I chose places and themes that were compelling for me for a variety of reasons. The first movement, Wupatki, is based on the feeling of expanse and solitude I experience when I am visiting this ancient pueblo and the stunning vistas of the Painted Desert. The Song of Friendship, a charming and simple tune was introduced to me by Gary Gorman, a Native American student of mine in the early 1990’s. I fashioned a simple arrangement and composed some original tunes to accompany it. This movement is dedicated to my colleague, clarinetist Michael Sullivan, who was dying from a rare form of cancer during the days I was finishing this movement. The day I finished the piece, I realized that it needed to end as if it never had a chance to finish, much like Michael’s life that was so tragically cut short. Quite by chance, the music ends at bar 43-the exact number of years of Michael’s brief life. Wind, title of the third movement, was composed to give musical interpretation to this element of relentless fury we experience during several months out of the year in this region. It springs up then dies down, only to resurface with more force and resilience.

Transcription of the Neo-romantic song cycle Thoughts and Images (2012), on poems by the Romanian late-Romantic poet Mihai Eminescu. Generally contemplative, but with humorous or tragic touches, it needs simplicity and reserved emotions in performance, also to let the color chords make an impression. The movements correspond to the following songs: 1. the satirical The Album; 2. the nostalgic Years Have Trailed Past; 3. the contemplative, almost minimalist Stars In the Sky; 4. the hectic I Watch the City - What A Hive; 5. the philosophical Ode (in ancient meter); 6. the appeased Vainly In the Dust of Schooling. In 2022 I was commissioned to write a piece which would accompany a proposal submitted to the College Music Society conference in Boise, ID. Part of the proposal suggested music that celebrated the rich musical heritage of the Northwest. In looking around at what that meant, I discovered a curious fact about Boise: it has the only Basque heritage museum in the country. Suddenly the wheels got to turning! Basquing (2022) seeks to invoke... bask, if one will, in the sounds and feelings of another time and place. The inspiration of the piece comes from the Basque region of France with quotations from folksong, fiddle music, and a general vibe of French impressionism. The piece opens with the folksong Atzo Goizean, the lyrics to which invoke the folksy elements of village living (talking about waking to the thrush’s song, fathers arranging marriages, etc.). The urge to ‘word paint’ the folk song with it references to thrushes and partridges, is tempting, but the urge was avoided in this case, instead opting for a general “vibeâ€, or feeling. The next section avoids quotation altogether, instead opting to steep into the mystique environment created before. The last major portion of the piece utilizes what was billed (to me at least) as a Basque fiddle tune (the title lost as it seems the scholarly research on the subject and tunes that comprise the genre are lacking even by those who claim to have some knowledge of it). Assuming the best, however, the fiddle tune quoted in Basquing is meant to be a musical representation of familial resemblance to the fiddle music of the Pacific Northwest and how folk music of all varieties is at one time so specific yet at the same time broad in its understanding across cultures. Commissioned in 2022 by Arthur Houle (pianist) and Joung Hoon Song (violinist) for the Pacific Northwest College Music Society Conference 2023 in Boise, ID and premiered at said conference on March 17th, 2023.

He graduated in Ljubljana and studied music in Prague, Vienna (Joseph Marx), Paris (Schola cantorum) and Basel (Felix Weingartner).He spent many years teaching composition at the Ljubljana Academy of Music, teaching composers such as Nada Ludvig-PeÄar, Zvonimir CigliÄ and Janez MatiÄiÄ whilst serving as a chancellor for a period and was a pianist, conductor, music writer, and director of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra based in the country's capital.His style reflected late romanticism with qualities of expressionism and impressionism in his pieces, often with a hyperbolic artistic temperament, juxtaposing the dark against melodic phrases in his music.Å kerjanc was liberal in his attitude to music and multifaceted in his works. Whilst musically diverse, his opus centred on composition, varying from piano miniatures and solos for beginners, and solo and chamber works to full blown concertos and symphonies. Apart from sonatas, he notably composed a cycle of seven nocturnes, which many consider his greatest piano oriented work, and seven orchestral pieces Gazele (Ghazels). He not only composed for the piano but also the violin, the clarinet and the bassoon in 1952. During his life he also wrote for international composers and composed the film scores for a number of films under Yugoslavia.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844535). In 1849 Robert Schumann completed a set of Romantic character pieces for piano which he named Forest Scenes. One of that set was called Pleasant Landscape, which I have freely arranged for accompanied Instrumental Solo. I have slowed it down considerably from the original and marked it with passionate energy. The beauty and interest is created by the shaping and phrasing of this beautiful melodic line. It has a rubato feeling throughout with constant tempo changes like rall, molto rall, freely, accel, etc. In keeping with the characteristics of the Romantic period my arrangement is full of interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. The equally beautiful piano part provides great interplay of expressive harmony and countermelody. A beautiful piece to show your expressive musicianship and impress them in either concert or audition.
