This charming, original musical pageant retells the Christmas Story through the eyes of the angels and reminds us to always trust in God. In That’s How the Story Goes, the archangels Michael and Raphael are hosting a heavenly campfire, and all the youngest angels want to hear the Christmas Story. Happy to oblige, the other archangels take turns telling their parts of the story. Gabriel tells of visiting Mary, Uriel tells of visiting Joseph, Sealtiel & Jehudiel tell of their visit to the shepherds, and Barachiel tells of visiting the three wise men in their dreams to warn them about King Herod. The musical features a simple script with minimal memorization which allows for maximum flexibility with age-range, cast size, and rehearsal time-- the longer, adapted scripture readings may be read from a book or binder. Each part of the story is followed by an original song sung by the entire cast. Costumes, sets, and props are also minimal, and there are no scene changes, which allow this show to be staged in any space, including traditional church sanctuaries. Approximate performance time 30 minutes That’s How the Story Goes features five original songs written and arranged for school-aged children by Joanna Mills. The songs are all set in an accessible range for young children, and feature simple tunes which are easy to learn. This package contains two versions of each song; an easy unison version (with optional easy descant or counterpoint harmonies on the final chorus), and a 2-part choir version, which features simple, easy-to-learn harmonies. This allows you to mix and match your arrangements to suit the abilities of your singers and your rehearsal time constraints. For those students who do not read music, the lyrics are included in the script. The piano accompaniments are at an intermediate level and guitar chords are included, which allows older youth to participate as musicians (or allows experienced accompanists to learn them quickly). Composer’s Note - Growing into meOn a particularly blustery Winter's day, I went to the National Arboretum in my home town of Canberra, Australia, with a bunch of very lovely kids from the Woden Valley Youth Choir (WVYC). Their director Alpha Gregory had asked me to come and do a composition workshop with the kids, to which I had replied with an enthusiastic YES!.I'd done this kind of thing with WVYC before, but this time around I wanted to take it somehow to the next level, to give the piece a real sense of place, a specific and experiential connection to the local community or landscape, and the Arboretum seemed a natural choice for me for an inspirational excursion. I had a family connection to it myself at the time, my cousin Emma worked there and was very passionate about it. Also, it is an outdoorsy kind of place and I have such fond memories of outdoorsy exploratory kinds of activities filling my entire childhood, a very typically Canberran thing. I'm sure the WVYC kids have a similar experience and I hope they know how lucky they are!So we put on our winter coats and scarves and hiked up the mountain, being sure to not only look at what was there, but also to listen, to touch, to smell. It was truly a multi sensory experience. Then we all went down to a local church hall and talked about what we saw and heard and smelt and the kids were just bursting with wonderful ideas for our new song. I've incorporated as many of their ideas as possible into the completed product, as well as my own over-arching theme; the oldest of the trees at the National Arboretum are only a couple of years older than some of the children in the group, so it seemed a nice parallel to make, their growing up alongside each other. It is my hope that the writing of this piece bonds these children to this important and magical place, so ripe with possibility, and that the connection is a lasting and meaningful one for them. The purpose of this series of sight-singing exercise books is to give choir directors supplemental materials with which to strengthen the reading skills of singers. These exercises may be used in a variety of ways, starting with unison choir, then two part, then switching parts, etc… to maximize the exercises’ content. No texts are provided, so that the singers may use neutral syllables to focus on tone, or solfege, numbers, or rhythm syllables, depending on the system the teacher uses. This volume contains the first 10 exercises of Volume 1, and then 10 more exercises that use only longer note values. Since Volume 1 also covers eighth note and sixteenth note rhythms and some compound meters, I decided to provide a volume with only the longer note values and then restructure the collection in the following way: in each series of volumes, A includes only longer note values, B introduces eighths and sixteenths, C introduces compound meter, and D introduces melodic minor.Volume 1 (ABCD)- Diatonic Seconds Volume 2 (ABCD) - Diatonic ThirdsVolume 3 (ABCD) - 1-5-1, octave leapsVolume 4 (ABCD) - FourthsVolume 5 (ABCD) - FifthsVolume 6 (ABCD) - SixthsVolume 7 (ABCD) - SeventhsVolume 8 (ABCD) - Chromatic intervalsIn general, the exercises give some direction for articulation, dynamics, and tempo. Though these are optional, the more notation detail the singers pay attention to, the greater their skill will be in reading all the notation on the page. In some cases, vagueness in these instructions leaves opportunities for singers to decide how to articulate, what tempo might be appropriate, and how loud or soft to sing.
