Love Alone Shall Guide Us is an a cappella, SATB piece with no divisi. The words were written in 1846 and are particularly interesting and poignant because they were written TO Edgar Allan Poe by his wife Virginia Clemm Poe (1822-1847). He never wrote a poem specifically for her, but she wrote this acrostic poem for him shortly before the end of her short and tragic life. Here are the lyrics: Ever with thee I wish to roam — Dearest my life is thine. Give me a cottage for my home And a rich old cypress vine, Removed from the world with its sin and care And the tattling of many tongues. Love alone shall guide us when we are there — Love shall heal my weakened lungs; And Oh, the tranquil hours we’ll spend, Never wishing that others may see! Perfect ease we’ll enjoy, without thinking to lend Ourselves to the world and its glee — Ever peaceful and blissful we’ll be. Virginia Poe mentions her illness when it states Love shall heal my weakened lungs because it was tuberculosis that took her life less than a year after writing these words. For modern performers, I particularly like the line Never wishing other may see; in this social media era, this is really a foreign concept!

Published by Michael E. Ropp (A0.971687). I Stand the Watch Before the Dawn is a dramatic piece for SATB choir and tenor and soprano soloists, for the season of Advent. The piece begins with the solo tenor and piano, in which the tenor plays the part of the night watchman and expresses longing for the light, and anguish at the condition of the people in the darkness. The tenor solo ends with the words Why have you forsaken us? The choir then enters a cappella (in performance, the choir can be doubled on organ using soft strings if necessary--it's difficult for the choir to get its starting pitches), and a soaring solo soprano provides the answer: the Light has come, but more than that, You were never alone; you are never alone; you will never be alone. One staging idea for this piece is to have the solo tenor up front, and the choir and soprano unseen in the rear, especially if there is a rear balcony that will hold the choir. However it is staged, this piece provides worshipers with a powerful and unforgettable reassurance that they do not face their darkest hours alone. (Please note that the MP3 file has some oddities in the dynamics; the sudden changes are artifices of how the MP3 is rendered from Finale and should not be interpreted literally.).

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, written by the Father of English Hymnody, Isaac Watts, in 1707 and later matched with Lowell Mason’s 1824 tune, HAMBURG, has long stood at the forefront of English hymnody.This arrangement, taken from my Passion Week cantata, Wounded, Bleeding, Still Proceeding, allows the full talent-spectrum of the Body of Christ to contemplate His sacrifice and offer their devotion.The first two stanzas feature an alto/soprano duet, set in a minor key with frequent diminished and augmented chords to reflect the despair and loss of a witness to the crucifixion. The entire third stanza, set for SATB chorus, never really moves off the F minor tonic until the end. That, and the relentless pounding of the bass line, ponders the witnesses anguish and our vicarious experience of it through Scripture. So, sing these stanzas sadly – they are sad! When the choir enters, be sure to observe the swelling crescendos/diminuendos as the sorrow and love mingle together.The fourth stanza offers optional congregational participation and may be used to provide a responsorial to the Word of God or a preparation for the Table. The choir sings this stanza in four part harmony as the congregation joins on the melody. It stays in a major key and closely follows the traditional consonances used in Lowell Mason’s harmonization; thus, the choral parts will feel familiar and the congregational melody will flow naturally. Take the text literally (Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.) and sing it firmly, enthusiastically, passionately, but never triumphantly. We're Forgiven (God of Grace) was originally scored in a Piano/Guitar/Voice format, but for this Advent/Christmas season, Servant Song Music & Ministry has produced this full SATB Choral arrangement, as well! This particular arrangement is suitable for Beginner and Early Intermediate Church Choirs and Worship Teams, including very small ensembles. If you don't have any men in your choir, you can turn the score into a Soprano/Alto 2-part version pretty easily, too. This short, accessible piece of worship music was written as a liturgical response for use during Christian services during the Advent/Christmas/Epiphany seasons of the church calendar. It returns the work of the people TO the people, placing the Words of Assurance into the mouths and hearts of the congregation and/or choir, rather than having the minister alone speaking the words of absolution/assurance after the Prayer of Confession. Set in a simple key for beginning accompanists and including chord charts for guitarists (or pianists who prefer to play by reading the melody notes in the RH and playing by chord symbol with their LH), this song has been set in a perfect vocal range for congregational voices and/or church choirs. Non-liturgical churches have also appreciated this piece as a way for congregants to respond musically to services on themes such as God's Grace, Forgiveness, Reconciliation, Prodigals, Mercy, and also throughout Advent or whenever the pastor is focusing on themes of Hope, Peace, Joy, Love, etc. Please don't make illegal copies of this score; it is the primary way I recover the costs of arranging, engraving and publishing new music.
