Lascia ch’io Pianga is a beautiful aria from Handel’s Opera Rinaldo The opera premiered in London in 1711 and during his lifetime was the most successful of Handel’s operas. However, following his death there were no further productions until a school in London revived it in 1933. Handel used the melody of Lascia ch’io Pianga in two other works, but it is the version from Rinaldo that has achieved a deserved place in the concert hall, and a starring role in films like Farinelli.This version of Lascia ch’io Pianga is arranged as a Solo for Cello and Piano and both parts are reasonably simple; the performance time is around three and a half minutes. The pdf file contains both the piano score and a separate solo part. You can listen to a full performance of this arrangement on Clarinet via the YouTube link above.Musicians at an early intermediate level and above will find Lascia ch’io Pianga ideal for formal and informal performances, with both the solo and accompaniment enjoying melodic interest. Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with developing tone, phrasing and expression. David McKeown #4728549. Published by David McKeown (A0.587657). The Trumpet Tune and Air was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on the trumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was attributed to Henry Purcell. But more recently many have questioned whether the composer was in fact Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. What is known is that the piece was written for a semi-opera called The Island Princess, and that both men contributed music to the production. In recent years this piece has become a popular wedding favourite.This full version is arranged as a solo for Cello and Piano and the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. Here, the famous main theme is arranged for Solo Cello and Piano, directly from the orchestral score. The first performance of the ballet in Moscow in 1877 was not well received. The production was fraught with disagreements between choreographer and composer; the Russian audience were suspicious of the story’s Germanic origins and the music was regarded as too complex for ballet. Tchaikovsky did not live to see a triumphant revival production in 1895 that confirmed Swan Lake as one of the greatest ballet scores of all. Included in the single download are six pages of piano score and a separate two-page part for the solo instrument. It’s Been a Long Long Time is best known to modern audiences as the song at the end of The Avengers, Endgame, where Steve Rogers, after seventy years, finally gets his dance with Peggy Carter. The song of course, is much older. Two versions of It’s Been a Long Long Time topped the charts in late 1945, and as US servicemen returned from Europe and the Pacific, it perfectly caught the mood of the times. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals. The writer, John Newton, led a dissolute life as a sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style. The words he wrote in Amazing Grace are an intimate retelling of his spiritual journey. The hymn was written in 1773, and was sung to many different melodies initially, but since the mid nineteenth century it has become most closely associated with the famous folk tune melody presented here, New Britain.This version is arranged as a solo for Cello with Piano accompaniment. The melody is played four times, each verse in a different style. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop. Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard.
