Composer’s Note - DaybreakDuring the Winter of 2016, I journeyed to my hometown Canberra for a job interview and audition. It was for the head of the new Music Academy at Canberra Girls Grammar School, my old school. Which was kind of weird. As part of my specifically designed interview/audition experience, I was required to run a composition workshop, and this song D​aybreak ​is the result of that.It was an odd experience to return to the scenes of my youth, to see how much everything had changed. So many new buildings, so many of the old buildings repurposed, so many more opportunities afforded to the girls at the school now than we could ever have dreamed in the late 80s and early 90s. It was pretty early in the morning when I arrived, the winter mist just beginning to clear to one of those perfect sunny cold Canberra days. The school is directly down the road from Parliament House, and as the mist cleared to reveal that magnificent flagpole above the treetops surrounding the school, I decided that the joy and optimism of a new day would be the perfect subject for our composing collaboration.The girls were very generous with their ideas. The song was finished within a few days and I sent it back to the school. I ​think​ they liked it? It was hard to tell from their response. I didn’t get the job. (No surprise to me, as I have almost never been successful at auditions and job interviews. Fortunately people just know my work, ask me to do stuff, and I just say yes. Haha.) But I’m a big believer in creativity as a way of healing. I still really like our song we wrote, those lovely girls and I, so I am releasing it into the wild.

The first day that I went in to meet them, I sat down with them on the floor and asked them what kind of performance they wanted to build. It was around the time that the Disney animated feature Frozen was very popular with kids. Or not, as it turns out, because one little boy’s hand shot up straight away and he said: “Tell you what I don’t wanna build: a stupid snowman!†He suggested we build a rocket instead. So that’s what we did. It’s a song about the wonder and curiosity we feel about the universe, of our desire to explore it, and of the determination and grit required to achieve that dream. It’s some very hard yards to build a rocket and to learn to fly it, but our dreams are always worth the work! I hope you have fun with this song. Teachers, I invite you to get as theatrical as you dare with it. In our original performance we had all these toy instruments, toy toolkits, and painted cardboard boxes. (So many boxes!). Composer’s Note - Happy PlaceI’m a lesbian who came-of-age/came-out in the mid 1990s, which means I caught the tail end of those lesbian stereotypes you used to hear about. It made me feel like I’d never inherited The Lesbian Gene. I was never one of the herbal tea sipping, yoga loving, hemp textiles wearing, hippie happy clappy campers of that time. I had girlfriends who were and I tried to humour them sometimes but it was always a strain.I had this one girlfriend who made me go camping once, a gathering with her hippie pagan friends. It was all inoffensive enough, I was having a very nice time sitting in the shade reading my book. Rather stupidly, I made the mistake of letting someone rope me into a thing called D​rumming The Boundary​. They thought I’d be good at it, being a professional musician. I thought it would probably please my girlfriend if I got involved, so I agreed to go along.To my surprise, the drums they’d set up were great instruments, some really top quality djembes that you’d be paying some good money for, so I made the rash assumption that the leader of this activity actually knew what she was doing. We were instructed to start drumming a h​eartbeat​ together, whereupon I discovered that these are people who couldn’t even play a plain old crotchet beat in ensemble. But they seemed to think they were playing in time, swooning and swaying and closing their eyes to ‘feel’ the music. It was starting to make me giggle. These were presumably the same lesbians I’d seen out in Sydney nightclubs who couldn’t dance in time with an electronic beat that repeatedly hits you over the head with its obviousness?! Once I’d had that thought, I couldn’t help my giggle becoming a full-blown guffaw. The dreadlocked hempy lady in charge glared at me, telling me I needed to relax into really f​eeling the heartbeat. ​Could she not see that it was because my whole body was shaking with hysterical laughter at their arhythmic playing? Honestly...I guess I just really don’t like hippies. There, I said it out loud. I tried, I tried really hard, but I just prefer my city life. It’s my ​Happy Place.​-- Sally Whitwell

Gretchen am Spinnrade (D. 118, Op. 2) is one of Schubert’s first, most successful, and most widely recognized accomplishments in the genre of the Lied, a 19th-century German art song for solo voice and piano. Schubert composed over 600 Lieder, but the breadth and compositional maturity of this 1814 example are an early indication of his gift for the form. The text is a strophic poem taken from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s play Faust, depicting a scene in which Gretchen, sitting at the spinning wheel (spinnrade), daydreams about Faust, a man with whom she is infatuated though she has only just met him and barely knows him. Schubert employs the first stanza as a refrain, repeating the text (“My peace is gone/My heart is heavy/I will never again find themâ€) to heighten the dramatic intensity as Gretchen becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her feelings. The piano accompaniment, with its relentless sixteenth notes in the right hand, depicts both Gretchen’s accumulating madness and the perpetual motion of the spinning wheel. Sixty-five measures pass before the pattern breaks, when Gretchen is so overcome by her emotions that she stops spinning while imagining Faust’s kiss. It then takes three tries to get the spinnrade turning again, which we hear in measures 69-71 before the spinning figure resumes in measure 72 to accompany Gretchen’s doleful refrain. This arrangement is also available for 3-part treble (SSA) voices published by Hal Leonard Corporation, 00140699.

It’s also easily adaptable for 2-part women or 2-part men. It is mostly in the key of Eb, but modulates to F for the final 2 choruses. It’s a very easy number to put together quickly. The bridge includes a 3-part split, but for younger choirs you can cut the lower alto part and just have two groups to make it easier. This is a bit of an oddity, admittedly, but in the event that you have a virtuoso pianist and a treble choir performing together at Christmas, it could be just what you're looking for! Such was the case in 2016, when Vancouver pianist Jane Coop was the guest of Elektra Women's Choir at their annual Chez Nous holiday concert. I created this piece in order to have something on the programme that was both Christmassy and yet involved the full-on pianism that would typically be on display at one of Jane's solo recitals. Somehow I managed to combine the melodies of not one but two familiar carols (Joy to the World and O Thou Joyful Day) with the flamboyant filigree and wild chromatics -- joyful in their own right! -- of Chopin's Étude Op. 10, No.8. The result, according to Elektra's artistic director, Morna Edmundson, is a fun, bright, and somewhat dizzying experience!
