Piano,Violin - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548506 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3387409. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548506). The First Noel arranged for Violin & Piano with new harmony for the final verse. Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Violin Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. Stainer Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships. Diatonic Function The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends. Political Context The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era. Eminent composers in the nineteenth century began to revise and adapt them. Consequently, they revived the English carol.

Violin and piano - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q3900 Composed by Robert Schumann. Arranged by Emil Kross and Fritz Meyer. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Copyright 2009 Schott Music GmbH & Co. KG, Mainz. Downloadable. Op. 124/16. Schott Music - Digital #Q3900. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q3900). He gave a present to me and my little Marie of a delightful lullaby composed that Christmas afternoon, Clara Schumann noted in the family diary they shared. This Slumer Song of 1841 Robert Schumann later included as No. 16 in his collection of Albumblätter (Album Leaves) Op. 124. The collection of twenty miniatures for piano was written over a fairly long period of time: the first piedes were written in 1832/33 and the composer started work on the last piece, the Canon, in 1845. In 1853 Schumann had the idea of brining together barious individual pieces that didn't fit in anywhere else in a collection of Albumblätter that was published in December of the same year. It is a bright bouquet of poetic little piano pieces of moderate technical difficulty: there can be no comparsion with grand works such as his G minor piano sonata of Carnaval. These musical aphorisms were not intended for the concert hall, though, but for domestic music making: this is chamber music in the true sense of the term. After unpleasant wrangling that even involved going to court to obtain permission to marry Clara Wieck, there followed a time of intense productivity for Robert Schumann: 1840 was his year of songs and 1841 his year of symphonies. Their marriage, which eventually took place against the wishes of Schumann's father-in-law, and the birth of their first child on 1 September 1841 contributed much to his personal happiness. It was for Marie that the hyppy father now composed this Slumber Song, which has enjoyed great popularity ever since: a simple and tender lullaby, written by the father as a surprise ´gift. This lullgy lends itself very well to being performed on a melodic instrument with piano accompaniment, as in thes edition for violin.

Grieg: Ase's Death from Peer Gynt Suite for Violin & Piano

Piano,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549527 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contemporary,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3505751. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549527). Duration: ca. 3:40, Score: 5 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Super-famous instantly recognizable tune, not very difficult - suitable for a recital, funeral or church meditation. Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.Register for free lifetime revisions and updates at www.jamesguthrie.com

