Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1349231). Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups. Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Lightâ€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn†and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.†The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer. Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of redemption of the firstborn son, Simeon takes the child into his arms and says “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace ... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.†The Nunc Dimittis is said or sung after the second lesson in evening prayer.Texts for these settings are from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Traditional Language Edition, according to the use of the Anglican Church in North America, and they are largely the texts of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1288836). “Before the day draws near its ending†is an ideal selection for a late afternoon or early evening service of worship such as Evensong (Evening Prayer). A prayer of adoration, it was written by Anglican priest, hymnodist and hymnologist John Ellerton (1826-1893) and first published in the Nantwich (Cheshire, England) Festival Book, 1880, included in the Westminster Abbey Hymn Book in 1883, and re-published in numerous other hymnals. With lyrics by Peter Davidson, Evening Snow paints the landscape and scenery of New Zealand - which can often be described as a larger and sunnier version of Scotland (my home town).. So I was keen to write music that captures both the space and surroundings of the vastness of New Zealand whilst adding a slight Scottish feel.Lyrics: So far, so late, so distant and so cold. How faint the mountains in the fading day. North of the waters, snow down to the shore. South of the waters, stone fields, storm blown thorns. Snow in the dusk now, and night winds that move. Over vast waters to the farthest stars.

Frost referred to the poem as his “best bid for remembrance.†It was published, along with other celebrated poems, including “Fire and Ice†and “Nothing Gold Can Stay,†in his collection “New Hampshire†in 1923. I intended the slow repeating tone cluster chords in the last section as a solemn meditation on death. English.Although I had already set separate Latin versions of both the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, this is the first time I’ve made a setting in English of both texts for use at Evensong. I have often attended Evensong in the Cambridge college chapels: it’s a service whose meanings and spirituality are quite different from any other, and it has its own special atmosphere. Evensong’s coupling of Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis texts is fascinating: the exuberant celebration of the former contrasts so marvellously with the intimate reflections of the latter. In my Evening Canticles I have tried to make the most of that contrast. The Magnificat is forceful, replete with sprung rhythms, polymeter, and bright harmonies showing off the brilliance of the choir. Some use is made (especially near the opening) of free rhythms in which every singer performs a passage at their own speed, creating a spray of sound. The Nunc Dimittis, on the other hand, is predominantly clear and transparent, even austere, allowing the singers to shape melodic lines with expression and lyricism, as befits the text. Published by Ron James Anderson (A0.965554). Evening Prayer is somewhat in the style of a chorale prelude, with its flowing accompaniment and simple melody. The form divides neatly into two distinct sections-the first in F major, and the second in Bb major. The F major section represents our earthly life. Even though God’s peace is present throughout (the flowing accompaniment), the words speak of the strife and hardship of our time on Earth. While we are here on Earth, we tend to believe that this life is all there is (that F major will continue to the end). But at the point in the music where the text says and our work is done, ending on a D major chord, we find ourselves in a strange place between life and the afterlife; the moment of death itself. After this comes an a cappella section in Bb major, which represents our life in Heaven. The F major life merely served as a dominant preparation for the Bb major afterlife! (Actually, I think we should call eternity life, and our earthly life pre-life). The piece ends with the same flowing passages found in the beginning of the piece, this time in Bb major.
