From early days on Sergey Beltiukov compositions appealed to different genres of violin music. At that time he composed «Tambourine» and «Rose of the Wind» for violin and piano. The works are characterised by bright originality, filled with new, sometimes very complex techniques of textural presentation for the violin pieces. Melodic riches, competence, reliance on classical traditions and skillful use of new means of expression contributed to the wide popularity of these particular works of the composer. They are included in the curriculum for Belarusian music studies in higher educational institutions of Belarus, as well as firmly entrenched in the concert repertoire of famous musicians both in the Republic of Belarus and abroad: in The Netherlands, England, Germany, Russia and other countries. Each of the pieces: «Tambourine» and «Rose of the Wind», included in this compilation, is typified by its bright character and melodic freshness. In 2022 I was commissioned to write a piece which would accompany a proposal submitted to the College Music Society conference in Boise, ID. Part of the proposal suggested music that celebrated the rich musical heritage of the Northwest. In looking around at what that meant, I discovered a curious fact about Boise: it has the only Basque heritage museum in the country. Suddenly the wheels got to turning! Basquing (2022) seeks to invoke... bask, if one will, in the sounds and feelings of another time and place. The inspiration of the piece comes from the Basque region of France with quotations from folksong, fiddle music, and a general vibe of French impressionism. The piece opens with the folksong Atzo Goizean, the lyrics to which invoke the folksy elements of village living (talking about waking to the thrush’s song, fathers arranging marriages, etc.). The urge to ‘word paint’ the folk song with it references to thrushes and partridges, is tempting, but the urge was avoided in this case, instead opting for a general “vibeâ€, or feeling. The next section avoids quotation altogether, instead opting to steep into the mystique environment created before. The last major portion of the piece utilizes what was billed (to me at least) as a Basque fiddle tune (the title lost as it seems the scholarly research on the subject and tunes that comprise the genre are lacking even by those who claim to have some knowledge of it). Assuming the best, however, the fiddle tune quoted in Basquing is meant to be a musical representation of familial resemblance to the fiddle music of the Pacific Northwest and how folk music of all varieties is at one time so specific yet at the same time broad in its understanding across cultures. Commissioned in 2022 by Arthur Houle (pianist) and Joung Hoon Song (violinist) for the Pacific Northwest College Music Society Conference 2023 in Boise, ID and premiered at said conference on March 17th, 2023.

The andante has two repetitive parts in a good way; the second part is longer and going to a broad conclusion. Each part begins quite melodiously from forte to soft piano and continues with broad gestures rhythmically. The music has a lot of broad developments; the music remains harmonious and soft. The loudness often goes from soft to a moderately loud music. Although the beginning of the first part starts with a moderately loud music, at the end it a couple of times suddenly changes from soft piano to a moderately loud music. In contrast, the second part begins with a moderately loud music and immediately changes to soft piano; the same happens in the middle of the second part after which there begins a very good preparation for the concluding notes which are broad. Moreover, although having more soft music, the second part of the andante has also a moderately loud music which prepares for broad concluding notes. That is why, the classical music is melodiously broad as well as soft and sweet. Music composer Gintaras Kavarskas.

Bien allant, mais d'expression tranquilleJacques Leguerney began the composition of his First Sonata for Piano and Violin in 1926, shortly after beginning composition studies with Nadia Boulanger. She was reportedly quite enthusiastic about the natural talent of her new student, and offered to give him private lessons to supplement her analysis classes. Leguerney was already reticent about studying composition. In an interview in 1989, he remembered his feeling at that time, saying that I found that this was useless work. If one is gifted for music, one is capable of writing harmonies. instead, Leguerney showed his Sonata to the French composer Albert Roussel, who was renting an apartment on Avenue Wagram in a building next to that of the Leguerney family. Leguerneyremembered Roussel's apartment with its dark blue walls and gilded Indian statues! Roussel encouraged his efforts and said of the second theme of the first movement: I would have liked to have written that. (J'aurais été très content d'avoir écrit ça.)The first performance of the Sonata was given by the pianist Thérèse Cahen (1897-1944) and the violinist Hortense de Sampigny (? – 1970) in a private concert. The violinist was already a well-known concert artist. De Sampigny finished her studies at the Paris Conservatory in 1915, where she was in the class of Jules Boucherit. In 1918 she married the French author Auguste Bailly (1878-1967). From 1921, she was a member of the Trio Trillat, founded by the pianist Ennemond Trillat with the collaboration of cellist Jean Witkowski. The Trio was active in concerts and recordings in France and abroad for about thirty years. De Sampigny later taught at the Conservatory as assistant to René Benedetti. Thérèse Cahen had studied piano, harmony and counterpoint at the Schola Cantorum, where she obtained a Second Prize. She was a faithful friend and muse for Leguerney, and recruited many musicians for first performances of his vocal and chamber works. She was deported to Auschwitz on July 31, 1944, a few weeks before the Liberation of Paris. This edition of the Sonata was performed at a private concert in Vernon (France) in July 2011 by French violinist Marion Larigaudrie and pianist Mary Dibbern. It is based upon the autograph manuscript OL 23, on deposit at the Music Department of the Bibliothèque national in Paris.
