How is it that one can be born a slave in French colonial Guadeloupe and rise to be among Paris’ musical giants, to become a colonel in the French Army as well as the frequent dinner guest of princes and potentates? The story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is surely an interesting one, even the stuff of which movies are made.Joseph Bologne’s father, Georges Bologne de Saint-Georges was a French planter. Saint-Georges was the name of his plantation. He impregnated Anne, the Senegalese slave of his wife, who bore him a son in 1745. Uncharacteristic of many of these sort of relationships he acknowledged the child was his and gave him his family name. When he was seven Bologne’s father took him to Paris for his education, enrolling him in a boarding school. Two years later he and the child’s mother returned to France and set up housekeeping as a family in Paris’ Saint-Germain-des-Prés district.At age thirteen Joseph’s father enrolled him in the Royal Technical Academy of Fencing and Swordsmanship. He quickly became the finest swordsman in the academy, perhaps in all of Paris. Upon graduation he was made an Officer of the King’s Bodyguard and a chevalier (an honorary knighthood). He went on to serve tours of duty in the French Army during the Seven Years War (1756-1763) and later after the French Revolution, where he was Colonel and commander of an all-Black regiment of the Revolutionary Army. All this in spite of the fact that French law forbade him, a man of African heritage, to become a citizen, to retain his father’s royal title of “Gentleman of the King’s Chamber,†or to marry outside his class.There is limited information about Bologne’s musical training, but he was obviously so well-skilled that Italian violinist-composer Antonio Lolli (1725-1802) wrote two violin concertos for him and French composer François-Joseph Gossec (1734-1829) dedicated his set of String Trios, Op. 9 to Bologne. Lolli may have worked with him on violin technique and Gossec composition, but this may be apocryphal. Bologne played in Gossec’s orchestra, and was later both leader and conductor of the group.As a composer Joseph Bologne was quite prolific, composing six operas, fourteen violin concertos, four symphonies concertantes, and numerous chamber works and songs. His Six String Quartets, Op. 1, Nos. 1-6 date from 1770-1771 and were published by the Paris publishing house of Jean-Georges Sieber (1738-1822) in 1773 (There are a total of 18 quartets: Six Quartets “au goût du jour†[up-to-date] from 1779 and the Opus 14 set of six which date from 1785). Dorian can also be a name for a person. In this composition, I have imagined Dorian to be the protagonist on a hero’s journey. The music creates a narrative of our main character Dorian growing up, going on a grand adventure, and finally returning home, enriched by so many experiences.

Bach drew an impressive picture of the inner turmoil of the eldest Bach son's personality, it is rather unproductive for the understanding of his music. However, legends often or mostly contain a core of truth: There is no doubt that the highly gifted musician failed because of the overwhelming example of his father (as composer) particularly since he was on the threshold from one epoch to another. In the adagio, both flute parts rising above the string orchestra are assigned a quality of expression that can already be related to the sentimental age whereas the second movement, a more or less strict string fugue, is rooted in the tradition-conscious baroque period.

Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746694). Arrangement of That's a Plenty for String Orchestra. That’s a Plenty arranged for String Orchestra, is a 1914 ragtime piano piece composed by Lew Pollack. Lyrics by Ray Gilbert (born 1912) were added decades later. A number of popular vocal versions have been recorded, but the tune remains more performed as an instrumental. The composition started out as a rag, but is nowadays played as a part of the Dixieland jazz repertoire. The song has been recorded by numerous artists, and it is considered a jazz standard. The first recording was in 1917 by Prince’s Band, and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings recorded their rendition in 1923.Television comedian Jackie Gleason used it in his shows in the 1950s and 1960s. Among the hundreds of later recordings of this standard, particularly notable versions include: Freddy Martin and His Orchestra recorded a version of That’s A Plenty in 1950. Sheet music from the 1950 version featuring Freddy Martin on the cover has the lyrics printed inside. It was recorded by Albert Nicholas, clarinet, with The Big Chief Jazz Band in Oslo on August 29, 1955. Released on the 78 rpm record Philips P 53038. The Pollack and Gilbert song is not to be confused with a 1909 song of the same name by Henry Creamer and Bert Williams. Debussy criticised Satie's music for lack of form--there is a story that Satie showed these pieces to Debussy who asked, ‘Why such a title?’ He replied Because you cannot criticize my Three Pieces in the shape of a Pear. If they are in the form of a pear they cannot be shapeless. Poire had the slang meanings of fool and spinning top--Satie is famous for playing the fool --he said Take my ... Morceaux en Forme d’une Poire... it is evident that musical ideas played no part whatsoever in their composition. First performed by Anita Aslin with Hessle Sinfonia, Alan Edgar conducting.

Published by John T Sarno (A0.904424). This is a fun piece for an intermediate-level string orchestra. It is the third arrangement of mine that is a mash-up of traditional Christmas carols. This arrangement features religious Christmas carols. Included are: Angles We Have Heard on High; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen; O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; Away in a Manger; Cradle Song (Away in a Manger); Joy to the World; In the Bleak Midwinter. In different places in the piece, different string sections play different melodies at the same time. There is a triangle part to be played as a fun part. There is a Flute solo, but it can be played on any C instrument. More instructions are given at the end of the score for how these parts should be played. While it is mostly a pizzicato piece there are some bowing sections. It also gives the player a challenge to play pizzicato while holding the bow in certain sections. This is a great piece for your Christmas/Winter Concert. Approximately 6:30 John Sarno
