Choral Choir,Choral (SATB divisi) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1308788 Composed by Charles Tenet. Arranged by Tobi Crawford. Jazz. 11 pages. Tobi Crawford #898034. Published by Tobi Crawford (A0.1308788). *Purchase 10 copies to perform this piece with your ensemble of any size*Purchase the instrumental pack (bass and drum part) here: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/product/beyond-the-sea-instrumental-pack-only-22605052.htmlThis arrangement came to me over a number of weeks in a very organic way that began with the ostinato piano figure that prevails throughout the piece. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.701457). An original hymn with text by Kathryn Hales below.YouTube video: https://youtu.be/w68JlvntMjcI did not see the vision, Nor dream a prophet’s dream, I only saw the barren desert Stretch forth upon the scene. I was not there when Brigham’s cane Touched the virgin ground Naming the spot the Lord had shown Where a temple would be found. I did not hear the Lord’s own voice As over ocean waves I tossed, Nor spared the death of loved ones dear As the vast plains I crossed. I only felt the Holy Spirit Telling me the work was true, So I obeyed the prophetic words Until my trek was through. I helped dig the rocky soil Before the foundation was laid Then with shovel filled the gaping hole Before Johnston’s army stayed. I did not see the temple’s spires I only saw the walls, I only shaped the granite stones With hammer, chisel, maul. I coaxed oxen through the mud To move stones down a mountain side, I watched our leaders grow old in years, No temple finished before they died. Now soon I too will join them Though I’ve labored oh so long, I’ll not see the rising spires Or sing praises in Hosanna song. I’m just a common earthly man, A laborer in a cause so great, To generations yet unborn, I’m not one you’ll appreciate. Through the years I’ve toiled and sweat, Shared blood and grief and tears, Obeyed the prophet’s call to serve Listened in faith, not fear. Please do not take for granted As you walk through these carved doors, Or hear the echo of carpenters From stairs or roof or floors The love and work that went into Many years of toil and prayer, Feel our spirits in the halls As you enter there. Though the structure’s end I’ll not see, To others who this path may trod, Go forth with diligence and faith Till we finish the work of God.

Ruler of Land and Sea (The United States Coast Guard Hymn)

Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1465870 Composed by James F. Linzey and George Elvey. Chamber,Classical,Patriotic,Religious,Sacred. 4 pages. Military Bible Association #1044467. Published by Military Bible Association (A0.1465870). History of the United States Coast Guard and the Coast Guard HymnIn 1915 the United States Congress formed the United States Coast Guard (USCG) when it combined the Revenue Cutter Service with the Life-Saving Service. The Coast Guard became the sole maritime arm of the United States Armed Forces with the purpose of saving people in danger at sea and enforcing America’s maritime laws. In 1939, the Coast Guard assumed responsibility for the Lighthouse Service and maintenance of aids to maritime navigation. In 1946 the Coast Guard assumed oversight of the Bureau of Marine Inspection and Navigation, including merchant marine licensing and merchant vessel safety. And in 1967, the Coast Guard assumed the administration of bridges over navigable waterways. The Coast Guard serves under the Department of Homeland Security in peacetime, but under the Department of the Navy in war. Missions include protecting the environment, and securing the nation by enforcing Federal laws on the high seas, on the nation's coastal waters, and in the nation’s inland waterways. At one time, under its former name, the Coast Guard was the only Unted States Armed Force at sea. On August 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the Tariff Act, providing funds to finance the construction of ten ships to enforce Federal tariff and trade laws. Throughout much of its history, the Coast Guard used verse one of the Navy Hymn in its chapel services, because it did not have its own hymn. So, on June 18, 2024, hymn writer James F. Linzey, who dubbed the Coast Guard as the “Ruler of Land and Sea,” since it patrolled the shores and the seas, felt inspired to write the United States Coast Guard hymn. He felt that a score that matched the majesty of the Navy Hymn would be appropriate. Therefore, he chose “Diademata” by Elvey. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

