He was educated as a chorister of the Chapel Royal in London and later became a Doctor of Music at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Bull was one of the most famous composers of keyboard music of the early 17th century, and most of his compositions were written for the virginal, a keyboard instrument popular in the Renaissance period. He was known for his outstanding technical ability and keyboard virtuosity, and his music is distinguished by unfailing resourcefulness in devising new musical ideas. Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces published in Musica Britannica. He was also one of the contributors to Parthenia, a collection of keyboard music published in 1611. Bull wrote an anthem, God the Father, God the Son, for the 1613 wedding of the princess and the Elector Palatine, in addition to his keyboard compositions, verse anthems, canons, and other works. Bull's music ranked among the foremost composers along with Byrd, Gibbons, and Tomkins.John Bull had several contemporaries who were also prominent composers during the Renaissance period. I have always found music in the Dorian mode to be very pleasing, even before I knew what it was; it has uniquely attractive qualities and shows up in diverse music traditions from all around the world. Dorian can also be a name for a person. In this composition, I have imagined Dorian to be the protagonist on a hero’s journey. The music creates a narrative of our main character Dorian growing up, going on a grand adventure, and finally returning home, enriched by so many experiences.

This arrangement is different than most in that it is constructed to be as flexible as possible. With the exception of a short intro and ending coda, there are four 20-measure sections. Sections 1 and 4 are like most other arrangements; the well-known melody over a pulsating quarter note accompaniment. Sections 2 and 3 differ in that each instrument has measures of rest to save their chops. Sections 2 and 3 are also musically different; while following the same chord progression, they incorporate the main melody in different ways: segmented, inverted, reversed, inverted AND reversed… These sections are written to by stylistically correct with the original, but musically more interesting and rewarding for the performers.

The concept of all Pick 'n' Mix Strings arrangements is that you just choose the parts which are most suited to your players. We are absolutely NOT suggesting that you try to cover every single possible part! If you don't have any players on the more advanced parts, this doesn't matter at all. Alternatively, experienced ensembles might want all players on advanced parts. You may well use a mixture of some advanced parts and other simpler parts- or you could even have a very early beginner ensemble just using the parts for open strings and first fingers, with a teacher playing the main tune on piano for instance. In addition to the regular score and parts, there are also optional versions of each part with the: STRING FINGERING written in; LETTER NAMES written in; an EXTENSION SCORE; a REDUCED SCORE; an optional PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT and an optional PIANO REDUCTION. There are tried and tested suggested BOWINGS included in all string parts. However, should any music directors wish to use alternative bowings to those printed, we can happily provide versions of the score and parts without bowing on request. There are also Play Along videos available on YouTube @PicknMixStrings for all the Open String parts, in case these are helpful for practising along with!

A brand new setting of this carol for wind quintet (Fl/Ob/Cl/Hn/Bssn).After a short introduction, we hear a fairly normal rendition of the tune with standard harmony. The second verse has the addition of fanfare-like motifs in the top two parts which add some sparkle to the tune. The intention is merely to heighten the feeling of 'announcement' which we get from the words. The melody is also much more decorated and placed into the middle of the ensemble.From Letter C there is an interlude of fanfares before the final verse at the grandioso. This is the loudest part of the setting and needs to sound warm, full and rich.This setting is intended to be played by any ensemble. I have kept the range used reasonable and it does not require any special techniques.

This beautiful hymn was first published by John Francis Wade in his collection Cantus Diversi (1751), with four Latin verses, and music set in the traditional square notation used for medieval liturgical music. Besides John Francis Wade, the tune has been attributed to several musicians, from John Reading and his son, to Handel, and even the German composer Gluck. The Portuguese composer Marcos Portugal or King John IV of Portugal have also been credited. Thomas Arne, whom Wade knew, is another possible composer.
