The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological form for which Oâ€™Connor says not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own familyâ€™s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the familyâ€™s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually out West during WWl nearly 300 hundred years later. Oâ€™Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style in which he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, maybe similar to what Oâ€™Connorâ€™s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, reveals music they must of encountered living in early America. Strings & Threads musically describes how folk music styles hundreds of years apart are interconnected - possessing a common thread, from an Irish reel to jazz. It is tonal oriented and to a great extent different than my original composition language which serves simple as a vehicle of direct communication to any music lover with an emphasis in melody and harmony. I used the tonalities of D minor and A major with the desire to create a flavor of nostalgic romanticism with some Greek character which is part of my heritage as musician. This was originally a song, which I wrote back in my tender years (also available on this site for alto and guitar), but it also works equally well as an instrumental piece. I have therefore also provided versions on this site for guitar with: flute alto saxophone French horn English horn (cor anglais) clarinet oboe violin. After a gentle introductory major chord arpeggio, the tension of the piece comes into play from the third bar where the melody line holds and repeats an augmented 4th suspension above the guitar. This note then returns as the arpeggio chords change underneath to reveal it as a minor third of a chord related by three degrees of separation from the original - C major to E flat minor. The harmonies and melody continue to sway in their relations in a curious and yet logical progression. I have provided score and parts and also a separate version of the guitar part which provides chord names and fretboard symbols; this would make it useful for educational purposes. The sound sample is an electronic preview.
