The Missa Sanctae Mariae Virginis – literally Mass of Saint Mary the Virgin – was composed for the Episcopal church of Saint Mary the Virgin, New York City, where the composer was Music Director & Organist from 2008 to 2013. The Kyrie was composed in 2016. The title makes reference to the name of the church, but also makes reference to the principal source of inspiration: two ancient plainsong melodies that accompany Marian texts (Salve regina and Ave maris stella). The Mass is composed in a vain that is influenced by the great parody Masses of Renaissance masters Palestrina, Lassus, and others. Nods are also made to the twentieth century, and particularly to the music of Herbert Howells and the Anglican tradition, and also to Jean Langlais, Olivier Messiaen, and similar French musical trends. It features a wide range of moods, from scintillating and exotic harmonies to thrilling rhythmic passages. The work is composed for 8-part choir with solo sections for additional voices from within the choir. The Mass can be performed complete as part of a church service. Likewise, any of the movements will work as independent compositions which makes them suitable for concert performance. A versatile musician, Alex Guerrero, whose setting of Tenebrae factae sunt was a prize winner in The New York Virtuoso Singers’ composition competition, always strives to write lyrical music that’s not only beautiful, but singable. He’s also an accomplished singer whose vast experience greatly informs his compositional style. As an operatic lyric tenor he performs with the Choruses at The Metropolitan Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago; as a concert soloist his repertoire spans from Bach cantatas, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and frequent premieres of new music; and he has many years of experience performing as a chamber and concert choral artist with some of the premier ensembles in the US that include Yale Choral Artists and the Grammy Award-winning True Concord, as well as the symphonic choruses alongside world-renown orchestras like The Philadelphia Orchestra and The New York Philharmonic. He’s also an active liturgical musician in churches and synagogues with many years of experience serving in congregations of many different denominations: in New York City he’s served in the choirs at Temple Emanu-El, the largest Jewish Reform congregation in the US, the Anglican-style choir of men and boys at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, Marble Collegiate Church, pulpit of the late Norman Vincent Peale, Congregation Shearith Israel - The Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, an Orthodox Sephardi congregation which is the oldest Jewish congregation in North America, and is currently a staff cantor at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, one of the preeminent Roman Catholic cathedrals in the US.

The text is a translation of a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) from The Book of Monastic Life. Rilke’s poem speaks of a desire to encounter the Creator—the You in the title of this composition—and of the necessity for doing so through action, not thought alone. The tempo of the music alternates between those ideas of activity (Allegro energico, Buoyant) and reflection (Poco andante, Molto moderat), giving this three minute piece quite a bit of variety and interest. Anthem which was performed in King Henry the Seventh's Chappel at the Funeral of the most Noble & Victorious Prince John Duke of Marlborough By Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747) transcribed by Guido Menestrina Il padre, Giovanni Maria Bononcini (Buononcini) (1642-1678), era stato violinista e compositore: attivo alla corte di Modena, aveva scritto un trattato, Musico prattico, pubblicato nel 1673. Il fratello minore di Giovanni, Antonio Maria, fu anch'egli musicista. Proprio dal padre Giovanni ricevette la prima educazione musicale; quando questi morì, nel 1678, divenne studente di Giovanni Paolo Colonna a Bologna, dove vennero eseguiti i suoi primi lavori. Proprio grazie al Colonna entrò a far parte dell'Accademia dei Filarmonici in veste di compositore. Nel 1685 aveva già preparato e pubblicato le sue prime opere. Ottenne nel 1688 il posto di musicista presso la basilica di San Petronio, e più tardi divenne maestro di cappella nella chiesa di San Giovanni in Monte. Sempre a Bologna fece la conoscenza del librettista Silvio Stampiglia, assieme al quale, tra il 1692 e il 1696, produrrà cinque opere. A partire dal 1692 si recò a Milano, Roma (dove fu apprezzato e sostenuto da Filippo II Colonna e dalla sua consorte Olimpia Pamphilj) e Venezia; infine, dal 1698 al 1711 si stabilì a Vienna, dove godette i favori degli imperatori Leopoldo I e Giuseppe I. Di passaggio a Berlino nel 1702, incontrò Georg Friedrich Händel, di quindici anni più giovane di lui, di cui riconobbe il talento precoce: lo avrebbe rincontrato alcuni anni più tardi. Dal 1714 al 1719 fu di nuovo a Roma, al servizio di Johann Wenzel, Conte di Gallas, Ambasciatore dell'Imperatore d'Austria a Roma, molto noto per il suo amore per la musica. Al Conte di Gallas, Bononcini dedicò la Favola Pastorale Erminia, rappresentata al Teatro della Pace nella Stagione del Carnevale del 1719. Il dramma musicale ebbe grandissimo successo sia per la musica, sia per gli interpreti, fra cui si segnalarono Domenico Gizzi (1687-1758), Musico Soprano della Real Cappella di Napoli ed il celebre contralto napoletano Francesco Vitale. Sempre nella Stagione del Carnevale 1719 al Teatro della Pace, Bononcini rappresentò il dramma per musica L'Etearco, dal librettista Silvio Stampiglia dedicato alla Contessa Ernestina di Gallas, moglie dell'Ambasciatore austriaco. Anche in questo dramma per musica Domenico Gizzi e Francesco Vitale fecero apprezzare tutte le spezie più ricercate del virtuosismo canoro. Poi, dal 1720 si stabilì a Londra, sotto la protezione del John Churchill, I duca di Marlborough. Qui si esibì anche al violoncello in numerosi concerti, molto apprezzati dall'aristocrazia inglese. Divenne membro della prestigiosa Royal Academy of Music.[senza fonte] Il pubblico londinese era, all'epoca, totalmente ignorante dell'opera italiana, e Händel stava muovendo i primi passi della sua prestigiosa carriera. Fra i due compositori si accese un forte spirito di competizione, sia che collaborassero alla realizzazione della medesima impresa (i tre atti dell'opera Muzio Scevola furono composti il primo da Filippo Amadi, il secondo da Bononcini, il terzo da Händel, al fine di soddisfare tutti e tre gli artisti), sia che, più spesso, si impegnassero in produzioni rivali. Le opere di maggior successo di Bononcini in quegli anni furono Astarto (1720), Crispo (1722), Griselda (1722), che si rivelò un vero e proprio trionfo, Erminia (1723), Calfurnia (1724). A favore dell'italiano era anche una certa ostilità verso Händel dovuta alle sue origini tedesche e alla contemporanea presenza sul trono inglese della poco amata dinastia di Hannover. Ma nel 1727-1728 scoppiò uno scandalo che compromise il successo di Bononcini e lo costrinse a lasciare Londra: il compositore Antonio Lotti accusò il madrigale di Bononcini In una siepe ombrosa di essere un plagio di un brano dei suoi Duetti, terzetti e madrigali. Fuggito a Parigi nel 1733, a causa di speculazion.

