Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1262362). On the morning of 2 March 2020, I finished writing the first draft of this song. It was the same morning that the New South Wales Rural Fire Service announced that for the first time since July 2019, the state was free of active bush and grass fires.At the time it felt quite euphoric. We’d been through a lot. Little did we know what was coming just a few days from then, when the Covid19 global pandemic reached our shores. It’s a virus that would kill millions across the world, and disable millions more, long term. It forced us, globally, into a kind of reckoning the like of which we had never experienced before. Non pharmaceutical controls like lockdowns, mask mandates, social distancing and ventilation standards were employed to keep us safe from this airborne virus, whilst scientists worked round clock to develop vaccines and treatments.Technically, the declaration of a pandemic is still active, but governments and people have somehow decided for themselves that it is all over. No one takes any precautions any more. Governments have stopped reporting statistics. People who know they are infected are going about their business with no thought for others. Meanwhile, many of the immune-compromised, the disabled, the vulnerable, are unable to safely leave their homes and engage in activities out in the world. I know this, because I am a carer for a vulnerable person.What this whole exercise has taught me is that people in the world are actually much less kind than I thought they were. Humans do not really care for each other. People attack me for wearing a mask, tell me that I’m virtue signalling and that I look ridiculous (as if I care how I look). I’ve asked questions about workplace Covid safety and been informed that it’s “a bit rich†that I’m asking at all, when everything is now safe. A friend’s diagnosed Long Covid symptoms were cruelly minimised or completely dismissed “Oh, it’s not Covid. How old are you? In your forties? It’s your hormones, it’s the menopause.†The fatal combination of sheer selfishness, rampant misinformation and DISinformation continues, whilst people waltz around spreading a deadly virus with no thought for the grief that will undoubtedly ensue.It boils down to this: if we want to continue as a species and to have a planet on which to reside, we have to stop with the Self Care and start with the Community Care. A choir is the perfect instrument for expressing these notions, through the unique power of the massed first person plural. My wish for this piece is that it spurs performer and listener alike into some kind of action. Please consider the effect your actions have on others, and on the planet, and make any changes necessary, however inconvenient or difficult they are. Published by Tyne Music (A0.999346). U. F. O. : Is my newest sci-fi full length modern play in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of original musicals. I wrote this specifically for the senior students of the Performing Arts. It has many leading parts for both sexes and has a hint of the 60-70 style of writing found in those musicals of the times but modern in context. The story line includes opportunities for many individual performances covering song and dance numbers, group singing, contemporary dance, dramatic interludes and strong comedy parts. This is an original story taking a humorous look at a possible visitation from our space neighbours. The story begins with the arrival of GS2, an ‘Interstellar Space Surveyor’ on its mission to map this part of the Universe. Whilst reporting its position to the home base ‘Niva’, the surveyor informs them that one of the planets (Earth) appears to have intelligent life forms. On receiving this information Niva decides to dispatch a party of college students to study this unique planet, much to the annoyance of GS2 who take umbridge at being appointed, what he calls a Galactic Nanny! Events take a dramatic turn when the surveyor is called away on an ‘emergency rescue mission’ so has to beam the students down to planet Earth, where during transmutation, they are warned not to integrate with the population. Brass & PercussionLooking for something just a bit different/reduced from the concertato form, and even easier to learn to kick off the choir season?Based on Praise the Lord Who Reigns Above this arrangement, entitled Let All Things Praise the Lord is faithful to the original including a stanza omitted in most hymnals that speaks of the choir as a battle-worthy leadership unit in worship.The text, based on Psalm 150 by English pastor Charles Wesley, was originally published in his brother, John Wesley’s Founder Collection of 1742 in conjunction the tune AMSTERDAM (which carried annotations and adaptations from a German tune). Immediately following the choir, brass, percussion and organ/keyboard fanfare, opportunity is given to the congregation to participate in the liturgy. The middle section is original music that wings the emotion/meaning of the text to a more meditative stream and back again—via a reprise of the opening fanfare—to the rousing finale with a creative descant that appears not only in Soprano/Tenor, but also (for a change) in Alto and Bass. Perhaps the most often-sung processional hymn on Palm Sunday, “Ride On, Ride On in Majesty†was written in 1820 by Anglican cleric, poet, and scholar Henry Hart Milman (1791-1868) and first  published in Reginald Heber’s Hymns Written and Adapted to the Weekly Church Service of the Year (1827). The hymn references Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem prior to his Passion, as recorded in Matthew 21:1-11.Writing for the Hymnology Archive of The Hymn Society in the US and Canada, editor Chris Fenner notes in his analysis of the text that:“This hymn ... is much less a narrative or paraphrase of the triumphal entry (Matt. 21, Mk. 11, Lk. 19, Jn. 12) than it is a forward-looking hymn pointing from the palms to the cross to [Jesus’] ascended position on the throne. The triumphal entry itself is a fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9 (‘Behold, your king is coming to you . . . humble and mounted on a donkey’). The recurring opening line is possibly an allusion to Psalm 45:4 (‘in thy majesty ride prosperously’). “Some hymnological commentators connect this hymn with the idea of the great reversal in Philippians 2:5-12, where we find the Christ who humbled himself in a crucified death, later to be exalted, name above all names, to which every knee will bow. As Canadian hymn scholar Stanley Osborne observed, this hymn’s poetic strength is in its exploration of that duality:'Objective, robust, confident, and stirring, it possesses that peculiar combination of tragedy and victory which draws the singer into the very centre of the drama. It is this which gives the hymn its power and its challenge.'In this arrangement for SATB voices and organ, Milman’s text is set to the 15th-century English ballad, “Deo Gratias†(aka The Agincourt Carol), with the refrain Ride on in majesty!†following each verse.©Copyright 2024 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP).
