Schott Music - Digital #Q24049. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q24049). Karol Szymanowski (1882–1932) is regarded as one of the most important Polish composers since Chopin. He received his formative musical training in Warsaw where he lived for many years and was also director of the Conservatoire and Music Academy. His compositional oeuvre comprises a large variety of styles: Szymanowski first leaned towards Chopin and Scriabin, then studied Richard Strauss and Igor Stravinsky, finally finding a style in which he combined impressionist and expressionist, partly even atonal moments. His 'Mythes' for violin and piano from 1915 fell in a transitional period: in the period of turning away from late German Romanticism. They are expressive miniatures full of tonal refinement and impressionist charm and, thanks to their accessible virtuosity, perfect effective performance pieces.

Program Note.Ellygie was written in memory of my neighbour in Delft, where I lived for 3 years in the early 2000s. Elly was a woman who combined great strength with grace, warmth and tenderness. She showed a deep and unswerving love for those dear to her, indeed at great cost to herself. Elly sang in a local choir; in addition, she was a rare artistic talent who never complained that her opportunities for self expression were constrained by personal circumstances. Rather, she grasped whatever chances came her way with gusto.The main melody is an adaptation, in the minor, of Au Clair de la Lune. The middle section (marked 'giocoso') has a piano part based on a musical rendering of her daughters' names. One can hear the two little girls laughing and playing while their calm mother Elly (violin) reigns.Elly died at the age of 65 in February 2013.

English • German.Hungarian composer and violinist Jenö Hubay, born Eugen Huber, received his musical training in Budapest and made his concert début with Viotti’s Violin Concerto No. 22 in A minor. He spent three years in Berlin, where he studied violin with Joseph Joachim. After his return he met Franz Liszt, who recommended that he travel to Paris. In that city he was a welcome guest at musical salons; he also formed a friendship with Henri Vieuxtemps. Hubay taught groups of violin students first in Brussels, then for a long time in Budapest. For twenty-five years he toured Europe as a virtuoso violinist, settling in Switzerland for a while before returning to Budapest for the rest of his life. His chamber compositions include a series of little pieces very probably written for his own use at musical salons, along with character pieces reminiscent of his Hungarian homeland and exotic pieces such as Plaintes arabes (Arabian Lament), an expressive and mournful lament on the violin. Plate no. 23388, published in 1882.
