Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.969444). The score for Dale Dykins' Sonata in A Minor was found in a closet after his death in 2009. From the markings on the score, it appears that the Sonata was performed with Dykins at the piano, probably in July 1951. It is believed that the Sonata had not been performed in more than 50 years. The first movement of the Sonata was the subject of the 2013 Burke & Bagley Prize. Violinist Leonid Zhelezny and pianist Andrey Iliushkin won the Prize with this outstanding video:.

Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including four sonatas for violin and fortepiano; a fifth sonata, in D minor, was written in 1777 expressly for violin and clavicembalo, representing a different sort of piece than the more common duo sonata. The date of the C major sonata, the earlier of two works in this key, is not known, although it was probably written during Kraus's first years in Stockholm; stylistic evidence strongly suggests that it, and its companion piece, the Sonata in D major (VB 159), date from the later part of that period 1780-1782. Kraus was a proficient performer on both instruments and his sonatas, which display all his usual musical ingenuity and technical finish, are highly attractive works.Allan Badley.

Beginning with an expressive violin theme in a densely packed, 'Brahms-like' piano setting, the classical four-movement work centres around two capricious and playful movements: Lustig, nicht zu schnell is how the second movement begins, a fugal gem working with all kinds of contrapuntal tricks. This is followed by a scherzo-like, wittily flirting Rasch. The finale begins with a melodically simple tune in an almost folksong-like tone which, by a sequence of character variations, builds to a grand gesture which eventually leads back to the initial cantabile – with the sonata coming to a quiet end. This arrangement adapted for violin and piano was designed to make its listeners weep with emotion, because the adaptation preserves the original essence of the work, keeping its integrity faithful to what Beethoven wanted to transmit, with only a slight change in tone and addition of harmonic resources in the structure of the arrangement. Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice.Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).
