Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549528 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Contemporary,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 11 pages. Jmsgu3 #3505753. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549528). Duration: ca. 3:40, Score: 5 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Super-famous instantly recognizable tune, not very difficult - suitable for a recital, funeral or church meditation. Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions. Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.Register for free lifetime revisions and updates at www.jamesguthrie.com

Penitent Thief, The (for viola and piano)
Viola, Piano
Piano,Viola - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1039822 Composed by David M. Sterr…

Piano,Viola - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1039822 Composed by David M. Sterrett. Classical,Contemporary,Sacred. Score and part. 49 pages. David Sterrett Music #644666. Published by David Sterrett Music (A0.1039822). This piece depicts the story of the Penitent Thief, one of the two other men who hung on a cross beside Jesus, as told in the Bible: One of the thieves who were hanged by Jesus was hurling abuse at him, saying, 'Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!' But the other answered, and rebuking him, said, 'Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? We indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.' And he was saying, 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!' And Jesus said to him, 'Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.' (Luke 23:39-43) I initially set out to portray the scene from a narrative perspective. As I began composing and felt the story resonate more and more with my own spiritual experiences, I decided to shift the focus onto what I imagined the emotional and spiritual experiences of the Penitent Thief were during this brief but transformative interaction with Jesus right before death. While the passage does not describe his internal experience, I imagine that Jesus’ extension of kindness and mercy, along with the promise “Today you will be with me in Paradise,†profoundly impacted him. In composing this, I hoped to convey that transformative encounter. Ultimately, The Penitent Thief depicts an experience familiar to many Christians: that of a lost and broken soul discovering Jesus offers the truth and salvation they long for. To capture the element of dialog, I envisioned the Viola as the Penitent Thief and the Piano as Jesus. Each has a distinct theme/motif. On the cross, the Penitent Thief is consumed by shame, sorrow, and fear of death. His demeanor shifts between moments of quiet contemplation and visceral emotional outbursts. Facing imminent death, he yearns for redemption and truth. He looks at Jesus hanging next to him, blameless and holy. He feels admiration and praise and is overcome by penitence and humility. He calls out, half in desperation, half in worship: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom…†Jesus, moved by his penitence and belief, responds with kindness and mercy, extending salvation: Today you will be with me in Paradise.†The Penitent Thief imagines Paradise and hopes for this to hold true. His hope becomes briefly overshadowed by lingering doubt and fear. Silence falls. Then, as the hour of death arrives, the man reaches out again and clings to Jesus’ promise, this time with more desperation. His soul suddenly becomes filled with joy, finding the fulfillment of longing, bound with Christ, and knowing that he will soon be at rest in Paradise. At peace, the man gazes upward, gives his final sputtering breath, and his soul departs this world.

Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1493034 Composed by Clémence de Grandval. Arranged by Paul Wehage. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and part. 33 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #1069724. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.1493034). Maria-Félicie-Clémence de Grandval (1828–1907) was born on January 28, 1828 at Saint-Rémy-des-Monts, France and died on January 15, 1907 in Paris. After the death of her mother, Louise Adèle du Temple de Mésières, her father the Baron de Reiset, a military officer remarried with an Englishwoman and moved his family to London. After beginning her musical studies privately, she studied the piano with the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, who was a family friend. Returning to France, she studied the piano briefly with Chopin and composition with Camille Saint-Saëns, who remember their first meeting: “I was 12 when I heard the vicomtesse de Grandval for the first time, who was 18. It was at a musical morning concert at the home of the violinist de Cuvillon. She sang a song of her own composition ‚La Source, in which she accompanied herself. I was struck by the fluidity of her playing, which purely and without useless inflections, was quite close to my way of viewing music. This unified and tranquil style came out of her studies with Chopin.” Camille Saint-Saëns: Quelques mots sur l’exécution des œuvres de Chopin, in: “Le courrier musical de Paris” 13 [1910], S. 386). At first writing mostly sacred music, most of her public success was due to her comic operas: la Comtesse Eva, la Pénitente, Piccolino and Mazeppa. She also wrote orchestral music, chamber music, and over 60 songs (to poets such as Sully Prudhomme, Michel Carré, Henri Meilhac, Georges Hartmann, Charles Grandmougin and Louis Gallet.) She is chiefly known today for her music for wind instruments, especially for the oboe.

Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549373 Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Sacred,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3491405. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549373). Duration: 4:55, Score: 6 pages, Solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages. A very famous aria (Ombra mai fu) from XerxesSuitable for any venue requiring meditative music. Excellent choice for a recital encore. Xerxes Xerxes is, in fact, an opera seria in three acts by Handel. Moreover, Handel conducted the premiere performance in London in 1738. Handel casts the opera in Persia in 470 BC. The part of Xerxes was indeed originally sung by a soprano castrato. Nowadays, the part is generally sung by a mezzo-soprano or conversely a counter-tenor. In the first place, Xerxes sings an opening aria, Ombra mai fu to a plane tree. Handel sets this aria to one of his most truly famous melodies. Although many refer to it traditionally as Handel’s Largo, Handel has, on the contrary, clearly marked Larghetto in the score. Handel Background George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) was born in Germany but eventually became a British citizen. Nonetheless, he was a famous Baroque composer. In fact, he became famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems, and organ concertos. Handel studied music and, by and large, worked as a composer in Germany and Italy before moving to London. On the whole, Handel was very familiar with the contemporary music of Italy and Germany. Career in England It is essential to realize that Italian opera was all the rage in England at the time. Moreover, Handel was really good at writing them. Therefore, he started not one but three opera companies in England. Alexander's Feast was a huge success in 1736, but Handel began composing English choral works. After success with the Messiah in 1742) he certainly never again wrote an Italian opera. Consequently, he died in 1759, a treasured genius. Accordingly, the English government gave him full state honors at his funeral. Hence, he is buried in Westminster Abbey in London. Legacy Music historians agree that Handel was in general one of the greatest composers of the Baroque era.  To demonstrate, his works such as the Messiah, Water Music, and Music for the Royal Fireworks remain consistently popular up to the present time. He especially composed the coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest for the coronation of George II. Nevertheless, it has specifically been performed at every succeeding British coronation since. His oratorio Solomon has by all means also continued to be prevalent. As a matter of fact, Sinfonia from act 3 was featured in the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. Handel was particularly prolific. To enumerate, he wrote over forty operas.  Since the late 1960s, we have expressly experienced a revival of baroque music. Similarly, we have especially seen a pique of interest in historically informed musical performances. Since his death in 1779, interest in Handel's music has all in all, expanded. Â

Mozart wrote this on commission while working on the Magic Flute. Program this for Lent or Easter meditations, or any Christian communion service. Also, this would be a strong recital encore showing mastery of phrasing, tone quality, and dynamics.

Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549724 Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contemporary,Multicultural,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and part. 22 pages. Jmsgu3 #3531351. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549724). Duration: ca. 7:00, Score: 12 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano: 7 pages. An epic choice for a recital or funeral. Fauré Background: In the first place, Gabriel Fauré 1845 –1924) was a famous French composer, musician, and educator. Furthermore, his musical ideas influenced numerous 20th-century composers. Therefore, historians regard him as one of the leading French composers of his time. Famous Works: Among his most famous compositions, by and large, are the Pavane, Elegie (op. 24), Requiem, Sicilienne, Nocturnes for piano and the songs Après un rêve and Clair de lune. Inasmuch as his early works are well-known and relatively easy to perform, Faure’s music seems to have become gradually more difficult during his later life. In other words, his later works are somewhat esoteric and complex. Early Home Life: Fauré was in fact born into a well-cultivated family. His aptitude for music became particularly clear early on - when he was still a boy. Under these circumstances, his parents sent him to a music institution in Paris. Consequently, the training he received there prepared him for a career as a church organist and choirmaster. Middle Life: It is important to realize that Fauré studied music composition with the French musical mastermind Camille Saint-Saëns, who became his lifelong friend. Fauré eventually graduated from college and earned a living as an organist and educator. During this period, he had, on the whole, little time to compose. He consequently became more successful in his middle age, becoming organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire. However, he still needed time on balance for composing. Therefore, given these points, he withdrew to the countryside during the summer to focus on composing. Later Life: Fauré was, in the final analysis, recognized in France as the foremost French composer of his time. The French government held a national musical tribute particularly for him in Paris. The French President notably headed the ceremony. Elsewhere, on the contrary, Fauré's music was slow to become accepted, except of course, in England. Legacy: Historians often describe Fauré's music in general as a transition between the end of Romanticism and the beginning of modernism. As an illustration, when Fauré was born, Chopin was still composing. However, by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and atonal music, in particular, had come to fruition. Fauré, by all means, suffered from increasing deafness in his later years. Some musicologists believe this to be indeed the cause of the esoteric nature of Faure’s final works.

