Â Cogs & Gears evokes images of a well-oiled machine, driving. . .pushing. . .moving. The opening section locks measures of 3/4 and 6/8 together, working in tandem to propel the melody forward. The middle of the piece keeps the same pulse, but uses a jaunty melody to move first into 4 and then, with increasing frequency, measures of 2 and 3. The opening motif reappears before the piece once again pushes into the the lively second theme as it bounces towards its playful conclusion. The opera was called Xerxes, sometimes written Serses and pronounced something like “ZERT-seesâ€. It was commissioned by The King’s Theater in London and composed by Handel (who had become naturalized British and lived in London at the time) around 1737 and 1738. The opera is loosely based on the historical figure King Xerxes, who ruled from around 522-486 BC and was the fourth king of the Achaemenid Empire, a vast region that covered most of the present-day Middle East. The melody is often known simply as Handel’s Largo (despite being marked “Larghetto†in the musical score) and is the opening aria in the opera. The aria, known by its opening line Ombra mai fu is sung by Xerxes to a plane tree: “Tender and beautiful fronds of my beloved plane tree, let fate smile upon you...†Although this lovely melody has survived over the years, the opera itself was a complete failure when it was first performed in London in 1738. This arrangement is in G major and the cello part is written in the bass clef throughout. The top note is the G above the bass clef (G4) and the piece generally requires the use of long and sustained bowing (indicted in the score), though the cello fingering has been omitted. The piano part has been kept as simple as possible. Being so well-known, this piece would make a popular encore number for a cello recital.

This arrangement adapted for violoncello and piano was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, in order to be performed by young music students who want to enter the symphonic music. Besides, it can also be used by professional musicians for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. The transcription remains faithful to the structure, with only one change in tone, so that it is comfortable for all the instruments in the formation, as well as being used as an activity in ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions.Beethoven's Turkish March (Op. 113) is the 4th movement of the operatic work: The Ruins of Athens, a set of incidental pieces written in 1812 by Ludwig van Beethoven, where the melody was originally written in 1809 as Theme with Six Variations for Piano, Op. 76. The work was written to accompany the play of the same name by August von Kotzebue, for the dedication of a new theater in Pest. Perhaps the best known part of the composition is the Marcia alla turca, In Latin America, this movement became known in Jean-Jacques Perrey's version (who titled it The Elephant never Forgets) since it was used as the opening theme of the successful Mexican TV comedy El Chavo del Ocho. The opening and the turkish march are often performed separately, and the other pieces in this set are not often heard.

The piece is 85 measures long and in 6/4 meter is written in ternary form; after the primary theme, the secondary theme starts in measure 19, followed by a modified version of the primary theme in measure 70. The opening section moves into a contrasting middle section in the same key signature, which flows back to the opening material in a transitional passage. The reprise of the first section grows out of this, followed by a Picardy third ending.This arrangement for cello with piano accompaniment reflects faithfully the original and is suitable for any purpose and occasion.

Paradoxes: Sonata for Cello and Piano (1998) was written as a commission frommusicologist and cellist Larry KludgeThe conception and inspiration of this sonata had the idea of paradoxes behind it. Ouruniverse is certainly full of these paradoxes, and they range from the most practical in natureto the most highly philosophical in nature. Each of the movements in this work isparadoxical in a variety of musical ways. The movement titles present the foundation ideasfor each movement, stillness, brevity, and movement; however, those serve as only thebeginning for the paradoxes in the work. The first movement, Paradox of Stillness, openswith a statement of the main melodic theme for the work. The melody and pitches of thattheme are used in a variety of ways throughout. The second section serves as a contrast to theopening after which the opening section is recalled again for the close. The brief secondmovement, Paradox of Brevity, is a very fast moving movement for the cello and the piano.Driving rhythms and odd harmonic twists pervade the movement. The final movement,Paradox of Movement, opens with and sustains a moto perpetuo dance for almost the entiremovement with a break in the middle for a brief cadenza for the solo cello. As for the title, the name of the piece: I am not entirely sure, whether “Marlowe´s Theme†is correct. The music of the opening scene has no name, as far as I´ve been able to determine, and on Davis Shire´s own piano solo version there´s a combination of this piece with “Marlowe´s Themeâ€. Written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley, the song was released as the lead single from the Heaven on Earth album on September 14, 1987, and it reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 on December 5, 1987, becoming Carlisle's only US chart-topper to date. A month later it peaked at number one in the United Kingdom, where it held the top spot of the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. In Australia it peaked at number 2. The opera was not well received when it premiered in London in 1736 and sank into immediate obscurity, only to re-emerged as one of Handel’s best-loved works nearly two hundred years later. Ombra Mai Fù is often referred to as Handel’s Largo. In 1906 Ombra Mai Fù gained the distinction of being the first piece of music ever broadcast on radio. This full version of Ombra Mai Fù is arranged as a Solo for Cello and Piano and both parts are reasonably simple; the performance time is around three minutes. The pdf file contains both the piano score and a separate solo part. You can listen to a full performance of this arrangement on Clarinet via the YouTube link above.Musicians at an early intermediate level and above will find Ombra Mai Fù ideal for formal and informal performances, with both the solo and accompaniment enjoying melodic interest.