The City In the Sea: Choral Tone Poem

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1074352 Composed by Stanley M Hoffman. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 32 pages. Stanleymhoffman.com #678653. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1074352). PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality†to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. INSTRUMENTATION 2 Flutes (2. doubles on Piccolo) 2 Oboes (2. doubles on English Horn) 2 Bb Clarinets 2 Bassoons 2 F Horns 2 C Trumpets 2 Trombones Tuba Timpani Percussion (Gong, Bass Drum, Chimes, Glockenspiel) Harp Strings DURATION 13:00 Stanley M. SATB choir, flute and piano (ad lib.) - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.7540-E Composed by Derek Healey. Instrument part. 9 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #7540-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.7540-E). English. These songs are dedicated to William Osborne. The title Three Sacred Songs: was given to these pieces rather than the more usual terms anthem or motet because of the strongly secular presence in the texts. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

Good length for an anthem, interesting and idiomatic use of flute and harp, nice mix of beautiful melodic passages and crunchy bits!A Setting of Philippians 2:5-11 from New Revised Standard VersionFor SATB chorus, flute, and clà rsach (Scottish lever harp) or harp or pianoDuration approximately 5:00 The Letter of Paul to the Philippians 2:5-11 (NRSV)*Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death - even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. *New Revised Standard Version Bible, copyright © 1989 National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. Used by permission. All rights reserved.Composed by Adrienne Inglis in 2014 and premiered in 2014 in Austin, Texas, by the Westminster Presbyterian Church Sanctuary Choir, In Heaven and on Earth for SATB chorus, flute, and clà rsach, draws inspiration from the tune Love is the Cause of my Mourning from The Caledonian Pocket Companion Book 1, p. 27. The piece opens with the tune altered to G mixolydian mode. As the word exploited appears, a sinister-sounding E flat enters the harmony. Open octaves between soprano and bass show the emptying, followed by a shift to E phrygian mode with the word slave. Several dissonances emerge as the narrative gets darker. The flute and clà rsach represent chaos or hell with an aleatoric interlude of extended techniques involving tongue rams, flutter tonguing, multiphonics, spoken syllables, and lever glissandi. The harp then joyfully proclaims the new tonality of G major in a fanfare to introduce the text of praise and exaltation. The original source tune returns harmonically restored to G major.

Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1465866 Composed by James F. Linzey and Lowell Mason. 21st Century,Chamber,Patriotic,Religious,Sacred. 4 pages. Military Bible Association #1044463. Published by Military Bible Association (A0.1465866). The History of the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps HymnOn November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution to establish the Continental Marines. is marked the formation of the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps was provided two battalions with a fleet. But the Treaty of Paris in April 1783 ended the Marine Corps along with the Revolutionary War. It was later permanently re-established on July 11, 1798. Since then the United States Marine Corps has been involved in the War of 1812, defending Washington in Bladensburg, Maryland, fighting for Andrew Jackson against the British in New Orleans, and fighting in the Mexican War (1846-1848) in which US Marines fought all the way to the Halls of Montezuma, Mexico City. The Marines served in the Civil War (1861-1865), the Spanish-American War (1898), the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902), the Boxer Rebellion in China (1900), and World War I. The Marines were later involved in World War II, the Korean conflict beginning in 1950, and the Vietnam conflict, beginning in 1965. By the 1970s, the Marines were securing NATO, and later were involved in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm (1990s), Somalia (1992), Operation Enduring Freedom (2001), the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2002), and in various conflicts since then. Since the inception of the Marine Corps in 1775,about 70,000 Marines have been killed in action. James Linzey served as a chaplain for the Marines in training at Fort Lee, Virginia, and as a contract chaplain at the Airman-Marine Memorial Chapel at MCAS Miramar from 2016-2019. While at Miramar, he gave leadership seminars to the Marines on the Battle of Midway. He is one of ten children of World War II hero, the late Navy Captain Stanford E. Linzey, Jr., CHC, USN (Ret.), who survived the sinking of the USS Yorktown (CV-5) in the Battle of Midway as a sailor, and later served with the Marines in Okinawa as a chaplain. Since the Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy, it has used the Navy hymn in chapel services. What is called “The Marine’s Hymn” cannot be sung in chapel services, because it is not a song of praise. As a fighting march, its author called it a hymn in name only. So, in commemoration of the United States Marine Corps, hymn writer James F. Linzey wrote the United States Marine Corps Hymn, “Serving for Thee.” He set it to the tune of Bethany, which was written by Lowell Mason in 1841. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

