We Three Kings, also known as We Three Kings of Orient Are or The Quest of the Magi, is a Christmas carol that was written by John Henry Hopkins, Jr. in 1857. At the time of composing the carol, Hopkins served as the rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and he wrote the carol for a Christmas pageant in New York City. Many versions of this song have been composed and it remains a popular Christmas carol. This intermediate level arrangement can be used for string quartet or string orchestra. The opera-ballet consists of a prologue and three entries. It was performed for the first time at the Royal Academy of Music on June 17, 1710, in the Salle du Palais-Royal. According to the usage of the time, the work is described as ballet, but it is one of the most important examples of a new genre that specialists will later agree to call opera-ballet. . The chaconne is a popular dance song, in three beats of lively character, originating in America, during the Vice-Kingdom of New Spain and brought to Spain by sailors. Transplanted then in other European countries at the beginning of the XVIIth century, it becomes a dance of noble character there then is approached by the instruments, in orchestra or soloists. It is then a piece of large proportions, in triple time, slow and solemn, based on the repetition and variation of a theme.

Duration: ca. 29:28 Mozart's Sonata in D major, K. 284, also known as the Durnitz Sonata, is a solo piano piece composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1775. It is one of Mozart's more complex and ambitious sonatas and is generally regarded as one of his greatest works for the instrument.The sonata is divided into three movements:1.   Allegro - The first movement is a fast-paced and energetic sonata-allegro form, characterized by its lively theme and virtuosic passages. The movement begins with a bold and dramatic opening statement, followed by a series of contrasting themes and variations. According to Mozart's letters to his father, Dürnitz played the flute very well, and Mozart was impressed by his abilities. Canzona IIThe three contrasting movements include slow, powerful chords, contrapuntal moving parts and fugue-like lively themes. This arrangement includes a violin III part which can be used if no violas are available. The double bass part, whilst making a significant contribution, could also be omitted if no basses are available. All of Emma's arrangements find creative and artistic ways to re-present original pieces in a way that suits the new instruments and ensemble whilst maintaining the integrity of the original piece. Her aim is to go far beyond a simple copying of the melody and harmony, but to create an arrangement that sounds as if the piece was always meant for these new instruments.

Add a touch of blues to your string orchestra repertoire with this lazy ‘ole’ tune in the style of early Duke Ellington, at the time he was playing New York’s Cotton Club. In this type of number, Ellington typically used three clarinets playing a harmonised melody, which is why this tune, Harlem Love Call, works well with a string orchetra, the three clarinets being replaced by violins 1, violins 2 and violas. The celli and basses play a supporting role and propel everything along. Play it in a lazy fashion and bend a few notes here and there if you wish. It’s that kind of piece. Note that it starts quietly at A and increases in volume through B and C. It quietens down at D and E is quieter still (pianissimo) through to the end. Length 2.30 mins.