Song Of The Liberty Bell (violin solo part – violin and piano) MO130BViolin Solo Part (score available)Music by Mark O’Connor3 pages - 5:00 minutes in length Song Of The Liberty Bell adapted for violin and piano was composed by Mark O’Connor and used as the theme song for the critically acclaimed PBS documentary, Liberty! The American Revolution. O’Connor wrote the piece to include three different instrument groupings - unaccompanied solo, folk ensemble, and string orchestra. The Sony Classical album Liberty! features Song Of The Liberty Bell in all three arrangements. O’Connor later adapted his piece for violin and piano. Album notes author Thomas Fleming calls the music profoundly moving with exquisite melody. Fleming further describes the orchestral version - O’Connor joins in, and the instruments of the symphony pick up the theme. It is a musical replication of the way the voices of liberty in 1776 began with a lonely defiant few - and then swelled to a tremendous national chorus that has resounded through the world for the next two hundred and thirty-three years. The music is suited for all levels. Piano,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.587635 Composed by Various. Arranged by David McKeown. Baroque,Concert,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. 24 pages. David McKeown #4594713. Published by David McKeown (A0.587635). The Wedding Album is a collection of four beautiful and timeless wedding favourites, arranged for Solo Violin with Piano accompaniment. Whether for that Special Day, for a recital, or for your own entertainment, these arrangements are ideal for players at an intermediate level or higher. The 24-page file includes the piano accompaniments and the separate solo parts at the end. Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy. The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since. The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. When Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since. These four arrangements are also available as single titles for $3.99 each. Piano,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549485 Composed by Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. 20 pages. Jmsgu3 #3500555. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549485). VIOLIN & PIANO - Score: 11 pages, solo part: 3 pages, piano part: 5 pages. Duration: 4:20. This is a popular recital piece that would work well also in church or school programs. Mendelssohn Background Felix Mendelssohn (1809 –1847) was, by all means, a German mastermind composer, musician, and orchestra conductor of the Romantic period. Consequently, Mendelssohn composed in the usual forms of the time - symphonies, concertos, oratorios, piano music, and chamber music. To summarize, his most famous works include his music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, The Hebrides Overture, his later Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, and his Octet for Strings. His most well-known piano pieces, by and large, are the Songs Without Words. Artistic Standing  Musical tastes change from time to time. Moreover, just such a change occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This plus rampant antisemitism brought a corresponding amount of undue criticism. Fortunately, however, his artistic inventiveness has indeed been critically re-evaluated. As a result, Mendelssohn is once again among the most prevalent composers of the Romantic era. Early Family Life Mendelssohn was, in fact, born into a prominent Jewish family. His grandfather was, notably, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. Felix was, in fact, raised without religion. At the age of seven, he was suddenly baptized as a Reformed Christian. He was, moreover, a child musical prodigy. Nevertheless, his parents did not attempt to exploit his talent. Early Adulthood Mendelssohn was, in general, successful in Germany. He conducted, in particular, a revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, specifically with his presentation of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. Felix was truly in demand throughout Europe as a composer, conductor, and soloist. For example, he visited Britain ten times. There, he premiered, namely, many of his significant works. His taste in music was. To be sure, inventive and well-crafted yet markedly conservative. This conservatism separated him by all means from more audacious musical colleagues like Liszt, Wagner, and Berlioz. Mendelssohn founded the Leipzig Conservatoire which, to clarify, became a defender of this conservative viewpoint. Mature Adulthood Schumann notably wrote that Mendelssohn was the Mozart of the nineteenth century, the most brilliant musician, the one who most clearly sees through the contradictions of the age and for the first time reconciles them. This observation points to a couple of features in particular that illustrate Mendelssohn's works and his artistic procedure. Musical Features In the first place, his musical style was fixed in his systematic mastery of the style of preceding masters. This being said, he certainly recognized and even developed early romanticism from the music of Beethoven and Weber. Secondly, it indicates that Mendelssohn sought to strengthen his inherited musical legacy rather than to exchange it with new forms and styles or replace it with exotic orchestration. Consequently, he diverged his contemporaries in the romantic period, such as Wagner, Berlioz, and Liszt. Mendelssohn revered Liszt's virtuosity at the keyboard but found his music rather insubstantial.

Piano,Violin - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1494274 Composed by Thomas Moore. Arranged by Alex Nunes Rodrigues. Folk. 3 pages. Alex Rodrigues #1070878. Published by Alex Rodrigues (A0.1494274). The Last Rose of Summer is a work deeply rooted in Irish culture, originally penned as a poem by the renowned poet and composer Thomas Moore in 1805. Moore, regarded as Ireland’s national poet, was inspired by an 'Old Blush' rose while staying at Jenkinstown Castle in County Kilkenny, Ireland. The poem was published as part of his Irish Melodies collection between 1807 and 1834 and later set to music by fellow Irishman John Stevenson. The song gained widespread popularity and was incorporated into the opera Martha by the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, which premiered in 1847 in Vienna. This sheet music has been adapted for solo instrument, preserving the original melody by Moore and Stevenson in its essence. The simplicity of the arrangement allows the musician to highlight the purity of the melody, making it easier to perform while maintaining the piece's emotional character. This version is designed to be accessible for beginner to intermediate musicians, enabling an authentic interpretation that respects the traditional nuances of the work. The Last Rose of Summer captures the essence of melancholy and the passage of time—universal themes reflected in the farewell to the last vestige of a vibrant summer. The melody, paired with Moore’s poetry, evokes a profound sense of loss and longing, with the solitary rose serving as a metaphor for the fleeting nature of life and the seasons. The simplicity and beauty of this piece have made it a classic, perpetuating Irish tradition and touching the hearts of listeners worldwide.

Violin and piano - easy to intermediate - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q19835 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Op. 30/3. Schott Music - Digital #Q19835. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19835). 'Songs Without Words' – that's what Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809–1847) called his lyrical piano pieces, romantic miniatures in which the composer wanted to 'sing' on the keyboard instrument. With them, he invented an entirely new form of chamber music playing in the 19th century. These 'Songs' are also perfectly suitable for duet playing: for a melodic instrument with piano accompaniment. The 'Song Without Words' Op 30/3 is a rewarding lyrical solo piece.

