GENERAL PREFACE – ΓΕÎΙΚΟΣ ΠΡΟΛΟΓΟΣThis edition of violin and violoncello duets follows closely my publication of the same Greek folk pieces for classical guitar. The arrangements for guitar solo were written in two-part counterpoint and followed the strophic form of the folk songs involved. The melodic transcriptions of the folk melodies were not based in any particular performance, also avoiding the elaborate in many cases instrumental introductions associated with these songs. Thus, only the vocal melodies in a general recognizable version were presented. This new presentation for instrumental duets will stay with this generalised melodic version (without exploiting the instrumental introductions), but the form from strophic will become ternary (ABA). PRACTICE needs would vary according to the level of the performers but my goal is to be sight-readable for most performers and groups. AUDIO SAMPLE The 30 second mp3 is frequently shortened and may not start at the introduction to get to the reprise. The actual introduction will be in the sheet music. LISTENABILITY I have performed thousands of weddings and special events. I make it a goal for the music to carry as well as possible through loud and large space situations. Idelssohn's research into the music cultures of the different Jewish communities of Jerusalem laid the foundation for the growth of a unique melding of east and west that is the Israeli musical style. · Hevenu Shalom Aleichem (We brought you peace) was first published in 1910 by the musicologist Franz Haverel, as a Turkish folk melody Sala'am Aleikum. It came to Palestine in the same year, as an advertisement for Turkish cigarettes; the tune was printed on the package. · Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well. You are also welcome to try some of my other arrangements. GENERAL PREFACE – ΓΕÎΙΚΟΣ ΠΡΟΛΟΓΟΣThis edition of violin and violoncello duets follows closely my publication of the same Greek folk pieces for classical guitar. The arrangements for guitar solo were written in two-part counterpoint and followed the strophic form of the folk songs involved. The melodic transcriptions of the folk melodies were not based in any particular performance, also avoiding the elaborate in many cases instrumental introductions associated with these songs. Thus, only the vocal melodies in a general recognizable version were presented. This new presentation for instrumental duets will stay with this generalised melodic version (without exploiting the instrumental introductions), but the form from strophic will become ternary (ABA).
