The Edmund Fitzgerald - Concerto for Piano and Strings

String Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.942953 Composed by Geoffrey Peterson. Contemporary. Score and parts. 43 pages. Geoffrey Peterson #4267231. Published by Geoffrey Peterson (A0.942953). Link to complete recording: https://soundcloud.com/geoffrey-peterson/sets/the-edmund-fitzgerald-concerto On November 9th, 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. In addition, a chime is rung 29 times during the final bars of the concerto to memorialize the men who lost their lives. The Crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald: Michael E. Armagost, Frederick J. Beetcher, Thomas D. Bentsen, Edward F. Bindon, Thomas D. Borgeson, Oliver J. Champeau, Nolan S. Church, Ransom E. Cundy, Thomas E. Edwards, Russell G. Haskell, George J. Holl, Bruce L. Circles - Concerto for Cello & (H.S.) String Orchestra

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.878900 Composed by Eric Moore. Contemporary,Instructional,Standards. Score and parts. 83 pages. Cello Loft #3420919. Published by Cello Loft (A0.878900). Written for an advanced high school cellist to play with his/her own school orchestra. This is a great way to feature a fantastic cellist while introducing the whole orchestra (and audience) to some accessible trends in contemporary music. The orchestra students were *very* excited and engaged with this piece, and the audience absolutely loved it.Compositional goals included:Accessible introduction to contemporary music.Fun and engaging parts for each section of the orchestraHighlight both cellist and orchestra with parts that sound difficult but are relatively simple.Clear-cut form and motivic material as a starting point for discussion of composition.Circles is 11:00 long, in 4 movements with no breaks.Mvt I. Circles begins high-energy and includes sweeping arpeggio figures and measured tremolo oscillations. The energy dissipates and a simple lyrical theme emerges, battling complications as they arise in the orchestra.Mvt II. Passacaglia is built over an exotic vamp and includes jete (to imitate castanets), col legno, snap pizz and instrument slaps. Mvt III. Lament begins with the soloist doing slow pizzicato arpeggiations while the orchestra bows weeping chords. Eventually, everyone is pizzicato, echoing and transforming the solo line. A cello cadenza recalls material from the Passacaglia. The soloist introduces triple-stop string crossings that lead into the fourth movement.Mvt IV. Coda is fast, with the triple stops in the solo part as a moto perpetuo, while the string sections come in one-by-one underneath. By the end, everyone is bowing and we circle back to the opening material of the 1st movement. The Soloist should be fluent through 3 octaves.Orchestra parts are easier and generally require fluency through 4th position. Written in 2011-12 and premiered by Eric with the Mountain View High School (Loveland, CO), Peter Toews conducting. Recording is of that premier. Eric can provide a MIDI if desired.Eric is happy to work with the orchestra and/or soloist via Skype (or a similar arrangement).

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.OMF131). 9 x 12 in inches.COMPOSER'S NOTESWhile doing a 'straight' arrangement of the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, a rather strange thought popped into my head: What might Ludwig write today if he suddenly decided to 'whoop it up' (maybe after a little too much Bavarian Brew!)? Et Voila, Beethoven Goes Bananas!

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1094340 Composed by Juan Guerra González. Classical. 76 pages. Juan Carlos Guerra Gonzalez #698428. Published by Juan Carlos Guerra Gonzalez (A0.1094340). Tapayawi - Concerto for Piano and Strings Orchestra in 3 movements. Estimated performance time: 19'45 Tapayawi†comes from Nahuatl and means “rain constantly.†Each one of the movements portrays a scene with rain in different environments. The work has 3 short movements and is dedicated to Dr. Esteban Barquero, a conductor and dear friend from Costa Rica. The first movement “Bajo la lluvia†(Under the Rain) represents the juvenile experience of doing different activities under the rain like playing, running, and dancing. I have memorable memories of my childhood under the intense rain. The experience of being in the rain can be funny or stressful depending on your perspective. The music pretends to be ambiguous, presenting the theme in different tonal centers and moving between different intensities until fading in the rain. “Rocio†(Dew) is the second movement of the piece. The slow music pretends to evoke a relaxing morning in the countryside enjoying the view of the dew on the green plains. The delicacy of the piano in combination with the warmth of the strings will help to create a relaxing experience for the listener. This movement is like an oasis to the noise of our daily lives. The third movement “Tempestad†(Tempest) is based on a Salvadoran Traditional Rhythm called “Xuc†As an interesting fact, while I was composing this movement I learned that Costa Rica had a traditional rhythm that is very similar called “Tambito.†The movement is full of energy, portraying a Thunderstorm. This movement is very demanding for the performers, especially for the soloist. Tapayawi received it's world premiere on August 12th, 2022 Teatro de Bellas Artes, Universidad de Costa Rica Rebeca Ordóñez, piano Esteban Barquero, conductor Orchestra of the Encuentro de Pianistas Costa Rica 2022 Parts are available for sale and rental, please visit http://www.juancarlosguerra.com/tapayawi for more information.

String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1155289 By Traditional Sea Chantey's. By Traditional. Arranged by Bob Mathews. Historic,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Score and Parts. 23 pages. Bob Mathews #755581. Published by Bob Mathews (A0.1155289). Sea chantey’s sometimes spelled shantey’s were songs that were played or sung aboard ships so men could work together doing the everyday tasks such as raising and lowering sails raising and lowering anchors, loading or unloading cargo. Ships had a “shanteyman†whose job it was to lead the men in song. There were often specific songs for each task. These wonderful melodies have found their way into the realm of folk songs today.
