Little is known of the origins of Just a Closer Walk With Thee, other than it was sung in African-American churches in the nineteenth century. National religious conventions in the 1930s gave the hymn a wider audience. Many versions were recorded in the 1940s and Just a Closer Walk With Thee was quickly adopted as a standard by the New Orleans Jazz revival.Just a Closer Walk With Thee is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The melody is played, with variations, five times in 6/8 meter. This song was released by Calum Scott in 2017, but a duet vesion in 2018 with Leona Lewis charted internationally to even greater success. This male/female duet lends itself well to translation as a violin/cello version. Thus, in this arrangement, the cello opens with the melody before handing off to the violin. Close harmonies between the two instruments make for some very lush and sensual moments. There is also a section where the violin melody is in the upper register while accompanied by arpeggios in the cello's lower register. This spacing gives a dramatic climax in sound exactly where it is needed. The ending mysteriously decrescendos to a whisper for an effect that makes the listener want more.

This song was first composed in 2001 as an instrumental piece, and it wasn't until about a year later that an Irish novelist added the lyrics. That's why the music speaks so emotionally and provaocatively in and of itself - even without words. It is definitely Celtic-influenced music, but it wasn't until American up-and-coming singer Josh Groban recorded it in 2003 that it gained worldwide fame. In fact, Groban performed You Lift Me Up at Super Bowl XXXVIII and also at many national events of note. The Cello opens this Duo arrangement with the melody in the Irish-Tenor range. The Violin then plays it in the soprano register before re-stating it an octave higher - like unto an Irish flute. The final reprise of the melancholy melody comes back one last time as a toned-down, soft-spoken voicing before a definitive cadence brings everything to a close.

Elgar wrote fourteen variations on a theme, each one depicting close friends and family. Nimrod represents his publisher and friend Augustus Jaeger. The biblical character of Nimrod is described as a mighty hunter, and jaeger means hunter in German.Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Both parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and lyrical legato playing. The overall performance time is around three minutes. Published by Socrates Arvanitakis (A0.1371762). GENERAL PREFACEThis edition of violin and violoncello duets follows closely my publication of the same Greek folk pieces for classical guitar. The arrangements for guitar solo were written in two-part counterpoint and followed the strophic form of the folk songs involved. The melodic transcriptions of the folk melodies were not based in any particular performance, also avoiding the elaborate in many cases instrumental introductions associated with these songs. Thus, only the vocal melodies in a general recognizable version were presented. This new presentation for instrumental duets will stay with this generalised melodic version (without exploiting the instrumental introductions), but the form from strophic will become ternary (ABA).
