Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1418). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.Flight sought us out is a walking choral piece for three choirs SATB, based on a Swedish poem by Stig Dagerman, translated to English by Sven Smedberg. Initially published in 1953, the lyrics deal with a burning subject, and it is shaped musically by employing the choirs' positions and movements in relation to the natural acoustics of the room. The work was commissioned by the Naas Choral Festival in 2017, where it was premiered by local choirs conducted by Gunno Palmquist. A Swedish version, Flykten valde oss, is also available. Flight sought us out is well-suited to choirs at different levels. Choir I has the most difficult parts, while Choir III has the easiest. There is also a reduced version of the work for a SATB choir with a soloist or a small solo group in each part. David Rain, Choral Composer #696006. Published by David Rain, Choral Composer (A0.1091873). Erik Satie's Sarabande No. 1 is one of my favourite piano pieces. For a long time, I felt there was an a cappella choral piece hiding within it, in plain sight. One day I got inspired and gave it a try. Creating a choral adaptation of a piano piece has its challenges. I tried to keep faithful to Satie's original musical inspiration and created lyrics to go with my arrangement that evoke an early summer morning, one of my favourite times of the year. Several months later, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted. As dawn breaks was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon Washburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. As dawn breaks works perfectly as the opening number of this suite. Finally, my instruction to choirs is to sing as if in a painting, and indeed I invite any artists who might draw inspiration from this piece to consider creating a companion work of art to accompany it.

The true beauty of this piece lies in its functionality. The song is highly recommended for the choir that has an over abundance of female voices, and it can also be performed solely SSA, omitting the tenor and bass lines. Not only is this song an excellent learning piece for high school students, the poetic text makes it appropriate for adult choirs as well. A note from the composer: I chose to base the lyrics on the Whippoorwill for the uniqueness of this bird. The Whippoorwill is a bird that flies during the night instead of the day. They have nests on the ground instead of in trees, and the Native Americans believe that the Whippoorwill will catch a soul in flight as it is leaving the earth. Another fun fact is that John Burroughs, famous naturalist of the Burroughs Audubon Society in Kansas City, once heard a Whip-poor-will make 1,088 vocal repetitions before pausing.
