The music and text of ‘The Sense of a Place Will Remain’ was inspired by pictures of an early carved stone cross and a tenth-century Viking burial stone on the island of Inchcolm in Scotland. First performed by Inchcolm New Music Ensemble 29 June 2007, conductor Steve King. Instrumentation is flexible; the following is a guide: Part 1 - Violin 1, flute 1 (doubling piccolo if possible) oboe 1, Part 2 - Violin 2, flute 2, oboe 2 (doubling tenor recorder if possible), clarinet 1, trumpet Part 3 - Viola, clarinet 2, horn in F, Eb horn (2 players doubling harmonicas in C) Part 4 - Cello, bassoon Part 5 - Double bass, bass guitar (or Cello 2 - playing as if usual bass clef, but an octave lower where possible) SATB voices (doubling metal spoons and pitch pipes) Optional:Percussion (one player) - claves, glockenspiel (could be a child’s toy instrument such as an ‘Angel’ glockenspiel), mark tree, spring drum (thunder shaker), frame drum, musical jewelry box (or similar clockwork device).Should a glockenspiel not be available, a special part has been created which arranges the glockenspiel for two flutes, together with the other percussion music. This special part is not visible in the score. Keyboard instrument with sustaining capability - piano sound Instructions: Wind players can breathe ad lib. during any very long notes. From letter D onwards non-wind players who are not soloists blow across the top of small bottles. The pitches produced are not specified, but they should not be shrill. A soft breathy tone is preferred. About half of the voices play pairs of metal spoons (share printed part between two singers and anyone not holding the music holds metal spoons). Hold the spoons one in each hand, and strike the larger ends together. Spoons are struck together where shown with a large patterned note head. Strike rapidly where a tremolo sign is given. Four singers play pitch tuning pipes: 1 Soprano and 1 Alto play viola/cello pitch tuning pipes, 1 Tenor and 1 Bass play violin pitch tuning pipes Pitch pipe playing is indicated with square note heads - player should breathe ad lib. during very long notes. Where there are very long sung notes, the singers may stagger breathing ad lib. Spoken sounds are indicated with x note heads and with the text in italics. There are many pauses. These can be of varying duration, but on the whole they should not hold up the momentum of the piece, but be of sufficient duration to establish the solo and pitch pipe notes. First performance March, 2023 by Schola Cantorum of Silicon Valley.One morning in early 2022, after having somewhat unexpectedly lost my two aunts and one of my best friends in the world over the previous year or so, I woke up and this piece, along with some tears, poured out in about 15 minutes. For Us the Living contains echoes of Brahms' German Requiem (Denn alles Fleisch ist wie Gras), Shawn Kirchner's Cornerstone, and Dolly Parton's Light of a Clear Blue Morning (another a song about loss). The words are partly based on a short poem I wrote after my father passed away. I ended to him, Go to sleep, rest a while. So, perhaps obviously, the piece is like a lullaby. What I'm saying is that the purpose of mourning is first to comfort the survivors, and a call to take care of each other -- but also to not just wait for salvation, but to use the memory of our loved ones, to be inspired to pick ourselves up and make ourselves useful while we're on this Earth.Â

It is a setting of two verses from Psalm 85, and it was written and performed for the 350th anniversary of the founding of Lion Walk United Reformed Church, Colchester, and is dedicated to the memory of the composer's teacher Herbert Howells, ending with a characteristic Howells cadence. The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well. If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices. The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah). The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.

The first verse's gentle, flowing feel is the comfort of knowing we've been walking a path together. The second verse, a bit stronger, with the full choir entering, builds this comfort and joy of common experience. The third verse, with its darker text, should also have a more misterioso feel, but don't let it drag. Our parting is approaching. The fourth verse should have a lighter, more sparkling feel, with streams and snowflakes and growing understanding that though what may seem final is not, merely a new way of being. The resoluteness of the fifth verse reflects the strength of knowing that the path we have shared together regardless of our proximity, and gives us strength and joy in knowing that our lives are bettered by our shared experiences. The coda, beginning in measure 95, brings us back to a more settled feel, as we are comforted by the memory of those shared experiences. By the final bars, we arrive at a restful state, comfortable knowing that though time has passed and circumstances have changed, we have been blessed by what we've experienced together.

In the Midst of Wild Being (2007) for SATB chorus, horn, and harp was commissioned by the King’s Chapel Concert Series, Heinrich Christensen, director, with the support of Choral Arts New England. The work was written in memory of American composer Daniel Pinkham (1923–2006), longtime director of music at King’s Chapel. The texts, written by American poet Elizabeth Kirschner, are directly inspired by the landscape of New England-though the sentiments reflected by the poems can apply to many places. Throughout, the focus is on the chorus, whose music is colored by the horn and harp. The Garden begins with an extended, unfolding introduction for horn and harp; the pace is that of a slow, steady walk. Though the pace remains, the music raises itself to rich climaxes in celebration of the verdant landscape. The Sea is a light and airy dance featuring a bouncy melodic theme that returns a number of times. The Forest is rich and expressive, reflecting true oneness with the landscape.

I was so moved by the ones I saw that I immediately asked to see more of them. I narrowed down my choices to eight sea-themed poems that became the basis for Seascapes.
