I underscored with the carol lyrics and guitar chords so that it can be played at home during the holidays at family gatherings and at their churches. At the request of a mom, I created a second violin part so she could play with her daughter. The viola and cello arrangements will be available shortly in time for the holidays! This piece also works year round as Greensleeves. I also created a Youtube accompaniment video so the kids can play this at home during the holidays. There is also a practice video for violins on my Youtube channel!

It was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is the 10th movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. It was written during Bach's first year in Leipzig, Germany. Bach did not compose the melody. That was written by Johann Schop. Bach only harmonized and orchestrated Schop's melody. A transcription of Jesu was done by English pianist Myra Hess (1890-1965), and was published in 1926 for solo piano.In 1934, Hess' version was adapted for piano duet. British organist Peter Hurford made a transcription of Jesu for organ. Today, Bach's piece is often performed at weddings and funerals. Bach wrote the piece for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings and continuo. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is one of Bach's most enduring pieces of music.The present version is a facilitated reduction of the theme where it is soloed by Violin, along with piano accompaniment with chords that can be performed by the teacher and the ends. Published by David McKeown (A0.587600). The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. This full version is arranged as a Solo for Violin and Piano; the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The single pdf file contains both the score and the solo instrumental part. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both the solo and accompaniment enjoying melodic interest. This is a setting of two old hymn tunes, Retreat and Rockingham, originally arranged as a choral anthem with violin obbligato but here rearranged as a violin solo with piano. It is suitable as prelude or offertory music. The first tune, Retreat, is most commonly found in American hymnbooks for the hymn From Every Stormy Wind that Blows, hence the title, but in the United Kingdom mostly Communion hymns are sung to these melodies. Rockingham is often used as the tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. If the title is to be printed in a church bulletin I recommend using whichever hymn is most familiar in the context as the title! The recording begins at the end of the introduction, in measure 8 - it was done at a youth camp as Chapel Prelude so there is some background noise. The recording is done with synthetic instruments, as there was no violinist available, and sounds a little forced, but with a real player performing the composition and expressing the melody, the piece acquires a magnificent color and tone.

Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. When Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.This version is arranged for Solo Violin and Piano and the performance time is around three and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and interchangeable. Repeats may also be ignored. Both the full length youtube performance and the short audio sample are from the Clarinet version off this arrangement.The solo part is intermediate level, while the piano accompaniment suits an advanced intermediate player. Downton Abbey was a much loved TV series that ran for six seasons capturing the hearts of many across the world. The composer of the music, John Lunn, won two Primetime Emmys for the hauntingly beautiful score. I have arranged this wonderful piece for violin and piano, as well as for cello and piano, and string quartet/string orchestra. The 30 sec clip is done on Sibelius software as I have not yet been able to record this piece live, but if you search my Youtube Channel, Skinny Black Dogs, Capriccio Quartet, you can see and hear the live version. The harmony and structure is exactly the same.
The piece is suitable for a young violist and could make use of open strings, though more experienced players will be able to play in different positions with longer bows and vibrato. At Bars 11-13 the violinist will need to change the bow discreetly when it runs out. This was great fun to arrange so I hope you enjoy playing it!
