That's Amore first appeared in the 1953 movie The Caddy. Lyricist Jack Brooks describes "amoré" (love) in the southern Italian town of Napol, a towni filled with passion - and compares "amoré" to his favorite foods: pizza and pasta fazool. It's a quirky romantic song poking a bit of fun at Italian stereotypes. This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. It works perfectly at outdoor events, entertainment at dinners, and as a sing-along. Performance time: 2:30+.

Its strophic composition made it immediately ‘catchy’ and its original lyrics by Carlo Milanuzzi, conveys a very familiar topic: the ‘sweet torment of a broken heart’. This song carries the subtitle: Recitar cantando, that new style of singing that imitates the inflections of the spoken text. Text (and elocution) is/are important. Stewart (A0.1505628). “Farewell to Tarwathie” is probably best known from Judy Collins’ recording of 1970 that was accompanied by the songs of Humpback whales; but it started first with a poem written by the Scottish poet-peasant George Scroggie, published in 1857. His poem was accompanied by the traditional 18th century Scottish air “Kennet’s Dream”. Thus, the marriage of Scroggie’s words to a well-known Scottish fiddle tune gives us the “Farewell to Tarwathie” as we know it today. It is a song about a young sailor saying good-bye to family and friends as he heads out to sea to find riches in hunting the whale. This arrangement is scored for a traditional choral mixed ensemble with divisi [SMATTBB] (at times) and a bass-baritone solo, to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 5:30+-.

It originally appears as a duet in the G&S opera, and gained popularity outside that world with Peter, Paul and Mary’s rendition, as recorded on their 1969 album “Peter, Paul and Mommy.†– introducing the world of G&S to a completely new audience. Lyrics were added later by Billy Rose and Edward Eliscu. It was published in 1929, and subsequently included in Youmans musical play Great Day. To today’s ear the lyrics speak about the power of music to brighten one’s day. The original lyrics however contain text that is considered derogatory and worthy of a study of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s to better understand popular American music and racial stereotypes of the early 20th century. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 3:20. An apt signature tune for choirs.

Generations grew up hearing this tune played on (perhaps) a WurliTzer 153 Band Wagon that accompanied their carousel ride in many a fairground on a sunny afternoon. In 1950 the music was adapted by Irving Aaronson and Paul Francis Webster and featured in the MGM biographical film “The Great Carusoâ€. It was later recorded by Mario Lanza, thus making it an ‘Italian-American favorite’. This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.
