitars, I began with this set, and then moved onto more of his works, finally transcribing his complete set of 10 books of Lyric Pieces (66 pieces in all), all of which are available as separate publications at Les Productions D’Oz. Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. Soren's Jig was written in a Scottish style, highlighting his genetic heritage. As the finale for this suite, each other gandkid's theme is revisited. Performance time is 4 minutes and 09 seconds, with a demand level of mostly intermediate with a few advanced sections.