Published by Shelton Ridge Love (A0.779348). Arranged for SATB choir with piano duet (one piano, four hand) accompaniment, this majestic arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner is perfect for every American patriotic concert or celebration. After a fanfare opening, the audience is invited to participate in the pledge to the flag and the first stanza. The choir then sings the lesser-known second stanza, concluding with a triumphant coda.At this time, the companion recording includes only digitized voices, so the lyrics for the entire arrangement are included below. (Lyrics by Francis Scott Key)America! America!God shed his grace on thee!O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.O say, does that star-spangled banner yet waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?O thus be it ever when free men shall standBetween their loved homes and the war's desolation!Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the head'n-rescued landPraise the pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must when our cause it is just,And this be our motto: In God is our trust! And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall waveO'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!Ah! Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1262362 Composed by Sally Whitwell. 21st Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 17 pages. Sally Whitwell #855402. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1262362). On the morning of 2 March 2020, I finished writing the first draft of this song. It was the same morning that the New South Wales Rural Fire Service announced that for the first time since July 2019, the state was free of active bush and grass fires. At the time it felt quite euphoric. We’d been through a lot. Little did we know what was coming just a few days from then, when the Covid19 global pandemic reached our shores. It’s a virus that would kill millions across the world, and disable millions more, long term. It forced us, globally, into a kind of reckoning the like of which we had never experienced before. Non pharmaceutical controls like lockdowns, mask mandates, social distancing and ventilation standards were employed to keep us safe from this airborne virus, whilst scientists worked round clock to develop vaccines and treatments.Technically, the declaration of a pandemic is still active, but governments and people have somehow decided for themselves that it is all over. No one takes any precautions any more. Governments have stopped reporting statistics. People who know they are infected are going about their business with no thought for others. Meanwhile, many of the immune-compromised, the disabled, the vulnerable, are unable to safely leave their homes and engage in activities out in the world. I know this, because I am a carer for a vulnerable person. What this whole exercise has taught me is that people in the world are actually much less kind than I thought they were. Humans do not really care for each other. People attack me for wearing a mask, tell me that I’m virtue signalling and that I look ridiculous (as if I care how I look). I’ve asked questions about workplace Covid safety and been informed that it’s “a bit rich†that I’m asking at all, when everything is now safe. A friend’s diagnosed Long Covid symptoms were cruelly minimised or completely dismissed “Oh, it’s not Covid. How old are you? In your forties? It’s your hormones, it’s the menopause.†The fatal combination of sheer selfishness, rampant misinformation and DISinformation continues, whilst people waltz around spreading a deadly virus with no thought for the grief that will undoubtedly ensue. It boils down to this: if we want to continue as a species and to have a planet on which to reside, we have to stop with the Self Care and start with the Community Care. A choir is the perfect instrument for expressing these notions, through the unique power of the massed first person plural. My wish for this piece is that it spurs performer and listener alike into some kind of action. Please consider the effect your actions have on others, and on the planet, and make any changes necessary, however inconvenient or difficult they are. Otherwise, there’s really no point.Sally Whitwell 11 July 2023.

Guide us to sacred space where there is no shame. When fear, our enemy, threatens calm within, Reach forth thy mighty arm; shelter us from sin. Father, increase our faith as the thorns of life Cause us to doubt thy word; keep us safe from strife. When pain disguises peace, when sore trials loom, Lend us thy constant care rising from all gloom. Father, increase our faith; turn our trust to Thee. When conflict frightens all, find us on our knees. Shield us from enemies when they come too close. Share thy protecting hands; guard us from all foes. Father, increase our faith; let us trust thy love. Give comfort endlessly ‘til we meet above. Father, we honor Thee and thy holy Son. Help us increase our faith so we can be one.

