Here it is!This song is based on the poem Christmas Wishes written by contemporary author and poet Mary White Pustrom. Mary wrote many poems with the theme of Christmas, including what she thought people should wish for at Christmas. While so many adults wish for a new car, a sparkling diamond ring, or celebrating with a nice vacation in the tropics, she believes that Christmas wishes should be taken a step further by considering the wishes and needs of others more so than our own. In her poem Christmas Wishes, her desire for reaching out to others and granting them their wishes for the simple things in life take on great meaning: Christmas Wishes by Mary White Pustrom Now that Christmas is drawing near I cannot help but seeAll the poor and needy people who are reaching out to me. It seems that everywhere I look there is a need to fill; I feel so inadequate when their wishes I can't fill. Among the lights and decorations, there is hunger and despair, Faces filled with sadness while bright carols fill the air; Little children who are cold and hungry wait for Santa Claus, Wishing that he would bring them food, for that's a worthy cause. Others laughing, smiling, singing - so completely unaware Of all the pain and suffering that's around them everywhere; They wish for generosity in our thoughts, time, and deeds, And wish that here at Christmas time, someone could fill their needs. My wish is that we reach out to our sisters and our brothers, Who depend on us for kindness from one to another; Fill our hearts with Christmas cheer, and teach us how to share, So that Christmas wishes will be fulfilled all throughout the year. It sounds like she might have the right idea. At this time of year, it is so easy to get caught up in buying and receiving presents, the lights, and the Christmas tree, without considering the simple needs of others. Maybe this year, these simple wishes will come true for some: · Sick little children to be healed · Homeless people and children to find a family · For the less fortunate to have enough food, clothing, shelter, and shoes on their feet · That no one spends Christmas lonely and alone, and spent the way it should be, with loving family and friends. The humorous story of a young turtle who falls in love with, and is rejected by, a “blazingly beauteous†flamingo is one that both singers and audiences will find enjoyable. Fields penned a more serious ending for the love-sick turtle, but the composers couldn’t bear to add it to this song for children’s choirs. Mary and Joseph lose track of twelve-year-old Jesus for three days, and when they finally find him, he is sitting in his Father's house--demonstrating with his questions a great understanding of God. Within the musical is a reassuringly human message: even parents chosen by God can lose a child; even a perfect child can give his parents anxiety. The message is sure to comfort anyone who has ever been a parent, a child, or even those who have misplaced Jesus for a while. The musical can be produced with a minimum of costumes, props, and scenery. At under 25 minutes, it is short enough to fit into a worship service but is solid enough to stand alone. Stage directions, production notes, and simple prop, costume, and scenery ideas are included, but feel free to adapt any of the suggestions to your situation.

The lyrics were written by Rinkart in 1636, the melody by Cruger in 1647, and the popular harmony by Mendlessohn in 1840.This arrangement begins with a Handelian keyboard introduction, modulates to the 1st Verse for Unison choir with a new homophonic reharmonization for accompaniment, then modulates to Verse 2 which is a softer Unison with a drone accompaniment and a voice solo antiphon, then a final modulation into Verse 3 which is Unison with optional traditional SATB hymn parts.Since it is in Choral Unison we have used it here in the National Cathedral for gathered massed choirs from around the country to celebrate the official Government Holiday of National Day of Thanksgiving. I am aware that one country has also used this piece as part of the Investiture Ceremony to install their new Bishop. The addition of the Psalm antiphons gives it a Nationalistic angle as well. The video format is designed especially for use by choirs singing remotely on an online platform such as Zoom, Cleanfeed, Jamulus, or other. Text is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I LXXXIII lines 3362-3364:  “Thus I saw and understode that our feith is oure light in our night, which light is God, our endless day.†The soundtrack of night sounds changing to dawn reflects the message of hope in Julian’s text. Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†Her beautiful Medieval English words reassure us with the hope that our faith in God is our light in times of trouble. This is evident starting in the two introductory measures, which grow from a single note and immediately introduce the tune. The introductory harmonic language is reused throughout the first verse, which closes with a solo flute soaring above the final note. The solo flute continues its melody in tandem with the tune in the second verse. The third verse features a tenor melody on an English tuba stop while the upper accompanimental voices explore their own melody. After a brief transition to full organ, the final verse features the upper voices in a soaring descant, capitulating on an ascending scale to a high F. The text foreshadows the message of the advent season (Lord, quickly come… with all thine angels) while the harmonic and musical drama with the descant paint the text and foreshadow the musical jubilation of Christmas. As an anthem, this setting is quick for a choir of any size to learn, while as a concertato it allows the music director, organist, or even pianist the flexibility to greatly enhance congregational song.
