(It should be noted this tune is heavily influenced with King Oliver’s Camp Meeting Blues of 1923.) A special nod goes to Ms Adelaide Hall whose musical stylings gave birth to the wonderful ethereal (and very sensual) counter-melody descant. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #4405502. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522224). My Song Is Love Unknown is a known best as a hymn by Samuel Crossman, written in 1664. It is predominantly used as a hymn for Good Friday usually in a setting by John Ireland who evidently composed it over lunch one day. This is a completely new SATB setting of Crossman’s wonderful text by Colin Kirkpatrick. In this setting there are opportunities for alto and tenor solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there is an a capella section in the middle. The highest note in the soprano part is one A flat above the treble staff. This is an accessible arrangement with rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines. It is sure to be a success at Easter occasions. Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142) and A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866. In the audio sample, soprano is played by the flute, alto by the oboe, tenor by the clarinet and bass by the bassoon.

A song of struggle between faith and fear as a storm threatens to engulf all in its path. Verses of storm are interspersed with verses of calm, as the loving heart struggles to ease the desperate mind with the notion of there being no reason to fear, reinforcing the faith that ‘love will hold through blood and tears’. The music and text express this idea with an almost surreal detachment of the peaceful heart from the surrounding storm during each return of the verse of calm, amidst the increasing tension in the verses of storm, as if in temporary respite within the eye of the storm. In such a meditative state, one can even begin to admire the storm in awe of the beauty of the sheer force of nature. It culminates with the eventual defeat of the loving heart and a resignation to the likely fate to be met by the end of the storm. Yet, the end is not met with the fear that had threatened to engulf the desperate minds, but with the final, strongest, statement in faith that ‘love goes on past life on earth’.Duration: Approx. 4:30minLanguage: English2017 Choral Contest Entry

This attractive light arrangement uses divisi sopranos at one point and also includes an a cappella section. It’s a tuneful arrangement, easy on the ear and not especially difficult. Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are My Song is Love Unknown (Text by Samuel Crossman 1624-1683) and Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142). In the audio sample, soprano is played by the flute, alto by the oboe, tenor by the clarinet and bass by the bassoon.

First performance, Cork, Ireland, 2 May 2003.Its intention is to recreate the atmosphere of the open-air festivity in an Irish small village during its festival day, from the point of view of a Basque musician who never visited that country and only knows its music.The work has four different parts: 1- In the first one, people are invited to join the festival. 2- In the second one, women sing the Ave Maria during the religious celebration. 3- Dancing makes the people happy and it is an excuse to meet. 4- In the last part, when the feast comes to an end nobody wants to say goodbye.The composition’s closing text has been written by JOSUNE LÓPEZ, a component in my choir, Kanta Cantemus Korua. Miss López has tried to transmit all her love and admiration towards Ireland.* This song has been recorded on a CD in 2005 under the conduction of composer Javier Busto himself. The CD goes over 25 years of composing and contains exclusively music for mixed choirs. It is actually available at the website. Name of the CD: HONDARRIBIA… AMETSETAN.* The lyrics are in Basque language. Spanish and English translation of the text is included for those who hardly recognize Basque language. Furthermore, a small introductory guide can be found in the score for a correct Basque pronunciation.

This lovely Japanese folk song depicts spring, the season of cherry blossom; it's eagerly anticipated and everyone goes out to the parks and the countryside to breathe their fill of the magical fragrance.Originally 'Sakura' was an urban song of the Edo period of the 17th and 18th centuries. Like many eastern melodies it uses a pentatonic scale. It's often sung in international settings, as a song representative of Japan.I wrote this arrangement at a time when my choir only had a few (not very confident) Tenors and Basses, so wherever possible I put them together.Although it's presented as SATB, it's easy to see that the Ts and Bs support each other!The aim is to combine a feeling of timelessness (the sustained lines of the Ts and Bs) with a blossomy feeling of floaty weightlessness (Ss and As). Hope you enjoy singing it!

He makes a comparison between the five medlar stones and the five sorrows of his heart.
