Written with amateur big bands in mind, there is enough to ensure experienced adult musicians have fun without being burdened by too many technical difficulties.A high impact tutti introduction is followed by an understated exposition of the tune on the piano in the style of Count Basie. Muted trumpets are then accompanied by the trombones and sax. The short bridge is led by the saxophones before the trombones restate the theme. This arrangement is a fast moving, swinging chart similar to the Buddy Rich, Woody Herman big bands of the 1960s. It may look like a long arrangement when you first look at the parts but its performance time is 4 min 40 sec. if performed at the metronome marking of 216bpm at the top of the arrangement.  It has featured solos for the 2nd trumpet, tenor sax and trombone as well as a shout section. There are various types of interludes between the choruses which create an interesting change for each section. This is an arrangement that will require above average performers of a university or professional type player to perform. It is truly a showpiece for a jazz ensemble that is at the higher level of performance. A score is also available for this piece.

At the time of composing the carol, Dix worked as an insurance company manager and had been struck by a severe illness. While recovering, he underwent a spiritual renewal that led him to write several hymns, including lyrics to this carol that was subsequently set to the tune of Greensleeves, a traditional English folk song.

Here's a show chart of mine which can sometimes being saved for Christmas but I believe is suitable all year long.The tricky things to remember for the band is 1) the intro should be counted in ONE because of the syncopation,2) the chart has 4 bars in the early third with a 4/4 feel, even though we never leave the 3/4 tempo marking and 3) the ending is a slow and deliberate contrast to this jazz waltz. Getting into this sow tempo requires RR tracks.
