This is the traditional baseball theme (Take Me Out to the Ballgame) set in an energetic jazz band swing chart. After a brief intro to lay it down, the melody starts in a lazy swing tempo with a lilting alto solo (a-la street player in front of the park) and soon builds to a full ensemble shout then a lively up-tempo accentuated by energetic interjections. There is an open solo section before the head is repeated with a typical Tin-Pan-Alley ending. Logical rehearsal marks and generous technique items make rehearsal a snap! Ossia notes (lead trumpet) are included for developing / younger artists. This is a super-duper exciting and moderately challenging chart which really showcases your band and the jazz band at its very finest. Show Type Tune Back in 1989 I was taking an arranging course at NEC taught by George Russell (who subsequently received the Genius Grant for Lifetime Achievement). I worked on this big band arrangement for about a year. My concept was to take a Bill Evans tune and harmonize his solo for saxes within the body of the arrangement. About a week before graduation it finally came time for the class to have their work heard. I was SO excited! A big band was assembled and after a few days of classmate’s charts workshopped, George Russell fell ill, and I never got to hear my arrangement. I was devastated. It had taken me months to arrange, and hand-write the 17 parts as back then, no computers of course!So, tearfully it all went into a red folder—and eventually made its way to the bottom of a box, a box that somehow followed me throughout life. Recently concerned about doing nothing all week at family camp—I thought to myself, with my present knowledge of music notation software, why not dig up that dusty red folder and input the chart to finally hear it —32 years later? I figured if the work had any merit I could print it out and bring it to Library Band ! So. in the tiny log cabin with laptop and travel keys, I began, soon falling into what can only be described as timeless awareness—future self collaborating with inner conservatory undergrad—and dare say, I was rather impressed with her 😂 Although a few tweaks needed, the work proved nothing short of a sound effort. Tying up this life-long loose-end feels nothing short of spiritually inspired. ðŸ˜.

Written for the T-Town Jazz Band and named for a Tulsa landmark, this is a big band swing tune in F minor blues with solos and exposure aplenty most notably in the third trombone part. The piece follows a chap who is happily walking (or jaunting) down Cherry Street. Three other guys come in and pick up his melody as a unison trio. This moves into a quick verse in the ensemble before the four players each take a solo turn almost like a combo. The party then takes off with the full band before it moves back to the trio wandering off while crowd bids them farewell and the original soloist takes a final turn. The reason there is such a focus on the third trombone is because this piece is dedicated to Dale Turner who was the third trombone player in the T-Town Jazz Band and a founding member of the band. We tried to get him to improv a solo here and there, but he wouldn't do it. We figured if we wrote it into his part, he would play it, and so the next piece I was writing was Cherry Street Jaunt, so the 3rd trombone got a lot of love. Unfortunately, the band had to shut down for a time due to COVID-19, and during that time, Dale passed due to complications from it. As a result, he never saw the part I wrote to trick him into a solo. The MP3 is generated from the composition program, but the video link is a live performance.

I arranged this piece at the request of my friends in the 2020-2021 Viking Jazz Ensemble at Wisconsin Lutheran High School. We hoped to do Blame it on the Boogie for that year's Prism concert, and they had asked my director to find an arrangement. He found one, but it was out of print. We were already playing an arrangement I did of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, so my friends turned to me and said, You can do one more, right? A year later, the 2021-2022 Jazz Ensemble performed this in front of 4 sold-out Prism concerts. This arrangement won first place in the WSMA 2022 Student Composition Project Arrangement Category- High School Division. This arrangement starts with the original melody and harmonies as presented on the original recording. The intro features bass and bari sax, the verse melody is passed to the saxophones, and the chorus is in the hands of the trumpets. I know. Scary. The second verse takes a turn, changing keys to the relative minor and changing feels into a jazz-latin groove. The melody starts in the trumpets and moves to the saxophones, while everyone else is comping on a montuno-based rhythm. The second chorus serves as a Breakdown section and transitions the piece into the solo section. The solo section is heavily inspired by the steel pan music of Trinidad and Tobago. The transition from the chorus into the solo section is stolen from Summersong, a piece of steel pan literature. The chord progression is ripped from the soca tune Pan in A Minor by Lord Kitchener. The backgrounds are traditional strum rhythms from the genre. The transition out of the solo section is a chromatic line also commonly used in steel pan music, especially pieces performed for the annual steel pan competition Panorama. The final chorus is presented in the same style and key as the original recording. Some slight changes are made in the backgrounds, and the entire band brings back the idea from the introduction to bring the piece to an end. This piece exists for one reason only: for you and the audience to have fun.

