Published by D H Hamill (A0.1012877). For Christmas programs, What Was It Like? is a beautiful and memorable choral work set for S.A.women's chorus or duet with piano accompaniment. The lyrics reflect the thoughts of so many of us who wonder what it felt like to those who witnessed the birth and early years of Jesus Christ. The vocal parts are all within normal ranges and of no particular difficulty. The piano accompaniment is of medium difficulty. Meter changes set off the verses from the chorus melody, and there is one key change. This is appropriate for both worship services and any public Christmas program venue. Performance time is five minutes. There are two other arrangements on the website, one for vocal solo medium voice and one for S.A.T.B. The lyricist, Bruce C. Kusch, is at this time the president of Ensign College in Salt Lake City, Utah. The composer, Dean H. Hamill, resides in Saratoga Springs, Utah and may be contacted at dean.hamill@hushmail.com.

The original version was written in the mid-1700s in Naples by the Catholic Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, Alfonso Maria de’ Liguori. At that time it was called Quanno nascette Ninno and was written in the Neapolitan dialect in the style of a pastorale.The song was later re-written in Italian by Pope Pius IX and thereafter it became famous as a Christmas carol all over the world. Originally containing seven verses, today’s performances of the carol in Italy generally include only the first two verses. Notable recordings and performances of the carol include those by Sergio Franchi, Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti. This arrangement features both Italian and English lyrics, with the English version being a very close adaptation of the original Italian.