Piano,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.948808 Composed by Serghei Rachmaninov. Arranged by Adrian F. Pipas. 20th Century. 7 pages. Adrian F. Pipas #6642575. Published by Adrian F. Pipas (A0.948808). ЗдеÑÑŒ хорошо (Zdes' khorosho, How nice is here) was written in April 1902, in a sweet moment in the composer's life: he had overcome a creative block and had just married his cousin Natalia Sarina. Zdes' khorosho is n. 7 from Twelve Romances, op. 21, a beautiful song that talks about the bond between man, nature and God. It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts. In 1963, the Russian composer Vladimir Michailovich Jurowski (father and grandfather of conductors) orchestrated ten songs by Rachmaninov, including Zdes' khorosho, and there is a later orchestration of this song by Michael Rot. You know that I usually find it difficult to renounce the original piano versions, especially when the composer didn't orchestrated them, but I recommend you to listen to Anna Netrebko singing this song with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev. You might wonder why I don't share this version here, there are two reasons: first, I can’t do without that beautiful piano; two, I chose my version months ago (something that lately happens quite often). I said before that Zdes' khorosho is between contemplation and passion; Most of singers enhance the most contemplative perspective, that's the case of the lovely performance by Anna Netrebko. Others sing the most passionate version, like the one we’re listening today. Its tempo is faster than usual, it lasts about a minute and a half; maybe it would surprise you if you're used to slower versions. I hope you enjoy this song as much as me; I think this performance by Nicolai Gedda and Gerald Moore, recorded live in 1966, is wonderful.Source: Liederabend.cathttps://www.liederabend.cat/en/bloc/entrades/400-how-nice-it-is-here

Piano,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549439 Composed by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. 14 pages. Jmsgu3 #3494667. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549439). Score: 9 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 4 pages. Duration: 4:18. Suitable for a recital of church meditation. School Years First of all, Sullivan attended music school at the Royal Academy of Music. Because Sullivan was so talented, the Academy awarded him the Mendelssohn Scholarship for two years in a row. He, therefore, studied with John Goss, who studied with Thomas Atwood, who in turn studied with Mozart. Sullivan similarly studied the piano at the Academy with Arthur O’Leary. Study Abroad During his first year, he also earned money by singing solos in the Chapel Royal. At the end of his second year, the Academy consequently continued his scholarship and sent him to study at the Leipzig Conservatoire. He certainly studied composition, and likewise counterpoint and piano. Hence, during his final year in Leipzig, Sullivan finally completed his graduation composition project: Incidental Music for Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Association with Gilbert It seems like Sullivan built the bulk of his composing career largely in the 1860s. As a result, he became famous for his incidental music for the Tempest and his Irish Symphony. He, therefore, began collaborating with the poet W. S. Gilbert in the 1870s. Rather than focus on serious opera, Gilbert and Sullivan, in contrast, concentrated on comic operas such as H. M. S. Pinafore, the Pirates of Penzance, and the Mikado. Therefore, certainly as a result of his education and experience, Sullivan composed a total of 24 operas, 11 symphonic works, and 10 choral pieces. Even more, he wrote a large number of noteworthy hymns such as Onward Christian Soldiers. Lost Chord The general style of his music is maybe similar to Mendelssohn, Schumann, and perhaps Liszt. It seems like Sullivan was fond of writing distinct melodies for each character in his operettas. His melodies combine together as the characters did. Furthermore, he was a master orchestrator, and therefore played the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone fluently. The Lost Chord Sullivan wrote his most noteworthy song the Lost Chord in 1877. As a result, it was a great success and was certainly performed all over the world by a variety of singers such as Enrico Caruso. Because Sullivan was the most famous composer in England, the Lost Chord became the most famous of all British or American songs of the 1870s and 1890s. Consequently, in 1888 Thomas Edison recorded The Lost Chord for the phonograph. It was one of the first songs ever recorded. Furthermore, Queen Victoria knighted Sullivan in 1883. Â

