O Love that wilt not let me go.Dr. Matheson says this hymn was written in the Manse of my former parish (Innellan, Argyleshire) one summer evening in 1882. It was composed with extreme rapidity; it seemed to me that its construction occupied only a few minutes, and I felt myself rather in the position of one who was being dictated to than of an original artist I was suffering from extreme mental distress, and the hymn was the fruit of pain. This hymn first appeared in the Church of Scotland magazine, Life and Work, in 1883. From thence it passed into the Scottish Hymnal 1884; and there set to special music by Dr. A. L. Peace. It is a beautiful and tender hymn and worthy of extensive use--John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907)This SATB arrangement by Joseph Pugh is set with classical style piano accompaniment.

Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. Although originally conceived for a large chorus with orchestral accompaniment, the setting may be performed with just organ or piano.There's a youtube video at https://youtu.be/HQwYDJRdmcc - this is an extract from the first performance in the magnificent setting of Berlin Cathedral, which was packed to capacity. The quality of both sound and picture isn't great, but it will provide you with an idea of the atmosphere and impact of the piece. The sound recording covers the whole piece, using Sibelius sounds. Authors of the song are Giorgia and Maurizio Fabrizio.This original harmonization for mixed SATB choir and piano, enhances even more the melodic and harmonic characteristics of the piece, making it even more unique and magical. The song is about a woman who reflects on a past story. A story that she herself wanted or had to close, but certainly not without regrets; What a woman I will be, if you are not with me and if I will love you more and more.... And she thinks: Strange is my fate, that brings me here…; a fate that compels her, for some reason, to reflect on her past, bringing her back to the moment in which she decided to leave away in silence. It emphasizes the concepts of pressing on, having courage, and not fearing. Difficulty: Medium (There are some independent singing sections, some notes at the top of the soprano and tenor range, and a couple spots with less typical harmonies. It is, however, not a difficult piece overall. Those who are accustomed to singing in choirs will have no trouble but will be challenged enough to enjoy the piece.) Range: The notes are within range for a somewhat experienced or serious singer. If using in a choir, you can have the higher notes sung one octave lower by those out of range, or add a harmonic note as needed. There are only a couple of instances where this might be needed. Solutions to Problems: If you have youth afraid to go on missions, this song will help them take courage and be brave. If you have adults who are faltering from fear (as all do on occasion), it is hoped this song will bolster their courage and resolve. Duration of Work: This medley is approximately 4:12 minutes long.
