It’s Been a Long Long Time is arranged as a duet for one Trumpet and one Trombone.It’s Been a Long Long Time is best known to modern audiences as the song at the end Avengers: Endgame, where Steve Rogers, after seventy years, finally gets to dance with Peggy Carter. The song of course, is much older. Two versions of It’s Been a Long Long Time topped the charts in late 1945, and as US servicemen returned from Europe and the Pacific, it perfectly caught the mood of the times. One version was by Bing Crosby, and the other by the Harry James Orchestra featuring Kitty Kallen on vocals. It is the latter version that is heard in Endgame and the one that forms the basis of this arrangement.Musicians at an intermediate standard will find It’s Been a Long Long Time ideal for formal and informal concert performances. with both parts enjoying plenty of melodic interest. This triumphant Easter hymn (a.k.a. “Thine Be the Gloryâ€) has been newly-arranged for a Brass Trio.  Some phrases are repeated to add a contrapuntal flavor.  Verse two is softer and in rhythmic diminution, creating a lighter sound.  Verse three is similar to Verse one, with a modulation of a Major second.  It enters louder, building toward the glorious ending.  Appropriate as an exalted prelude or postlude, worship, concert, contest/festival, or recital piece.  Adaptable to school or church settings.  Score and Set of Parts.  Performance Time:  4:02.

Score and parts. 5 pages. David McKeown #711997. Published by David McKeown (A0.1109637). The most popular of Scott Joplin’s piano rags during his lifetime, The Maple Leaf Rag was published in 1899. Joplin lived for a while in Sedalia, Missouri and the Maple Leaf Club in that town is thought to have provided the name for this composition. It provided Joplin with a steady income for the rest of his life, and while he requested that it be played at his funeral, his wife refused as she felt it inappropriate. It was the first track on Joshua Rifkin’s famous 1970 revival recording of Joplin’s music and, never waning in popularity, it has featured in hundreds of films. This duet version for one Trumpet and one Trombone includes all four sections of the original composition. The tempo in recorded versions varies widely between 72 and 126, so the marking of 92 is a suggestion only. The YouTube link is a full performance of the Clarinet version of this arrangement. Musicians at an advanced intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The overall performance time is around four minutes. We’re calling it a jam because both players get to play a solo over the repeated accompaniment line. First the trombone player jams, then the trumpet. Here is the first of what I hope to be many, many duets made possible by my Just Friends video series. In this series I am inviting one of my musician friends over to make music, do an interview and maybe follow it all up with a Q and A session. I wrote this duet for one of those videos and we had a good time recording it. I enjoy writing music for the people I work with. Does trumpet and trombone seem like an odd duet to write? Well, you may not believe this, but sometimes trumpet players have trombone player friends. :-) Thus, the purpose of the duet. Trumpet Pro Skill Level The highest note in the trumpet part is B natural. The rhythms are also just a little complicated. That’s why we put this at the Trumpet Pro level. We recorded it the same day when I wrote it, so it’s not like I was working on this for days. But there was a little bit of awkwardness in the trumpet part. Practice Recommendations My number one suggestion for practicing this piece is to learn the rhythms first. Notice the anticipation of the third beat. This happens in almost every measure. This rhythm grew on me during my trip to South Africa in 2016 when I performed with the Afrika Mkhize big band. There were lots of songs at the jazz festival in Grahamstown that had that twelve-eight groove with the anticipated third beat. I am NOT saying that this composition is South African. I would not presume to know how to write that kind of music. What I am saying is that the music in South Africa has influenced my writing. In much the same way as playing in all those salsa bands in the 90’s did. So, recognize that the rhythms in this composition are very important and learn those first. The rest of it should fall into place after that. About the Trumpet Pro Skill Level The Trumpet Pro skill level is the fifth skill level in our system. This skill level has exercises and music up to high C. There are many other considerations in this skill level but that is the most obvious.
