In the first chapter of Paul’s second letter to Timothy, verses 1-10, we observe the intimate relationship that exists, between a spiritual father and his son… I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. In Chapter two we also witness Paul’s commissioning Timothy to entrust to faithful men all that he was taught by the Apostle, that they then may be able to teach others in the same way also. While the elder Paul is now in prison and bound in chains, he is nonetheless empowered by the Holy Spirit to encourage and exhort Timothy to share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ, for the sake of the Gospel. Though Paul is bound in chains, he declares to Timothy the word of God is not bound! Endurance for Paul serves only one purpose, the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.In verse 11, Paul supports his statements by inserting another known 1st century Hymn to Christ, which brings us to our fifth anthem, For If We Died with Him. The text-or lyrics-of this hymn are even bracketed (or indented) in the NKJV Bible, suggesting the hymnic setting. The proposition of the text is quite clear; if we died with Christ, then we shall also live eternally with Christ. If we endure in the faith, then we shall also reign eternally with Christ. However, there is an insertion of 'Law' here, with a dire warning that the opposite is also true: If we deny Christ, resist, and refuse His beckoning and free invitation to salvation, then He will also deny us. Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:31-23). Thus, the stage has been set for the fifth anthem. The piece is composed for SATB a cappella. The key is F Major. The opening phrase, This is a trustworthy saying, is in ¾ time, where a series of triplets are sung three times each (the Trinitarian opening motif). The meter then shifts to 2/4 with a lovely, distinctive unison melody for the opening phrase, For if we died with Him, we shall also live with Him. Soon after, when the lyrics shift to the words, If we deny Him, He will also deny us, the song drops into the relative minor key (F minor). The melody in this passage is haunting, and sends a clear warning signal to the listener to pay heed to what is being sung. When the text then transitions from if we are faithless, He remains faithful, however, the key shifts back to F Major in a new (dance-like) rhythm for the final verse, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. A coda is inserted in the final phrase where the triplet pattern is recapitulated (This is a trustworthy saying) and the sopranos ascend to a high F singing the lyrics, we shall live, for He remains faithful! to triumphantly end the piece.

Dies irae, is one of the most famous melodies of the Gregorian Chant, and was traditionally ascribed to Thomas of Celano (d 1260), but now is usually attributed to an unknown Franciscan of that period. The piece is based upon the prophet, Zephaniah 1:14-16, a reflection upon the final judgment.Many have caviled about the depressing nature of the opening verses, but while the piece is certainly sobering, there is a note of hope as well later in the text. Judgment, which is eternal, is indeed a fearsome prospect for all who have fallen short of the Glory of God. For those who believe in the Christian faith, as sinners, there is grace to be found through Jesus Christ as our Savior of all mankind.Dies irae, written for SSAATTBB, piano and bass drums, is a powerful and gripping rendition of the day of wrath! Songs for the Journey outlines and explores similar themes as the traditional Latin Requiem - love, faith, mortality, surrender to an eternal will, etc. - but in a less ecclesiastical framework, with poems and texts drawn from a variety of sources. In assembling the texts, words of a particularly personal nature were chosen to echo Fauré's intent. The musical style of More Love is simple and direct and the message is positive and affirming, making it appropriate for a variety of performance settings. Duration: 3:15.

Written in December of 2020 for Be near me when my light is low, a collaborative Requiem by the composers of Inversion Ensemble (a conductor-composer collaborative based in Austin, Texas), the Offertory movement text is a modern English rendition of the Offertory (“Domine Jesu Christe†and “Hostias et preces tibi, Domineâ€) from the traditional Latin Requiem Mass. The Offertory is introduced by a light, flowing sixteenth note pattern in the righthand of the piano that is rhythmically repetitive and meditative. The voices then appear in unison at first, gradually beginning to divide into harmony as the piece progresses until at the word death they fall back into a stark, unaccompanied unison. The Archangel Michael appears in the section that follows, leading the souls of the faithful to eternal light as the music crescendos and moves through an accelerando, ending on a triumphant C major chord on the final repetition of eternal light. A motive of assurance that this light is promised to the faithful for all eternity is presented in E-flat major, a motive that will reappear in the finale of the piece. The flowing sixteenth notes and harmonic shifts of the first section return at Sacrifices and praises we offer you, O Lord. The movement concludes with a fugue in the victorious key of C major, once again offering comfort to Christ's faithful ones through the assurance of heavenly light for all eternity.

This piece was one of those that wrote itself. After visiting the concentration camp, Buchenwald, in Germany, I felt I had to write something as a memorial piece for the victims of that camp. The english text of Agnus Dei came across as the perfect text to pair up with the prayer for the dead. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace. and Grant unto them eternal rest, O God. And let perpetual light shine upon them. And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God the Father, rest in peace. Provided the textual roadway for the music to be built upon. .
