This part is a fugal composition with a Baroque-like style (SATB) (04:06).This composition reflects the mystery of the Incarnation of the Lord (first movement), the joy of Mother Mary after giving birth to the Lord while remembering the words of St. Elizabeth (second movement), and the exclamation of the faithful singing Alleluia continuously (third movement).This composition is accessible and suitable for student, school, or university choir, especially for Christmas Concert or Christmas Recital. The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. This arrangement of the John Coltrane classic, which pays tribute to legendary jazz bassist and Miles Davis compatriot Paul Chambers, provides an exciting introduction, statement of the theme in varied textures, a challenging (optional) soli, and room for lots of energetic drum solos. Following an introductory figure reminiscent of Miles Davis and Victor Feldman’s well-known Seven Steps to Heaven collaboration, the arrangement features two optional background choruses to keep the blowing fresh and interesting. After the improvisation, the drums and piano drop out, sending off a challenging, optional soli (18 second mark in demo) featuring a doubled, walking vocal and acoustic bassline. As this section concludes, the acoustic bass drops out and the drums re-enter, propelling a fugal statement of the melody (25 second mark in demo). Following a return to the head, the arrangement modulates upward by whole step to its exciting conclusion. Piano, bass, and drums read off the included composite rhythm section part. The arrangement, which makes prominent use of sharp ninth chords during the head, is a great teaching tool for basses and altos in any vocal jazz ensemble! Chanson d'Amour (sometimes referred to as The Ra-Da-Da-Da-Da Song) is a popular piece written by the American singer, songwriter and producer, Wayne Shanklin. In 1958 Shanklin had suggested the song to a California lounge circuit duo Art and Dotty Todd. They liked the song and produced a demo recording, which was later released as a single by Era Records. Then, almost 20 years later, in 1976, the vocal jazz quartet The Manhattan Transfer came across a demo on cassette and decided to record a remake of Chanson d'Amour for their Coming Out album. The track featured Janis Siegel singing lead with an Edith Piaf sound.Whilst overlooked in the United States in its single release, Manhattan Transfer's version became a hit across Europe in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Norway and Switzerland. In the English-speaking world it was a chart topper in the UK and Ireland as well as in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.The song had become Manhattan Transfer's most widespread international success.This arrangement is available in six choral versions – SA, SSA, SSAA, SSATB with piano and SSAA, SSATB a cappella

It was premiered in February 2010 under the baton of Robert Istad by the John Alexander Singers. The first movement, Liquor and lacquer, sets Witter Bynner's Opus 6 and depicts infatuation through flighty changes of meter and sudden shifts of mode. The second, entitled An amethyst remembrance and based on a poem by Emily Dickinson, is built around a false cadence on the words 'T will keep. It is regretful, slowly building to an anguished climax and wistfully fading away. Finally, Kinsfolk takes Sidney Lanier's A Song of Love as its text. It is both a lighthearted reflection on the paradoxical and complementary relationship between love and pain, and a pining for love. The first two stanzas of Kinsfolk pit the tenors and basses, who deliver the first stanza’s melody, against the sopranos and altos, who answer in the second stanza with the same melody in a key a tritone away from that of the first. The third stanza is a fugato on the same melody, culminating in a fervid fortissimo. Duration approx. 6:30.
