I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.

A simple drone style bassline in unison from the Cello and Double bass provide a nice moody texture throughout the piece. The piano is the main feature of this piece, utilising a granular piano effect and a sample of locusts to give this piece a mysterious atmosphere with some familiarity.How to play:While this piece can work in a band setting, I feel that the piano player is the most active and will need some good friends who are ok playing very simple lines with little variation if they wish to play the other parts.I feel it's best to set this up for a solo performance with a little more effort and preparation. I think it's best to use a midi-controller keyboard with both a sustain pedal and expression pedal. I suggest programming the bass with a click track or metronome, the locusts and granular effect will need their volume to be assigned to the expression pedal so you can bring them in and out as needed. Mostly That is a lead sheet written in RealBook style, which can be played in many settings by a soloist or other jazz combo. It has a 24 bar form, fusion feel and sounds great with a strong back-beat behind its 3/4 time. I chose the key of E Major so that the 6 string guitar could utilize the lowest of its open strings tuned to standard tuning. It really opens up the fret-board. The chord-changes and melody break away from the key slightly at times, to create some dissonance and fluctuation. The solos section evokes blues and a bit of grit with the use of the dominant #9 and flat9. Play the solos with intention and vigor. The title was inspired by a brief conversation I had with a stranger in New York City. I was asked a rather broad question and didn't have a response so I said, Mostly That. I guess, because the first one (Can’t Buy Me Love) went so well, I had to keep it going (shameless plug alert: CBML is available from both sheetmusicdirect.com and sheetmusicplus.com.) And I Love Her is a great tune, and I tried to find some creative ways to expand on that. It features your most lyrical flugel player, and you’ll need woodwind doubles: 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, and bass clarinet. Ensemble: This is pretty straightforward: even 8th, bossa-ish vibe. Trumpets 1, 3, and 4 are on flugels full-time, except for the harmon trumpet bit in mm. 70-75. I feel the 5/4 bars as 2+3, and would conduct accordingly. Overall, think mellow, understated, warm/fuzzy on this. Rhythm Section: I really hear nylon string guitar on this, so please ask your guitarist to bring the extra axe. Piano, guitar, and bass: If there’s a notated paty without chord symbols, please play as written. If it’s chord symbols only, play/comp tastefully, as always. If there are both, you can do either. If the written part supports the ensemble, I’d suggest going that route. I LOVE having guitar and vibes in the rhythm section, but in general I’m not a big fan of having them play off of the same part. So, please observe the “play only if no guitar (or vibes etc.) indications. Drums, I’ve indicated some basic grooves (note the feel change in the bridge) but I trust you. Just keep things tasty and understated. Solo Section: Flugel solo…after the first read-through, you’ll know when it’s just you on the melody, and when your part is doubled. Feel free to play more expressively on the former. There are some short snippets of changes mixed in with the melodic statements; think of these more like fills than the official “solo section” which is mm. 50-80, the AAB of the form. Don’t swing for the fences in spots like mm. 44-48; instead, float on top of the ensemble sound. And, keep things simple from n. 91 out. As of this writing, I don’t have a recording of this, other than the MIDI demo. If you end up with a nice recording and would be OK sharing that with me, please reach out!

Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised. Rhapsody In Blue is considered an American musical masterpiece. This is known as the Stride theme because of it’s resembling a typical stride piano accompaniment so prominent in the era. Here, it is presented as a stand-alone tune. Little Big Band- The arrangement is playable with rhythm section (piano/guitar, bass, drums)and 3 to 6 horns. The harmonic structure for the solos is indicated and is limited so the soloists must think in lines, not just a lot of notes. You must use claves full time---no claves--no Latin Music. Intonation and a relaxed feel are needed to make this swing. If there are no solos, skip letter E/EE and go to F for the 2 bar chase solos, into the cascade, rhythm section solo, quiet interlude to sign. etc.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.
