You have almost no power to affect any change in your life other than the biological ones that are happening to you daily. You've been feeling strange lately, nauseous in the mornings. You're soon to be married to an older man you barely know. Your cousin Elizabeth is pregnant and you are on your way to visit her. As you walk, you silently meditate on your current state of affairs, absentmindedly chanting a prayer you've heard since birth.Suddenly, a bright light and strange being appear, the being greets you and gives you the most bizarre news anyone has ever heard. After your initial shock, you can't help but praise God.Nunc dimittis: An old man is at the temple in Jerusalem. Year after year, day after day, hour after hour he has longed for deliverance from Roman oppression and the coming of Messiah. On this day, as he trudges along, he encounters a young girl, an older man and a baby. Not unusual, but something about the child catches his eye and draws him to the family. As he stands staring at the child, suddenly he knows. He knows! This is the One he has been waiting for. The long wait is over. The search is ended. He takes the baby from the mother and holds him close. He feels not elation as much as relief. He can now rest in peace.

There are two generally known versions of Coventry Carol, the often performed 4 part version arranged by Martin Shaw, and the original 1591 version, which is only in 3 parts.Musically, I always preferred the 1591 version, with it's false relations and irregular metre. Unfortunately, when you direct a SATB choir, this is not so easily performed, and directors by default perform the Shaw arrangement. I therefore arranged the 3 part harmonisation of 1591 into 4 parts, keeping the irregular metre and false relations of the original, whilst filling in some of the harmony. The result is a version which works in 4 parts, but keeps the feel of the original 1591 setting.

I wrote this piece in 2018 to mark the 50th anniversaryof the Toronto Chamber Choir, a fine early music choir I have sung with since 1998.Using the  opening of the well-known Gregorian chant Gaudeamus omnes (and changingthe text to let us rejoice in music, Gaudeamus is a five- minute musical history tourthrough the various time periods the TCC sings. It begins with plainchant, then two-voiceorganum of the 11th-century Notre Dame school of Leonin and Perotin, followed bythree-voice hocket of a slightly later period. Then a nod to the 15th-century Dufay motetNuper rosarum flores (which the TCC has performed.) Next comes some 16th-centuryTudor music -- Byrd, say -- including some false relations and a typical English cadence.Then comes an allusion to Purcell, specifically the pleasing dissonance of the “voice of theTurtle†from My Beloved Spake. Then comes a little Bach-like fugue (or fughetta) based onthe Gaudeamus motif. Since the TCC rarely performs Classic/Romantic repertoire, wejump immediately to a jazzy ending in compound meter -- imagine Byrd meets Brubeck,based on one of my own earlier pieces for solo piano, but with elements of the Gaudeamusmelody. And all that in five minutes. Phew!

For instance, the word “minor†is set in pulsating minor triads. Also, the initials “E. B.†are sung on the pitches E and B. This composition shares similarities with music one might hear performed by a cappella groups on college campuses, such as humming and singing on neutral vowels like “Oh†and “Ah.†Elements of this piece also resemble 20th Century English choral music by William Walton and Ralph Vaughan Williams, in addition to Britten himself. Examples include abruptly distant harmonic changes, shocking cross-relations, and slow triplets that match the rhythm of the English language. Overall, A Prep-School Boy is very much in the spirit of the composer that it honors. Duration: 5:00.

The music here was composed within an English musical aesthetic, appropriate for a text by an English poet. Much of the music, especially the double choir sections, were inspired by the English choral music in the Anglican tradition. In addition to antiphonal textures, this piece employs some complex polyphony, reminiscent of the Renaissance, with a rich harmonic palette full of clusters and cross-relations. The piece ends in a dreamlike state, where the grasshopper and cricket are blurred into the overall beauty of nature. May be performed jointly as Two Keats Choruses with The Human Seasons (8086).

The texts were extracted from Hildegard's opus of more than seventy sacred poems titled Symphinia armonie celestium revelationum. Although these poems have been translated into English (more than once) and some of the translations are quite brilliant, I chose to set the original Latin texts as I felt they remained closer to Hildegard's own thoughts. The nine poems used in this cycle were selected according to their appropriateness to seasons in the Christian liturgical caldendar (thus, most of them can be sung in specific liturgical settings) and to their appropriateness to the structured plan of this cycle as well as for their sheer poetic beauty. Hildegard's poetic vocabulary was unusual and unique; she frequently used language that is not found in standard Latin liturgical texts. As with the music she composed, her poetry is highly ecstatic, vivid and rich in imagery.
