Elements of O'Carolan's 'Inisheer' are woven into the melody. Lyric A Song With No Tune The stories they tell in the Town of Athlone, would gladden the heart of a man made of stone. I joined in with them freely, until it was Spring, then I was off, like a hawk on the wing - searching for fortune - and something to sing. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. The pipers are proud in Kildare and Athy; there's no better music found under the sky. But, one bright Summer's evening, I left them behind; put my feet to the road and I followed them blind - searching for fortune - and what I might find. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. The fiddlers are famous from Bantry to Cork. The rake of their reels would make the lame walk. But still, at the close of a fine Autumn day, I packed up my bags and I went on my way - searching for fortune but finding low pay. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. Far up the west coast, in Aran and Clare, there's harpers to bring you a magical aire. I listened, enthralled, till the Winter came on, then pulled up my boots - and soon I was gone - searching for fortune for still I had none. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. I rested, by chance, at the close of the day, by a small rounded hill, where I happened to stray. And there, as the drowsiness over me stole, I dreamed of a woman with eyes black as coal - And the fortune she held was the song of my soul. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522059). This is a dramatic and attractive setting of the traditional text by Nahum Tate (1652-1715). Tate was an Anglo-Irish poet, hymn writer and lyricist, who became Poet Laureate in 1692. He’s best known for The History of King Lear, his 1681 adaptation of Shakespeare's play. He also wrote the libretto for Henry Purcell's timeless opera, Dido and Aeneas. The traditional melody of While Shepherds Watched is well-known, but this new setting brings in a wealth of new musical material. This is a tuneful work and is sure to be enjoyed by your singers and audiences alike. It is in 2/2 time throughout but journeys through several contrasting keys. It’s also available for SSA and SAT choirs with keyboard accompaniment.  There’s an a cappella section in the middle and more suited to experienced singers. The piano part is not difficult and should be within the reach of any competent pianist. MacLeod’s tune evolved into today’s “The Skye Boat Songâ€, and has since morphed into the Theme Song for the popular television series – Outlander. MacLeod’s melody originally had lyrics by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton (1859-1935) published in 1884. Stevenson disliked the sentimentality of Boulton’s words so much he composed his own in 1892. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 3:05+.

This original song tells a fairy tail in the style of a Celtic folk song. Both the story and the tune are wholly original and were composed as part of a music production class that Mark participated in during the spring of 2022. This song tells the story of a young boy's adventure in the woods, his skepticism towards what the old folks say, and the results of his failure to listen to them. This piece by Mark R Lewis is arranged for SATB ensemble. All parts get the melody at some point and there are several duets between voices parts throughout the piece. Additionally the accompaniment voices switch between homophonic harmonies and arpeggiating chords several times for increased complexity and interest. The instrumental parts consist of vibraphone, piano, bass guitar, and floor tom parts. Any mellow metallophone would be an appropriate substitute for the vibraphone and the bass guitar part can be played on almost any bass instrument. The optional floor tom could be substituted with any other lower, resonant drum available but should not be a short, sharp sound. All that said, both the vibraphone and bass guitar parts are mostly doubled in the piano or vocal lines so groups that do not have access to those instruments should still be able to perform this piece without concern. This piece is also available for Vocal Trio w/ Mixed Ensemble and the sound files sampled here are from that arrangement. Vocal Range: d minor Soprano - 1+ octave (D4 to E5) Alto - 1+ octave (A3 to D5) Tenor - 1+ octave (C3 to D4) Bass - 1+ octave (F2 to A3) Instrumental Range: Vibraphone - 1+ octave (D4 to E5) Piano - ability to reach at least an octave in both hands Bass guitar - 1+ octave (E2 to A3).

Audio sample sung (multitrack and transposed down a little) by the composer The original tune was composed with the words Eibhlin a Ruin (Ellen Aroon or Eileen Aroon) by the Irish bard Carroll O'Daly (14th Century), although it was later attributed to the 18th century Irish composer Charles Coffey (this was presumably an arrangement of the original). The words of Robin Adair itself are understood to be by Lady Caroline Keppel, who was in love with a surgeon by that name. (This seems more likely than the theory that Robert Burns wrote it, although Burns certainly knew Keppel's lyrics and made his own parodies upon the words). Some later versions of the melody contain Scotch snaps but this version follows the simplest melodic line, without the Scotch snaps - which may have been closer to O'Daly's original tune - and with quite romantic choral harmonies.
