Two Views of Scott Joplin is an exploration of a personal and artistic crisis that Scott Joplin, the King of Ragtime, went through between 1904 and 1906. This crisis was precipitated by the untimely death of Freddie Alexander in September 1904, to whom Joplin had been married only ten weeks. Knowledge of this marriage was lost to history for almost a century until the Joplin scholar Edward A. Berlin discovered the newspaper obituary, which is quoted in the bass solo in Part II, The Obituary of Freddie Alexander. Apparently, Scott Joplin, already inspired by the progressive ideals of Booker T. Washington, saw a path to social and artistic betterment through his love of Freddie, a daughter of a refined family. During this period, Joplin used the title rag less often in his piano-solo works, and nurtured an interest in opera (he had long been active in vaudeville as well as ragtime piano). He seems to have lost his sense of direction in 1905 and 1906, until led by his publisher John Stark to move to New York City in 1907. Once there, apparently growing out of his grief, Joplin studied with an Italian opera singer and composer, composed his folk opera Treemonisha, and composed Wall Street Rag and his other late masterpieces for piano. Joplin died in April 1917 following two years of debilitating illness. Joplin left almost no personal writings, such as letters or diaries. To create an impression of autobiography, Two Views of Scott Joplin consists mostly of words and music written by Scott Joplin, and piano music composed by two close associates, the composer-pianists Louis Chauvin and Scott Hayden. These words come from Treemonisha, from Joplin’s little-remembered vaudeville and parlor songs, and also from text in his sheet-music---copyright notices, publishers’ addresses, titles and subtitles of rags, performance directions. In most cases, selected lyrics are extracted from songs and paired with piano-solo themes. These ingredients are combined in creative ways to express the biographical narrative. Instrumental themes are re-cast as necessary to express their newly-attached lyrics. But in no place can any of the music in Two Views of Scott Joplin be considered an arrangement of a given, intact composition, nor a medley of tunes, nor a theatrical revue. The character development and dialogue found in Scott Joplin’s Struggle with Destiny (Part II, No. 3) is my own biographical interpretation of Joplin, based on known evidence and on his music.The score contains extensive Performance Notes for performing this 16-minute work as a choral work or as a short opera scene.

This sentence has been joined by the composer David Aberg to a verse in the Song of Solomon: Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. The piece was originally written as a competition entry: the annual Emerging composers competition, initiated by the Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble based in New York City. It won first prize and had its first performance by the choir at the prize ceremony in St. Paul's Church (New York City) in June 2018.

A dramatic Latin text setting in F minor, composed in the tintinnabuli style made famous by Arvo Pärt. Pärt calls his vocal composition technique tintinnabuli, a Latin word meaning ‘the ringing of bells’. Pärt claims that the three notes of a triad ‘ring like bells’. In tintinnabuli, the tonic triad is always present somewhere within the piece; either the root, third, or fifth of the tonic triad will always be heard. This provides the unique ability to create striking dissonances that remain unified by the underlying tonality, and resolve satisfyingly back into the tonic. This is evident when listening to Epitaphium Innocentum; the way that one or more lines drift away stepwise from the tonal center while others remain on it is jarring in motion, but very pleasing upon resolution. We are the heroes -- we are the axis of the stars.

The Missa Sanctae Mariae Virginis – literally Mass of Saint Mary the Virgin – was composed for the Episcopal church of Saint Mary the Virgin, New York City, where the composer was Music Director & Organist from 2008 to 2013. The Kyrie was composed in 2016. The title makes reference to the name of the church, but also makes reference to the principal source of inspiration: two ancient plainsong melodies that accompany Marian texts (Salve regina and Ave maris stella). The Mass is composed in a vain that is influenced by the great parody Masses of Renaissance masters Palestrina, Lassus, and others. Nods are also made to the twentieth century, and particularly to the music of Herbert Howells and the Anglican tradition, and also to Jean Langlais, Olivier Messiaen, and similar French musical trends. It features a wide range of moods, from scintillating and exotic harmonies to thrilling rhythmic passages. The work is composed for 8-part choir with solo sections for additional voices from within the choir. The Mass can be performed complete as part of a church service. Thanks, John. The song spent six weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in the spring of 1969 and was eventually certified platinum in the US by the RIAA.  Instrumental backing was written by Bill Holman and provided by session musicians commonly known as the Wrecking Crew.  As Holman tells it, the recording can be traced to an incident in which 5th Dimension lead singer Billy Davis Jr. left his wallet in a New York City cab; the man who found the wallet was involved in the production of Hair and invited the group to see the show:  After they'd seen it I received a phone call in which they were all talking over one another, saying 'We've got to cut this song Aquarius.  It's the best thing ever.'.

Brock Commission for the 2003 American Choral Directors Association National Convention, Memorial is based on subject material which reflects the horrific events of September 11, 2001 in New York City. Though presented as one continuous movement, the composition follows a program that comprises four sub-sections: September Morning, The Attack, Prayers, and Petitions. The first two sections reflect the actual chain of events leading up to and including the attacks upon the World Trade Center Towers. The music of destruction, however, is kept to a minimum in favor of musical emphasis upon a possible spiritual response to these events. Healing, cleansing and hope are the main themes of the work, whose primary text of the final section is one verse from Psalm 80, O God, shine your light on us, and we shall be saved. Although composed with the events of 9/11 in mind, nowhere does the text specifically mention 9/11 or the specific events of the day.

Larry was commissioned to to write the Overlake School anthem. Larry’s students have earned scholarships to the Berkeley School of music; attended the Thornton School of music; New York University and many others. Larry is a recording studio musician and besides the 5 albums he has published on CDbaby, he has appeared on many other albums, produced jingles for commercials that received air play in the Seattle market, and was the pianist for a syndicated gospel TV show. Larry has performed from Hawaii to New York city.