The texts are full of a kind of raw energy, swashbuckling attitude, and profundity of heart and commitment characteristic of those settlers west of the Hudson. I had also looked at the more erudite essays of Coleridge-Taylor, Thoreau, and Emerson but chose the rougher stanzas because the primitive voices, the pioneers, were profound, simply in the way they expressed the nature of their experiences. The first piece, 'Comin’ to Town,' is about cowboys after a month on the range—bawdy, rowdy, and raucous. The second, 'Beneath These Alien Stars,' is about the bonding of the human spirit to the land. The third piece, 'A Hoopla,' depicts a barn dance and vocalists circle ‘round the instruments, stomp, clap, and generally perform with abandon, vigor, and boisterousness. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.926666 Composed by Michael A. Morizio. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 15 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588437. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926666). In 1 John, we witness the Apostle (that Jesus loved) writing as the elder statesman of the faith in the last third of the 1st century. In chapter two, verse seven, John refers to the church as beloved and proceeds by telling them of a new commandment. He says (verses 9-11), Whoever loves his brother, abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. From this text, John immediately segues into verses 12-14, to affirm for his followers that as far as they are concerned, there is no darkness in them for they are the children of the Light to whom he was earlier referring. John achieves this transition by employing yet another 1st century Hymn to Christ, which I have entitled, Through His Name. This anthem is an affirmation of the faith, first to the little children, then to the fathers, and then to the young men. What is very interesting is that the first stanza is written in the present tense (I am writing to you) but the second stanza, with very similar wording, is written in the past tense (I have written to you). It’s as if to say, you heard the Gospel message before, and you believed, and I am writing it to you again, so that you may continue to believe.

Oh, receive my true submission; I approach Thee rev’rently. Merciful Savior and Redeemer, I implore thy holy grace. As I pardon faults of others, let me feel thy sure embrace. Fill my eyes with adoration for thy children ev’rywhere. As I kneel in rags and sackcloth, lend me thy redeeming care. Merciful Savior and Redeemer, teach me of another’s heart. Let me offer sweet forgiveness; give me kindness to impart. Cast aside my knowing errors as I render grace to all. I will give my true devotion as I carry out this call. Merciful Savior and Redeemer, let my anxious heart be stilled. Granting perfect peace to others causes mine to ever fill. Giving mercy is a payment for my aching, famished soul. As I gain thy sacred vision, I will help make others whole.

Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1495196). Jesus Christ the Apple Tree is the commonly used title for a poem published under the heading Christ compared to an Apple-tree in the August 1761 issue of The Spiritual Magazine, a London periodical for Calvinist Baptists.Above the poem in the publication are words of its author:Gentlemen,Having spent some of my vacant time in the composition of short pieces of Divine Poetry, have sent you the following, by way of specimen; which, if thought worthy of a place in your magazine, shall communicate the others regularly. I am your well-wisher and constant reader, R.H.R.H. is today believed to most likely be the Rev. Richard Hutchins, a Calvinist Baptist clergyman then serving in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire. The poem's first known appearance in a hymnal, and in America, was in 1784 in Divine Hymns, or Spiritual Songs: for the use of Religious Assemblies and Private Christians compiled by Joshua Smith, a lay Baptist minister from New Hampshire. Because of its popularity in New England churches thereafter, it has often been wrongly attributed to an anonymous early American poet or to Smith. The poem may be an allusion to the apple tree in Song of Solomon 2:3 (As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste), which has been interpreted as a metaphor for Jesus. It also alludes to other descriptions of the tree of life in both the Old and New Testaments. Primitive yet profound, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree has been set to music by many composers, including a very popular setting by Elizabeth Poston (1905-1987). This new setting for unaccompanied SATB voices captures the rustic quality of the text with a rising-and-falling folksong-like melody, attractively harmonized. Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.926661 Composed by Michael A. Morizio. Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 15 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588399. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926661). In the first chapter of Paul’s letter to the Colossians, we discover the next known Hymn to Christ right after his introductory passages, beginning at the 15th verse. Paul opens this letter with a blessing, then immediately flows to one of the 1st century hymns, which I have called, The Icon of the Invisible God. The lyrics of this hymn are declarative, bold and illuminating as to whom the Christ figure is-the icon, the very image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. The text makes it abundantly clear that Jesus is the authority; that He was there before all things, that He created all things, and that through Him all things hold together. This anthem is composed for SATB choir with Pipe Organ accompaniment. The meter is set to 6/8 time, with a rhythm tempo of Totally Alive; which is one actual definition of the word Holy. The anthem starts at a good clip (♪=100). The key is G Major, with an incidental and occasional flatted 5th (Dâ™) as a surprise-landing befitting to the text presented, as if to say, This is so amazing, how can it be? The flatted 5th gives the piece it's own identity and causes the listener to stand up and take notice whenever it occurs. When the hymn's lyrics glide into the all-important resolution, having made peace through the blood of the cross, the song retards and lands on a surprising musical cadence, the sixth chord (E Major). In this piece, the pipe organ is boldly featured as it supports and under girds the musical line, occasionally trumpeting its own victorious motifs and adding some contrapuntal elements, such as this duplet motif, in the pedal line. The final lyrics about Christ having reconciled everything to Himself, whether things on the earth or in the heavens, finish the piece with a great, ‘High-Church’ choral ending.

