It's been designed to be played by large or small instrumental ensembles. It uses swing eighth note rhythms and incorporates most of the usual instruments of a concert band or orchestra, or jazz ensemble. Lyrics are not included, however it retains all six verses as it goes through key changes and a D.S. al Coda. Thus the lyrics from a hymn book could be used to sing all six verses. The first verse is a slow chorale style passage. Then it goes to fast tempo jazz style, much like a New Orleans style derge, or funeral march. The piece is 2:45 minutes in length, but could be shortened, by about 50 seconds, by playing straight through without taking the D.S. al Coda. It would also make an impressive half time show piece for marching band. A performance/play along track is available separately - see item number S0.873189.

You've heard Nothing You Can Take From Me from the film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds And Snakes (sung by Rachel Zegler) many times, but you'll be gladly astounded to hear this big band chart that puts a spin into it with great measure! After a maestoso rendition of the first verse by the brass section, the drums set up the tempo into a tour de force medium fast tempo tune influenced by Duke Jordan's Jordu (recorded by the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet) & Bobby Timmons's Moanin' (recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) that while retaining much of the original tune (verse, refrain & bridge) brings out a distinctive hard bop-influenced twist coupled with solos by tenor sax & drums as well as a powerful soli by the trumpet section and a shout chorus moment by the full band. (A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn). As jazz history books like Gunther Schuller’s tell us, Benny Goodman’s rendition of Jelly Roll Morton’s ‘King Porter Stomp’ in the arrangement of Fletcher Henderson ‘ushered in the Swing Era’. That this tune already had a long and venerable career was obvious to every jazz lover: starting with Morton’s own recording from 1923, it was revived on a regular basis by Fletcher Henderson for his orchestras of the ‘twenties and ‘thirties. He then adapted the tune for the Benny Goodman Orchestra, which made it a hit in 1935. And from that moment on, the tune stayed popular: in 1975 it was recorded by the Gil Evans Orchestra for the album ‘There Comes A Time’. But during the ‘twenties, Henderson picked up more ‘jazz and stomp’-tunes (as opposed to the Tin Pan Alley/Broadway fare) and had them arranged for his orchestra. One such example is a tune credited to pianist/bandleader/businessman Clarence Williams (although other sources state that it was actually written by Joseph Joe Jordan, one of the early ragtime ‘professors’). That is the composition ‘Hop Off’, a very swinging, hard-driving multi-strain tune. Henderson recorded it in 1927. However, unlike ‘King Porter Stomp’, Henderson never chose to ‘adapt’ this tune for his ‘thirties swing-style orchestra, and so it never became a part of the Goodman Orchestra’s band book. What if Henderson had done so, and in 1935 had handed over the tune to Goodman as an addition for his ‘Let’s Dance’-library? ‘Hop Off’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. Based on the 1927 Henderson arrangement, it juxtaposes the two main strains of the original composition for maximum variety. Plenty of breaks, stoptime-sections and other ‘hot’ stuff. Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Eb3. Solo’s for clarinet, tenor sax 1, tpt 2, trb 1 and a brief four-bar spot for the drummer at the end. If your band is able to play ‘King Porter Stomp’, this tune should cause no problems. The only exception is the presence of a solo clt part. The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’: fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. Must be able to be heard over a shouting ensemble chorus. If your band has such a player: have fun!

Show Type Tune Back in 1989 I was taking an arranging course at NEC taught by George Russell (who subsequently received the Genius Grant for Lifetime Achievement). I worked on this big band arrangement for about a year. My concept was to take a Bill Evans tune and harmonize his solo for saxes within the body of the arrangement. About a week before graduation it finally came time for the class to have their work heard. I was SO excited! A big band was assembled and after a few days of classmate’s charts workshopped, George Russell fell ill, and I never got to hear my arrangement. I was devastated. It had taken me months to arrange, and hand-write the 17 parts as back then, no computers of course!So, tearfully it all went into a red folder—and eventually made its way to the bottom of a box, a box that somehow followed me throughout life. Recently concerned about doing nothing all week at family camp—I thought to myself, with my present knowledge of music notation software, why not dig up that dusty red folder and input the chart to finally hear it —32 years later? I figured if the work had any merit I could print it out and bring it to Library Band ! So. in the tiny log cabin with laptop and travel keys, I began, soon falling into what can only be described as timeless awareness—future self collaborating with inner conservatory undergrad—and dare say, I was rather impressed with her 😂 Although a few tweaks needed, the work proved nothing short of a sound effort. Tying up this life-long loose-end feels nothing short of spiritually inspired. ðŸ˜.