It was created in 1958, a time when Taiwan not only experienced the tragic 228 Incident but was also enveloped in the high-pressure rule of the Kuomintang's White Terror. The composer hoped to express nostalgia through music, infusing the melody with a strong Taiwanese folk style, and providing hope through the lyrics. Although this song was once banned by the Kuomintang government, it has still been sung by many Taiwanese singers, including famous ones like Chiang Hui, Hong Ronghong, and Feng Feifei. Furthermore, it was selected as one of the performance songs at President Tsai Ing-wen's inauguration ceremony.I have arranged this piece for violin and piano, with a difficulty level equivalent to Grade 5 of the ABRSM.「阮若心ã®æ‰‰ã‚’é–‹ã‘ã‚Œã°ã€ã¨ã„ã†ã“ã®å¤å…¸çš„ãªå°æ¹¾ã®æŒã¯ã€ä½œæ›²å®¶ã®å‘‚泉生ãŒä½œæ›²ã—ã€æ–‡å¦è€…ã®çŽ‹æ˜¶é›„ãŒä½œè©žã—ã€1958å¹´ã«åˆ¶ä½œã•ã‚Œã¾ã—ãŸã€‚当時ã®å°æ¹¾ã¯ã€æ‚²æƒ¨ãª228事件を経験ã—ãŸã°ã‹ã‚Šã§ãªãã€å›½æ°‘å…šã®ç™½è‰²ãƒ†ãƒã®é«˜åœ§æ”¯é…下ã«ã‚ã‚Šã¾ã—ãŸã€‚作曲家ã¯ã€éŸ³æ¥½ã‚’通ã˜ã¦ãƒŽã‚¹ã‚¿ãƒ«ã‚¸ã‚¢ã‚’表ç¾ã—ã€ãƒ¡ãƒãƒ‡ã‚£ã«å°æ¹¾ã®æ°‘謡ã®è¦ç´ ã‚’å–り入れã€æŒè©žã«å¸Œæœ›ã‚’与ãˆãŸã‹ã£ãŸã®ã§ã™ã€‚ã“ã®æ›²ã¯ã‹ã¤ã¦å›½æ°‘党政府ã«ã‚ˆã£ã¦ç¦æ¢ã•ã‚Œã¾ã—ãŸãŒã€ãã‚Œã§ã‚‚多ãã®å°æ¹¾ã®æŒæ‰‹ã«ã‚ˆã£ã¦æŒã‚ã‚Œã¦ãã¾ã—ãŸã€‚江蕙ã€å¤§å°ç™¾åˆã€æ´ªæ¦®å®ã€é³³é£›é£›ãªã©ãŒãã®ä¾‹ã§ã™ã€‚ã•ã‚‰ã«ã€è”¡è‹±æ–‡å¤§çµ±é ˜ã®å°±ä»»å¼ã§ã¯ã€æ¼”å¥æ›²ã¨ã—ã¦é¸ã°ã‚Œã¾ã—ãŸã€‚ç§ã¯ã“ã®æ›²ã‚’ヴァイオリンã¨ãƒ”アノã®ãŸã‚ã«ã‚¢ãƒ¬ãƒ³ã‚¸ã—ã€é›£æ˜“度ã¯è‹±å›½çŽ‹ç«‹éŸ³æ¥½é™¢ã®è©¦é¨“ã®Grade 5ã«ç›¸å½“ã—ã¾ã™ã€‚.

Piano,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549395 Composed by Carl Bohm. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards,Wedding. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3493177. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549395). Duration: ca. 4:00, Score: 7 pages, solo part: 2 page, piano part: 3 pages.A very popular number for weddings, also effective for meditations and recital encores. Carl Bohm Carl Bohm, sometimes spelled with a K as in Karl Bohm, was born in 1844 and died in 1920. Bohm was a German composer, pianist, and songwriter. He was famous for writing songs with a light and optimistic atmosphere. Some of his most famous songs are Calm as the Night, Twilight, May Bells, Enfant Cheri, and The Fountain. In addition to his songs, he was a very popular composer of string quartets and string trios. His music was very popular and profitable. His publisher used some of the profits from sales of Bohm’s work to prepare the works of Johannes Brahms for publication. Output He certainly was prolific, not only with individual compositions but collections and albums of original music, such as the Bohm Album for the Pianoforte. The quality of his melodies is remarkable. They have a familiar quality similar to folk-songs. It’s no wonder they have become so popular.  His greatest masterpiece may well be the famous Calm as the Night as it is so well finished and refined. This song comes to us from a collection known simply as Lieder Op. 326. Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht) is listed as Number 27 in the collection. The song is scored for vocal duet and piano. The lyrics for Bohm’s Still wie die Nacht are anonymous. English: As quiet as the night And deep as the sea, Your love should be! If you love me The same as I love you, I want to be yours. As hot as steel And as firm as a rock, Your love should be!