Published by Nottingham Scores (A0.1240133). Mystery of the Hills is an S.A.T.B. choral work describing the wonder of the Flint Hills, a region in East Central Kansas.  I’m not a native Kansan, but whenever I drive through this area, I am enthralled by the infinite sense of expanse and gently rolling terrain. Geologists believe there was an inland seaway that covered central North America starting 290 million years ago. Over time, alternating layers of hard limestone and softer shale rocks formed. It is believed erosion caused the varied elevations of terrain, unique to the slopes of the Flint Hills. These surface layers of limestone and chert prevented the settler’s ability to farm, which in turn preserved the integrity of the soil. Today, the prairie grasses can reach 10 feet tall if not managed.  The rich grasses are prime for feeding livestock. This music attempts to provide images of traveling through the Flint Hills today, while imagining changes over eons of time, due to weather and eventually, human interaction.  Generally, the upper voices provide the imagery and some history, while the lower voices describe a bedrock foundation.  Describing the rock foundation found in the Flint Hills is also a metaphor for human strife and struggle as man, among living flora and fauna, interact with the area. The vocal ranges and harmonies are accessible for young ensembles, whether in development or with years of experience.

The Ballad of Flora and James

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.887673 Composed by Cat McGill. Folk. Octavo. 5 pages. Cat McGill #3508909. Published by Cat McGill (A0.887673). The Ballad of Flora and James is a re-working of a traditional broadside ballad, the original of which can be found in the archives at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The original tells the story of Flora, a young girl who dresses as a man in order to follow her boyfriend to sea - but this modern day version has roles reversed, and it's James who joins the war to be with Flora.Cat's clever arrangement brings this story firmly in to the modern era, and affectionately pokes fun at the 'traditional' gender roles often featured in this type of song. It's a hearty song; funny, and fun to sing, and suitable for all ages. There is NO MINIMUM ORDER quantity on this arrangement, because I arrange all my songs to be taught by ear. I've taught this one myself to my community choir and they have really enjoyed singing it - I hope you do too!

The Goodness of the Lord (Vocals and Piano)

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.958123 Composed by Adam Judd. Christian,Gospel,Sacred. Octavo. 8 pages. Adam Judd #3129737. Published by Adam Judd (A0.958123). The Goodness of the Lord grew out of the striking statement of faith found in Psalms 27: 13. While much of the psalm indicates that its author was dealing with some serious life issues, in this verse the psalmist affirms a trust in the Lord’s help: not salvation for the next life, but rescue and shelter within the present lifetime. This piece attempts to portray such trust in God during times of struggle and pain.At least two soloists are necessary, but the solo parts may be divided among more singers if desired to suit your ensemble. The piece may be performed successfully using only chorus, soloists, and piano; however, there is also an orchestration available (S0.249231) for trumpet, tenor sax, guitar, and upright bass. Be warned that the tenor sax part is advanced-but someone who regularly handles musical theater woodwind books should have no problem. Including a drum set is recommended if you have someone who can find his or her way through the piece and enhance its gospel flavor; there is no written drum set chart, because the person you would want to play this piece with you won’t need it.Enjoy!