Written for the T-Town Jazz Band and named for a Tulsa landmark, this is a big band swing tune in F minor blues with solos and exposure aplenty most notably in the third trombone part. The piece follows a chap who is happily walking (or jaunting) down Cherry Street. Three other guys come in and pick up his melody as a unison trio. This moves into a quick verse in the ensemble before the four players each take a solo turn almost like a combo. The party then takes off with the full band before it moves back to the trio wandering off while crowd bids them farewell and the original soloist takes a final turn. The reason there is such a focus on the third trombone is because this piece is dedicated to Dale Turner who was the third trombone player in the T-Town Jazz Band and a founding member of the band. We tried to get him to improv a solo here and there, but he wouldn't do it. We figured if we wrote it into his part, he would play it, and so the next piece I was writing was Cherry Street Jaunt, so the 3rd trombone got a lot of love. Unfortunately, the band had to shut down for a time due to COVID-19, and during that time, Dale passed due to complications from it. As a result, he never saw the part I wrote to trick him into a solo. The MP3 is generated from the composition program, but the video link is a live performance.

When my friend Werner told me to listen to Smooth Operator, I thought he meant the well-known mid-80s smooth jazz number by the British band Sade. Instead, I got a surprise. This Smooth Operator was totally different, totally unknown to me, and provoked me to find out about Dorothy Dandridge and her life. I encourage you to do so too.The album Smooth Operator was released in 1999. However, Dorothy Dandridge had recorded this song nearly 40 years earlier, in February 1961, with – according to the sleeve notes from Verve Records – an unknown orchestra and unknown producer. The arranger of the band charts is also not credited. It seems there was just one take, because when Ms. Dandridge enters at the pickup to measure 5, it takes the rhythm section a few beats to fall into line with her; one trumpet also enters too early in measure 74! Notwithstanding, this is an amazing, very cool number, and if your female vocalist feels up to the challenge of these cheeky, risqué lyrics, then these easy charts will enable your big band to recreate the piece.Although the style is dated and recalls a bygone era, I feel this song is a good way to remember this brilliant actress, singer, and dancer who died so young, and draw attention to the injustices she suffered and which are still with us today. The tagline to the film of her life starring Halle Berry sums up her life: Right woman. Right place. Wrong time.

Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308790). *THIS ACCOMPANIES THE VOCAL ARRANGEMENT* This arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979627). New Tango No. 1: Movement (for jazz soloist, 5 wind instruments, and rhythm section) is an abstract piece. Inspired by the tango, it invokes dance movement as well as explores movement in and out of time in the music. The soloist's part is entirely improvised. The rhythm section goes between time and free-time. The soloist cues the rhythm section on when to make time and harmonic changes. The background ensemble is in free-time with each note conducted. During solos the background ensemble can improvise interactions with the soloist. This piece is highly dependent upon the soloist and ensemble to bring the music to life and take the audience on a journey. Space and understatement are important features of this music. The open, floating free-time melody and the space between its phrases enable the rhythm section to have a prominent role in playing layers of lines, textures, and colors. Using accordion and guitar (along with piano, bass, and drums) is highly recommended. A string instrument(s) such as violin or cello can improvise additional layers with the rhythm section. One of my essential concepts in this piece is for the ensemble to have the sound of a tango band (as closely as possible); however, the music has a great amount of freedom. The score was originally conceived for woodwind quintet (with alto flute). Alternate parts are provided for an assortment of commonly-used wind instruments. In this way, the piece can be performed by various combinations of instruments. As another possibility, two (or more) musicians can be used on each wind instrument part. This option of having doubled parts -- with either same or different instruments on a part -- is an easy way for larger ensembles to perform this music. The ensemble enters with a stronger statement that builds to the head.The guitar plays the A section of the head in octave or single notes. The bridges section swings as a single eighth note guitar line. The background starts with the sax section followed with counterpoint between the trumpet and trombone sections.The second time through the form, Tenor Sax 1 solos over the first half changes and background. The guitar takes over solo on the last half of the form which leads into an echo of the intro and builds up to the shout chorus.The shout builds to a melodic trumpet high D followed by an obvious quotation by the ensemble. Repetition of the ensemble intro with a main theme fragment is followed by brass pyramids and a final theme stinger to close out the piece. 160 bpm per quarter note is a suggested tempo but the piece can be taken faster for more excitement and energy. The piece is written in 4/4 for the swing bridge section. The samba sections should be felt in 2/2 with the accent on the 2. The quarter note always stays the same.
