In the introduction, the flute inserts its own commentary between phrases of the hymn tune. This material is loosely related to the tune and is also used in interludes between all verses. Stanza one is unison congregation and choir. Stanza two is for SATB, flute, trumpet, and organ. There are breaks between phrases similar to the introduction. The third and final stanza is unison with descant. The flute soars above the texture, and the result is gracious and lovely.Brass Parts include: Trumpets I and II in B-flat and C, Horn in F (substitute for Trombone I), Trombones I and II.

While searching for liturgical texts associated with Pentecost, I was immediately drawn to the sequence of Veni Sancte Spiritus as an invocation of all the divine qualities that are recognized across the world’s major religions. I was particularly moved by a recording of the Gregorian chant on this text, in which groups of three phrases alternate between low and high voices. I began my own setting of the sequence by adapting many of the Gregorian chant phrases, from memory and with varying degrees of similarity to the original melody, passing them through different modal colors. I followed a similar pattern of formal alternation between high and low voices, while expanding each phrase of the chant into a two-part texture. Elements of both Late Medieval and Renaissance counterpoint are adopted in combination with more Eastern-influenced heterophony, in which two voices follow the same melodic outline with individual variations and ornamentation. As the piece progresses, overlapping duos expand into three-part and finally four-part texture. I aim to evoke a sense of connection with ancient ritual and musical forms, alongside a more modern harmonic gravity that favors certain dissonances in relationship to unisons, fifths and other “perfect†intervals.

Psalm 100 is a popular text to put to music, especially since it was probably sung at one time. David expresses his praise. thankfulness, and what he believed God's relationship was to His people in this powerful anthem. I tried to convey what I thought David wanted when he wrote this praise song. It moves at a very quick pace and is exciting to perform. Incorporating a full choir, brass quintet, and piano Psalm 100 can be a challenge to keep pace with the tempo. The secret is for the choir not to over-sing, emphasize the strong beats (as noted), and sing with a small mouth. Let it flow smoothly in phrases. Psalm 100 will be a great praise and worship anthem and fits will for special occassions. The brass parts and score are sold as a seperate packet. Enjoy this lively piece!

Linzey (Ret.), believed that military hymns should not be waltzes. So he converted the timing of Mozart’s piece to four-four timing, giving the Air Force Hymn traditional timing that is fit for a hymn. The S & A parts form one of these melodies, the T is another and the B the third.Something that my choirs have found useful to note is that in the first half, the phrases have an upward motion and in the second half a downward motion (with the exception of the tenor part).As an alternative to the words, for a performance, this could be sung through vowel sounds (ooh, ahh or hmm) with each melody offered the opportunity to ‘feature’ by singing the words over the others singing a vowel sound. For example, the S, A & B part ‘ooh' whilst the T sing their tune with the words.

Lifestyles changed: less social contact, followed by rapid change in workplaces, health care and other institutions. Everyone was affected in some way. Playing music – and choir singing in particular – was considered by many countries to pose an increased risk of spreading infection and was discouraged. During these strange times, I found a poem by Kitty O’Meara on social media. The text originates from her own blog post in March 2020 with the title In the Time of Pandemic. The poem poses an image for a distinctive perspective during the coronavirus outbreak, the hope that something good can come from a collective state of together, apart. The idea of individual freedom of action when things are beyond our control, and at the same time a notion that the time after this will not only exist but can be better than before. The lyrics inspired the music to be both meditative with repetitive phrases and motifs and also uplifting and full of confidence and joy. And the People Stayed Home was commissioned to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the St Jacob’s Vocal Ensemble and was first performed at St Jacob’s Church in Stockholm on November 19, 2022. – Martin Åsander.
