The work is in three movements. The first movement, “Introduction and Allegro†begins with an introductory passage which leads to an extended cadenza. The allegro uses a contrasting set of two themes, one of which is syncopated and dancelike, the other which is lyrical and expressive. The Aria which follows is in an ABA lied form with extended passage work for the soloist at the return of the theme. The Rondo-finale is a rollicking scherzo which is presented in a variety of forms, first in the saxophone and then in the violins, after several developmental passages and a final cadenza, returns to end the work with a final flourish. A reduction for alto saxophone is avaialble as a different item. The orchestral parts are available on rentel from the publisher.

While the Twelve Days of Christmas has long been a Christmas holiday favorite, you’ve never heard it played like this before. Here is an opportunity for the musical AND comedic talents of one of your most advanced players to be featured! The soloist plays the role of an accomplished, yet most pretentious and self-aggrandizing soloist. The accompanying orchestra parts are not difficult, although a more advanced orchestra will be able to make even more of the light-hearted and occasionally dramatic accompaniment. A two-page outline of suggestions are also provided to help enhance the comedy, but you are invited to put your own comedic stamp on the performance. Early in the work, the soloist has a few very simple solo passages which he or she deftly and smugly executes flawlessly. As the music proceeds, the soloist is highlighted with several showy, but brief, cadenzas. The mood then changes and becomes melodramatic and sorrowful, perhaps requiring a stagehand to produce a handkerchief and dry the tears of the soloist (and perhaps the conductor). Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra).
