The first six of Johannes Brahms' Hungarian Dances, expertly arranged by American composer P. F. Strohm for a trio consisting of two tenor trombones and piano. Brahms was enthralled with the rhythms and melodies of Hungarian music. He originally wrote his 21 Hungarian Dances for piano four-hands, and loved performing them for his friends. P. F. Strohm has placed the first six of these musical gems into a new setting of two trombones and piano, drawing from the original piano score; from the violin and piano arrangements made by Brahms' friend, Joseph Joachim; and from Brahms' own solo piano arrangements. These new arrangements are for skilled performers on all parts. Written for and dedicated to Mark Kellogg and Larry Zalkind at the Eastman School of Music, the dances are excellent for recitals and contests, and make wonderful encores. The first movement, marked Andante con moto, starts in A-flat major with flowing themes, then a development in G# minor, and an ebullient recap. The second movement is marked Lento con affeto, in D-flat major, with a beautiful, plaintive trombone melody framed by a sparse but enveloping piano. The third movement is a spirited waltz in A-flat, weaving two lyrical themes among modes and keys. The final movement (Allegro) shifts to a bold F minor main theme that is developed throughout, leading to a joyous F major conclusion. This is an outstanding recital work for serious players. The rhythmic roots of this piece are in the music of Central and South America. Â The first movement is based on bossa nova, in ABCBA form, with trombone and piano working together to create the syncopation. It segues into the second movement, a sweeping slow beguine in A-flat minor with a lovely A-flat major mid-section. The third movement has a declamatory opening, that goes into a driving samba. The piano generates the rhythm, with the trombone providing an aggressive lead and a fierce, improvisational-sounding midsection. An outstanding and unique work for contest, concert or recital. The work is demanding in both technique and ensemble, but should be truly enjoyable to play and hear. The first movement, marked Moderato giocoso, is in sonata form in the key of G. The exposition is played muted, moving abruptly into a driving and open development, centered in D minor. The recap starts open, then re-employs the mute for a quiet close. The second movement is a beautiful, flowing song Lento con espressione, in D-flat major. It shifts to C# minor for a muted mid-section, then returns to the open horn in D-flat major to close. Â The third movement is marked Allegro gioioso. Â It is a driving 2/4, based around C Major, and briefly muted in the middle. Difficulty level for both instruments is medium-advanced. The work is tonal, in three movements. The first movement, Moderato, is in sonata form largely in 6/8, with a lyrical trombone and sparkling piano moving between B and E-flat. The middle movement in A major labeled Andante sospirando has Eastern overtones, both rhythmic and tonal. In a sub-divided 3/4, the sound in the first half is a mystical Lydian, shifting the same melody to Ionian at the midpoint. A dramatic piano section punctuates both halves. The third movement, Allegro is a modified rondo form in a duple meter with an Americana sound. It brims with confidence and playfulness, alternating between C and G-flat, with sweeping themes and a driving, wilder midsection. Sonata No. 5 for Trombone and Piano is an outstanding work for contest, concert or recital. Difficulty level is medium-advanced. Performance time is 17:30. Member, ASCAP.

Strohm is in three movements and tonal throughout, using various modes to weave familiar yet unpredictable lines and harmonies.The first movement, in F, is a brisk and energetic sonata form, using various major and minor modes. The second movement is a Larghetto in simple ABA song form. The somber, reflective opening section is in f minor. The lush middle section builds through major keys, cascading back to the original f minor theme to close. The third movement opens with a solo statement that leads into a dance-like 6/8 rondo in F, alternating its energetic themes between minor and major. Dedicated to trombonist Eric Wallace, it's difficulty level is medium-advanced. Sonata No. 1 for Bass Trombone and Piano is perfect for bass trombone recital or contest.
