It was my first freelance arrangement and, interestingly, turned out to be the best-selling anthem that I've ever written. It's had a good run with Beckenhorst, but now the rights have been returned to me. Published by Nigel Williams (A0.763272). Abide With Me (Eventide) is a universally admired hymn. This concertato (festive hymn) arrangement is set for congregation, SATB choir, trumpet in Bb, and organ. The trumpet and congregation feature in the first and last verses with choir and organ, the choir sing the middle three verses. The harmonic language is dignified throughout and the choral writing in the middle verses is a perfect accompaniment to the text. Suited to all patriotic occasions such as Veteran's and Armistice Day. The full score runs to nine pages and the separate one page trumpet score is attached. The performance duration is five minutes and the score is of an intermediate difficulty level. (See also my 'Amazing Grace' and 'Blessed Assurance' concertato arrangements).

Published by Michelle Kraak (A0.1012606). The Betrayal is written for choir (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). It is a religious piece based on the passion of Christ. It has aspects of imitation, with a lot of independence in the parts. The vocal parts represent the voice of Jesus, the voices of those who crucified him, a narrator, and also briefly the voice of Peter, Jesus' disciple. The bass primarily sings the role of the people who called for his death, but as the piece continues others join in this role. I wrote some of the lyrics and also pulled some verses in from the Bible. I think this would be a great piece for Holy Week, perhaps on Good Friday or Maundy Thursday. the piece captures some of the intense emotions involved in the crucifixion and would make a great addition to Lenten music in the church. Lyrics:Why did you leave me?Why did you run?I absolved you of your sin. Jesus Christ must die for what he's done. I absolved you of your sin,I saved you from yourselves,I just wanted to lead you,Closer to God. Death! I wanted to give you new life. Three times you will deny me, Woman I do not know him! I actually liked this group, even though they were not commercially successful. This song was released as a single. However it fell short, mainly because the B-Side was accepted better, Hello, It's Me. This song is a rocker and a typical 60s rock song. Rock was beginning to take hold, however, a lot of bands added a smooth section in their songs to get more appeal. This song is no exception to that rule. The song is unusual in that the section that leads to the final chorus has several time signature changes, which was not the norm for the time. At times the voices will be at their high limit, to keep the feel of the original recording. This song still rocks with the best of them. Duration = 2:51. My personal preference is for this version; it paints a seashore picture that I can imagine, and I'm completely convinced by the romantic element!Musically speaking, I love the alternating 3 and 4 beat bars; they make me think of waves coming irregularly to the shore.Pronunciation notes: slight roll on all 'r' sounds; rye - 'ye' as in bye-bye; 'ch' as in loch, back of throat; 'll' is said H L - run them together 'hl'. Everything else is written phonetically.Translation: 1. Beside the sea grow red roses, and white lilies, and there lives my true love, sleeping all night and rising in the morning. 2. Down where the sea laps at the flat rock, we walked together, and spoke words of love; lilies grow there, and branches of rosemary.3. By the sea are blue pebbles, golden flowers, everything that's beautiful - and also my dearest sweetheart.