This is a lively, up-tempo swing piece that was inspired by the mayhem and frustrations of rush hour travel. The arrangement of the main theme features a small combo of Alto Sax, Trumpet, Trombone and Guitar with the rhythm section providing rhythmic counterpoint. Solo space is provided for 1st Tenor Sax, 2nd Trumpet, 1st Alto Sax and 1st Trombone. The solo sections may be opened up for players to take additional choruses if desired. A shout chorus provides the band with an opportunity to let loose. There is a fair amount of independence between sections, rhythmic shots and some fragmented melodic ideas that will require careful attention to execute accurately. Here is a setting for a standard jazz ensemble with ONE main Idea: Let's NOT make this a guitar piece, but a Horn Piece. So, we have all the same structures as the original recording, right down to the time changes, and the shift from slow to fast and back again. The saxes are given the solo vocal line harmonized as a typical sax soli. The brass take Queen's vocal overdubs and operatic elements, and are given a jazz rather than a pop harmonic setting, with some extended and altered harmony, rather than just the triads and 7th chords of the Queen vocal. Sax ranges go to the top of the horn for lead alto, and go to a concert Ab just above the staff for the lead trpt. Trombone goes to a high Bb in the lead solo. First ending should appear at ms. 29 to the repeat. 2nd ending at ms. 35The guitar solos are given to either the piano, in octaves, or the brass, so that a guitar player is an option here, not a necessity. Revised version here, with ending placement errors all fixed up! This is NOT a jazz chart in the improvisational sense: it is a pop song set for a jazz ensemble. Our audio clip shows the opening trombone solo with the piano accomp, into the main vocal line harmonized with saxes. This chart has several unusual aspects, all set within this familiar format. The theme is stated by the trumpets, then, the saxes take a one-chorus interlude on a pentatonic figure. The first (and ONLY) soloist on the audio track is the tenor sax. BUT, the chart is designed to have the alto, tenor, bari, and finally All THREE saxes blowing their blues away at once! A similar treatment follows with the trumpets. Three blues choruses from the piano give the horns a break, and a SampleSolo is included for this instrument ONLY, due to the nature of the group improv that is structured into the piece. Then the trombones have their 12-bar interlude, and the lead trombone plays three more 12-bar sets, but just the one horn, as we've had enough group enthusiasm at this point! At the conclusion, the three interlude sections all come back, but simultaneously, as they have been designed to fit together. Then the final statement of the theme is played in hocket or stretto, whichever term you choose, with one voice starting and the other two choirs following behind. This chart can be played using only one soloist per section, or with the entire group solos, or anything in between, for that matter! If you have a blowing band, you'll want to show them off! Running time with a single soloist per section is 3 mins 45 secs. considerably longer with the multiple and group solos. MBB.

The title expresses my disdain for contending with monster SUVs when driving on Connecticut Avenue in Washington, DC. As I envision this music, it is funky and adventurous. The piece is a minimalist composition -- the melody is only 16 bars. However, it has expanded improvisation concepts for the soloist and the ensemble. The ensemble's collective improvisation is to sound like music coming out of car windows in traffic. The sounds change quickly. Different kinds of music come, go, and overlap. Radios (or electronics) may be used for additional layers of sound. The soloists use four chord progression patterns. Each soloist determines which patterns to play and their sequence. The patterns can be played in any order. Ideally, the patterns are determined within a performance instead of before. The soloist communicates the patterns, and when to shift to a new pattern, to the ensemble by hand signals. The ensemble (including horn players) can improvise backgrounds and interactions with the soloist. Music styles can also shift within a solo. Performers can take the music in any creative direction they want to go with it. Note: There are differences between the score and the demo recording. The small group recording was made (from a lead sheet) several years before my mid-size ensemble score was written. For this new recording, the horn parts from my score were added to the earlier recording. The video syncs the pages of the score with the recording as closely as possible.