Verbum sapientes defendit.   The Lorem ipsum is a text in pseudo-Latin, loosely inspired in a writing of Cicero[1] and that since the XVI century is used in publishing as filler text. Today it is used with a similar function, in electronic documents or web design. There are several versions of this text (of variable length), all them used to begin in the same way (Lorem ipsum … elit) but goon in different fashions. Therefore, I also invented part of the text, taking care of the metric, structural parallelisms and some hidden allusion to popular music (Tellus, ventus et ignis is Earth, Wind and Fire). The last sentence has even some sense: Verbum sapientes defendit means that the word defends to those who know. In the coda, since it is vocally much more practical to finish in m than in t, I changed the last word: dolor sit ipsum, what carries the existentialist message that pain is oneself.  Musically, the form is a rondo, with an obsessive refrain (based on the sentence we are commenting) which reappears without modifications.  This piece was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 18, 19 and 20 May 2015 (as if from a handbook: one day the text, the following day the music and on the third one big adjustements and the definitive precisions). Qui di seguito info sul compositore. n. a Costigliole di Saluzzo (Cuneo-Italia) il 13 maggio 1849; prof. a Lanzo il 23 settemre 1870; m. a Torino il 22 ottobre 1934. Fu accolto da don Bosco nel suo Oratorio di Valdocco (Torino) nel 1864, a 14 anni di età , come allievo falegname. Egli però, già cantore del duomo di Saluzzo, aveva una spiccata inclinazione alla musica, e trovò in don Bosco chi lo comprese e l'assecondò. Sotto la guida del M. De Vecchi poté studiare musica strumentale, armonia e composizione. I suoi progressi furono così rapidi che, fattosi salesiano, divenne il più attivo collaboratore del M. Cagliero, e, allorché questi partì per l'Argentina a capo della prima spedizione di missionari salesiani (1875), a lui fu affidata la direzione della Schola cantorum,e nel 1889 anche della banda musicale dell'Oratorio. Maestro impareggiabile - come attesta un suo ex-allievo, don Alberto Caviglia - trasformò la scuola di canto col suo metodo d'insegnamento, sia nella preparazione della lettura, sia nell'educazione delle voci bianche e nell'addestramento delle masse corali, che giunsero fino a quattrocento voci. Con mezzi così poderosi il M. Dogliani ricondusse in chiesa la musica classica, e la Basilica di Maria Ausiliatrice fu rinomata per le grandiose esecuzioni inappuntabili degli spartiti di Rossini, Cherubini, Haydn, Gounod, Sgambati, Bossi, Tebaldini, Pagella, Perosi, Bottazzo, Ravanello, Mattioli, Donini, giungendo perfino a eseguire la Missa Papae Marcelli del Palestrina, senza accompagnamento (1876), e le classiche composizioni di Vittoria, Lolli, Gabrielli, Orlando di Lasso. La presenza della sua Schola cantorum e della sua banda strumentale fu spesso ambita e richiesta in altre città d'Italia in solenni circostanze, meritando elogi e premi, e perfino a Marsiglia per le feste centenarie di santa Giovanna d'Arco e l'inaugurazione della nuova cattedrale (1894). Il Cagliero - di cui ridusse a stile liturgico le più solenni composizioni - lo invitò in Argentina per portarvi la sua esperienza pratica d'insegnamento, che poi concretò nel celebre Metodo di canto corale, edito varie volte e su cui si formarono generazioni di Pueri cantores. Fu pure compositore di musica sacra e inni d'occasione di ottimo effetto: notevole l'antifona Corona aurea, composta per l'incoronazione dell'effige di Maria Ausiliatrice nel suo santuario (1903). Ma soprattutto egli - seguendo il metodo educativo di don Bosco - seppe fare della scuola di canto e di banda validi strumenti di formazione interiore, educando soprattutto con l'esempio di perfetto religioso, sicché i suoi allievi, per la sua abituale compostezza e inalterabile pazienza, lo tenevano in concetto di santo. Tra essi vi fu pure il celebre tenore Francesco Tamagno; altro suo discepolo affezionatissimo fu Federico Caudana, poi maestro di cappella a Cremona e buon compositore di musica. È da notare che il M. Dogliani, col suo insegnamento e col suo esempio, precorse di un trentennio la riforma della musica sacra fatta da san Pio X col Motu proprio del 1903.
