On atree stump Barny the barn owl wakes from his slumbers, winks, blinks and toowit-toowoos.Woody the little fir tree is feeling very sorry for himself, bemoaning the fact that all ofhis leafy friends have been taken by the townspeople for their Christmas festivities andeven the late arrival of Jack Frost, a most exuberant character, finds it difficult to lift ourlittle friend’s spirit with his cheerful banter. And so our fir tree resigns himself to make the best of Christmas Eve as allthe forest creatures hurry off home to prepare for the coming celebrations. However,things take a sudden turn when he overhears the fox and weasel devising a cunning planto make a pile of money, by going into the ‘Wholesale Toy Business’. Of course when others hear about the plan, Woody becomes nominated tosave Christmas and sets out on his adventure, with a little help from the Christmas Fairy,Snowy White the snowman and Gordon the Garden Gnome, along with other forestfriends. My father succumbed to lung cancer in 2007. Setting this poem helped me
through the grieving process. Bill Merideth was not a musician by trade, but did
enjoy playing the guitar every now and again. The accompaniment found in the
opening section represents some of the chords that he would strum in his recliner
after a hard week of work.
As the piece progresses, the accompaniment becomes more complex representing
the extensive chemotherapy that may have extended my father's life, but certainly
changed him. Finally, as the text brings us closer to death in the final stanza, the
accompaniment is now absent, representing my father's last days in hospice where
he could no longer care for himself.
I certainly believe in the healing power of music and hope that this setting brings
comfort and peace to you as it continues to do so for me.

Having completed and published here a 3-part setting of Arabia's Magi sought Him and Ubi est, I came back to the computer a few months later to be reminded that I had started the project with a 4-part (SATB) setting of Ubi est? I therefore reverse-engineered an SATB setting of Arabia's Magi to complete this short Epiphany set using my original English words for the first anthem and the Latin words of Matthew's Gospel (Ch.2, v2) for the second. Lasting around a couple of minute or so altogether, and with nothing to trap the unwary singer, these are ideal either in a Lessons and Carols service (which extends the narrative to include the Magi), as dedicated Epiphany diptych, or for use in a concert. N.B. pages 2 & 3 are sample pages only - to save paper, please print just pages (1? &) 4-7.