Score and part. 62 pages. Jmsgu3 #5306365. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551513). 1. Morning Mood, 2. Ase's Death, 3. Anitra's Dance, 4. In the Hall of the Mountain KingGrieg BackgroundIn the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.LegacyGrieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.Holberg Suite and Misc. SummaryIt must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Piano,Viola - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548681 Composed by Adam. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #3410447. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548681). Duration: 4:56. Score 5 pg. 44 ms. Solo part: 2 pg. Piano part: 3 pg.Cantique de Noël The French composer Adolphe Adam was already famous as a composer of many successful ballets and operas. Then, in the 1840’s he wrote his most famous work - O Holy Night. The original song title was Minuit Chretiens or Cantique de Noël. Placide Cappeau provided the original song lyrics. The song was first performed in Roquemaure by the opera singer Emily Laurey at midnight mass in 1847. It became very popular among the French, much the way that Silent Night was famous elsewhere. In the 1850’s John S. Dwight, a Unitarian minister and music teacher translated the song into English. Adolphe Adam In his younger years, Adam studied organ and composition at the Paris Conservatoire. He also played the timpani in the Conservatoire orchestra. Adam used his savings and borrowed money to open a new opera house - the fourth opera house in Paris in 1847. Unfortunately, the Revolution of 1848 forced him to close. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire from 1849 until his death in 1856. Placide Cappeau The poet Cappeau was an advocate of the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire. Voltaire was renowned for criticizing the Catholic church, religious intolerance, and dogma in general. Consequently, Cappeau made the Redeemer figure in his song a kind of reformer of injustices, in particular, the problem of original sin. To begin with, people recognized Cappeau’s theology as eccentric, probably even doubtful. Theology In the earlier form of Minuit, the Christ figure descends to intervene with His Father’s plan to punish mankind. Traditional doctrine pronounces that Christ came from love, not to intervene. This version also declares that Christ appeared to expunge the original sin of Adam. Cappeau removed this part from his poem years later, because he just didn’t believe it. He preferred to portray Christ as the reformer of disparity and unfairness. Before long, the writer/politician Alphonse de Lamartine referred to the Minuit as the the Marseillaise of religion. Most French churchmen agreed with this idea but certainly did not consider it a tribute. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Piano,Viola - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549032 Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Holiday,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3447483. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549032). Schubert's Moment Musicaux is a collection of six short pieces for solo piano composed by Franz Schubert. They are among the most frequently played of Schubert's piano music and have been recorded many times. The Moments Musicaux are supreme examples of Schubert's ability to suggest the subtlest nuances of emotion, which shift and alter literally in a moment. The composition of the Moments was quite sporadic, with the third and sixth movements appearing in various collections of works compiled by publishers in 1823/24 and the complete collection appearing in 1828, the year of Schubert's death. The Moments Musicaux are short pieces, shorter than his Impromptus, and are collected under the opus number 94. They encompass various moods and moderate difficulty, showcasing Schubert's skill in touching different tonal areas within a single movement. Schubert's Moment Musicaux No. 3 is a significant and popular piece. It is described as energetic, playful, and lyrical. The Moments Musicaux are among Schubert's best-loved works, and No. 3 is known for its whimsical merriment.

