This composition is built in form as a traditional Mass, but the text used comprises of a selection of only a few words of those usually applied in the traditional Mass movements. The text used, described in detail, is as follows:1. As Kyrie movement: Only the word ELEISON (Have Mercy On Us) 2. As Gloria movement: Only the word GLORIA (Hail)3. As Credo movement: Alternative text: Paul’s 1:13 Corinthian (on love)4. As Sanctus / Benedictus: Only the sentence: PLENI SUNT COELI ET TERRA GLORIA TUA (The Sky and the Earth are full of Thy Glory)5. As Agnus Dei: Only the sentence DONA NOBIS PACEM (Give Us Peace)The text selection is a result of the intention to concentrate on the essence and the universal character of each movement, without getting into conflict with the dogmatic parts of the original text. This is also the reason for the use of the word alternative in the title. The writing is fairly melodious and tonal, with some contemporary effects.The individual movements may also be used seperately.Duration of the whole mass lasts for about 20 minutes.The individual movements vary from 2 and a half to 7 minutes. A Selection of Christmas Songs from PIAE CANTIONES for SATB choirPIAE CANTIONES is a Swedish-Finnish manuscript, the earliest collection of songs from Scandinavia (1580). In this selection of 14 Christmas-songs from this manuscript, the arrangements are presented as found in the original, with very few and simple additions, in an effort to preserve the authenticity of the period-sound. The order of the songs, the choice of number of verses, the voice-part distribution, the noted tempi and dynamics are my own suggestions - choices intent to hopefully be in accordance to what is known on musical practices during the Medieval and Renaissance periods in Scandinavia, and indeed all-over Northern Europe. The original manuscript contained only the vocal parts and may therefore be performed a cappella, or separately, but I dare suggest that all the songs will benefit greatly and work beautifully accompanied by an early music instrumental ensemble, (ex.: lute and fidle), or an organ, to double the voice parts and improvise bridges between the songs. THE ISLES OF GREECE, for SATB choir and piano - An elegy over a long gone glorious past, on excerpts from the poem: THE ISLES OF GREECE by Lord Byron: He was an ardent lover of Greek Antiquity and made an enormous contribution to the Greek War of Independence from the 400year Ottoman rule. BYZANTINE HYMN: O THRINOS TIS ALOSEOS: Lament over the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 (after Simon Karas) arranged for soloist and SATB choirConstantinople (ΚωνταντινοÏπολη=Constantin's City), had been the capital of the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) empire from 330 until 1453, when it fell to the Ottomans. It continued then as the capital of the Ottoman empire, and has since 1930 been called Istanbul, the Turkish understanding of the sound of Greek: Stin Poli (= to the City). This Hymn survived in the Greek Orthodox Church and has both a secular and a religious character, as it records the end of the 1100 years glorious era, as well as it is lamenting the religious restrictions the Greek Orthodox Church was subjected to as a result of the Islamic Occupation. BYZANTINE HYMN: TI IPERMAHO (To the defender army leader) arranged for SATB choir and pianoDuring a siege of Constantinople in the 6th cent., and while the regular army was engaged in fighting elsewhere, the city was attacked by Avars. The women, children and seniors left there fought as best they could, but finally realized that they had to give up. As a last resort, they carried the icon of Panayia (St. Mary, always referred to as all-holy in Greek), alongside the city walls, something that produced an unexpected effect: The besiegers left! For three days the citizens participated in liturgies addressed to Her, in a hymn called AKATHISTOS YMNOS (=Non-sitting Hymn), where this tropation is central, as it is most actively still used in the Greek Orthodox Church at many other relevant services. The first part is the original, in unison, or sung by a soloist. Greece), and martyred under Roman Emperor Diocletian in ca 306. He had become a Roman army officer but was incarcerated after converting to Christianity. In prison he met with Nestor, a gladiator set out to fight the famous and feared Lyeos. Dimitrios gave Nestor his blessing who then won the fight, something that enraged Maximilian (then governor of the city and later emperor), and who then ordered the execution of both Nestor and Dimitrios.
