If, like me, you’re always looking for a new sound for your festive season concert, want to move away from the usual catalog of songs we hear every year, then Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas could be a good choice. The simplicity of this song sung by Carla Thomas in the early 1960s has been reproduced here in this easy big band arrangement in the original key.The lines played by strings in the original song work well here on the saxes. Trumpets and trombones reinforce the rhythmic patterns. A new melodic phrase derived from the song itself and played by the saxes replaces the introductory two-measure vamp of the original. This complementary melodic line is heard again during the piece and is repeated an octave higher by the trumpets in a brief interlude between the bridge and the third verse. The fade-out ending of the original has been replaced here by an open section with solos cued in alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet (or flugel horn), trombone, guitar and piano. Alternatively, your vocalist can improvise over these four measures or maybe alternate with a soloist. However, this four-measure section is optional; you could just skip to the last two measures.

Published by Roger Aldridge (A0.979665). Fanfare (for 4 or 5 wind instruments and rhythm section) was inspired by Brazilian brass bands. It was written for music students at the Sandy Spring Friends School in Maryland. This music has an exuberant spirit with samba rhythms churning under contemporary harmonic voicings. It is intended to be a short piece; however, the vamp at the end can be extended with a solo or collective improvisation. Another option is to have a percussion intro before the horn section enters with the opening chords. While Fanfare was draws upon Brazilian music, it is in my own style. Unlike my other pieces for mid-size ensemble, the rhythm section is optional for Fanfare. In this way, the piece can be performed by woodwind or brass quintets, clarinet ensemble, or sax quartet/quintet as several possibilities. Additionally, it can be easily adapted for big bands and larger ensembles by doubling players on parts so that each line has a distinctive blending of tone colors. Suggested assignment of parts for a big band: I -- 4 trumpets (open); II -- clarinet, soprano sax; III - alto sax, trombone (open); IV - tenor sax, trombone (cup), trombone (bucket); V - baritone sax, bass trombone (open). The timeless sounds of the Vince Guaraldi Trio from the “Charlie Brown Christmas†1960’s television special was expanded to an exciting rendition recorded by the Doc Watkins big band. This arrangement captures the spirit of that recording and observes the original key of both recordings. This is an advanced level arrangement where solid high brass ranges are needed. The opening piano part is faithful to the original Guaraldi version, then opens up into latin-flavored open solos section where Trumpet and Trombone soloists can stretch out for a little while. The rhythm section parts are all fully notated other than the solo section, where the initial 2-chord changes of the groove is written out and can be directly repeated thereafter. There is an open vamp after the trombone solo to allow for an extended percussion feature, yet this can be cut and move directly into the ending instead. A great way to add this holiday standard onto your program!