Piano,Viola - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549217 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Baroque,Holiday,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. Jmsgu3 #3468034. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549217). J. S. Bach BWV 508. Bist du bei mir Bach adapted this aria from a lost Stölzel opera called Diomedes. He changed the original orchestral instrumentation to soprano, strings, and continuo.  He also modified the voice-leading making it sound more like a Bach composition. The work appears as BWV 508 No. 25 in the Anna Magdalena Notebook No. 2.  Source Only a few remnants of the original opera have survived. Historians speculate that Anna Magdalena got the song from the Leipzig Opera after the bankruptcy of 1720. Chances are good, though, that the tune was a favorite of everyone in Leipzig at the time.  Lyrics When thou art near, I go with joyTo death and to my rest.O how joyous would my end be,If your fair hands      Would close my faithful eyes. - Unknown Bach Overview First of all, Johann Sebastian Bach is maybe the greatest composer in music history. Certainly, he was prolific. As a result, everyone has heard of his works. Furthermore, these works number well over a thousand. It seems like people are probably most familiar with instrumental works such as the Brandenburg Concertos, and the Goldberg Variations. But, similarly famous are such noteworthy works as the Well-Tempered Clavier, the Musical Offering, and certainly the Art of Fugue. Seems like his most famous vocal works include the most noteworthy Mass in B Minor. Also, most noteworthy are the St. John Passion, and indeed the Christmas Oratorio.  History Bach came from a long line of musicians and above all, composers. Consequently, he, first of all, pursued a career as a church organist. So as a result, he gained employment in various Protestant churches in Germany. For a while, he worked as a court musician in Weimar and Köthen. Here he probably developed his organ style and likewise his chamber music style. Eventually, he, therefore, gained an appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas in Leipzig. Here he worked until difficulties with his employer ultimately drove him away. The King of Poland finally appointed him as court composer.  Style It seems like Bach created a fascinating new international style. He synthesized elements of the most noteworthy European music ideas into his new style. Even more, this new style was probably his synthesis of European musical rhythm and form. Furthermore, he demonstrated a complete mastery of counterpoint and motivic development. His sense of harmonic organization probably propelled him to the top. Revival        Mendelssohn conducted a Bach revival in the nineteenth century. His effort probably helped to re-familiarize the public with the magnitude of Bach’s works. During this period, scholars published many noteworthy Bach biographies. Moreover, Wolfgang Schmieder published the BWV (Bach Werke Verzeichnis). As a result, this is now the official catalog of his entire artistic output. The BWV number allows us to locate a work in the catalog. Sometimes scholars will simply use an S (Schmieder) as an abbreviation for BWV.  Voyager NASA launched two Voyager spacecraft in 1977. Onboard are phonograph records with sounds, music, and images of life on Earth. The purpose of the launch was to inform intelligent extraterrestrial life forms about conditions on Earth. The music on the disc is varied. There is Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky among others. However, because Bach is so important in our music history, it contains three times more Bach than all the others combined. Â

Published by David McKeown (A0.587645). Amazing Grace is perhaps the best-known and best-loved hymn in the world. The writer, John Newton, led a dissolute life as a sailor in the slave trade for many years before marriage, along with a close encounter with death at sea, dramatically changed his perspective. He lived out his later years as a devout and charismatic clergyman in the English countryside, renowned for his direct and personal style. The words he wrote in Amazing Grace are an intimate retelling of his spiritual journey. The hymn was written in 1773, and was sung to many different melodies initially, but since the mid nineteenth century it has become most closely associated with the famous folk tune melody presented here, New Britain. This version is arranged as a solo for Viola with Piano accompaniment. The melody is played four times, each verse in a different style. Raymond Fenech #4616163. Published by Raymond Fenech (A0.760525). Waltz in A minor, often designated as No. 19, is a waltz for solo piano composed by Frédéric Chopin. The waltz was written sometime between 1843 and 1848, but was not published until 1860, after the composer's death. The piece shows great sadness, while enclosing some episodes that hint at happiness and hope. The first theme of the piece uses a simple but effective melody, conveying a sad portrait, with decorative ornaments used throughout. The second theme is more interesting and lively, although it still has a certain sadness. About halfway through the piece, there is a modulation into A major, featuring a happy and joyful melody. The piece concludes with the main theme, followed by a short coda. The Level is Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate and the duration is approximately 2.01 minutes. It could be played in any type of recital/concert.

Lascia ch’io Pianga is a beautiful aria from Handel’s Opera Rinaldo The opera premiered in London in 1711 and during his lifetime was the most successful of Handel’s operas.
